Topic: Gibson Custom

I guess this topic goes here...

First, thank you Joe for making your JBLP affordable and a players guitar. I have the utmost respect for you. Always did, always will.

Today I just saw the price released on the Billy Gibbons "Pearly" Custom Shop model and about puked. $18300 for the signature VOS aged, $10800 for the VOS aged and $7900 for the VOS unaged. Sickening ain't it! How does Gibson expect to get that kind of money with the economy as it is? Well, my respect for Gibson is now gone as it is for Billy G for letting Gibson sell his "signature" for 18K++
sad sad sad
Nuff said. I'm outta here. Cyaaaa....

Re: Gibson Custom

I'm one of the biggest Gibson snobs/users and the stuff they make like that is for collectors.  It totally is unfair.  I don't own a JBLP, but thanks Joe for being fair.  Thats my oly gripe with Gibson, their rediculous prices on some things.  Other than that, they are the only guitars that I let my hands touch.... They got me by the shorts lol.

Re: Gibson Custom

Yeah, I feel the same way.  That price is just nuts.  I'm a huge Gibson fan but I'm not ever going to buy another brand new one.  I'll pay for quality anytime but I'm not going to get ripped off for it either just to pad some companies bottom line.

Very glad the JB Goldtop is not priced in that range.  Other than a collector for closet piece, who would really buy this to actually PLAY?

I'd rather pay someone to build me a 59' replica than even consider that price.

Don't play leapfrog with a unicorn

Re: Gibson Custom

BTW those are GC's prices kind of rounded off. MSRP is a lot higher. Fullers Guitars is asking $24K for the signature VOS aged. My new Gibson days are over. I'll stick to what I have. hmm

Re: Gibson Custom

I just got an up close and personal look at the BG R9 sig and while it's shamelessly overpriced....is about the damn prettiest Lester I've ever seen.  As long as Gibson makes super light, gorgeously flamed, mojo drenched Les Pauls there will be people willing to shell out big money for them.  I do find it odd that there is about a $5K difference between Joe's model and Billy's...oh well.  I think the major reason Gibson makes those guitars so expensive is A) for the cork sniffing collectors, doctors, lawyers, and otherwise uber rich.  B) To raise interest in their products.  C) And finally the biggest reason, so in this horrible economy people can actually look at a regular $5000 flametop R9 and say to themselves, "wow that's a bargain compared to the BG signature guitar!".  While I don't think people are quite that dense, I found myself looking at a beautiful $5k R9 next to the BG in a whole different light.

'67 and '74 Fender Twin Reverbs, '74 Marshall 1987 lead mkII, Metro Superlead 100. Pedals from TC Electronic, Ibanez, Dunlop, BK Butler, Electro-Harmonix, Fulltone, Maestro/Gibson, Loopmaster switching, VoodooLab, Boss. Gibson and Fender guitars, Dimarzio pickups.

Re: Gibson Custom

Trust me you can do a lot better the 5k for a 59 Ri.  I just did.  No one is buying them up... except for me big_smile at steal prices lol.

O yea. I bet if you wait, Murphy's are ganna be given away soon enough.  Gatta get me one of those bad boys.

Re: Gibson Custom

My local GC called me something like 7 or 8 times yesterday desperately trying to get me to buy one. I finally told them to stop calling! The BG-LP is nothing more than a glorified R9 LP. It's NOT even Murphy aged. It's aged at the custom shop and it has Seymour Duncan "Pearly Gates" pickups. Whoopie!! So what qualifies this guitar for such a high price? Not a freakin' thang!!!

Re: Gibson Custom

The PG guitar is a POS because it's just an overpriced R9

Credit to Gibson for being brilliant and actually selling these and make tons of money
Love and Respect!

Re: Gibson Custom

Wow, I wish I could consider a $7K guitar affordable.

Re: Gibson Custom

Due to gibsons prices I've actually went away from focusing on LPs. (looking at the ES-339 now)
They are charging rediculous prices for the standards now, especially when they're so far from what a les paul should be!

Also, they done a stupid thing with the 61 reissue SG, putting a nashville on it! Why?! when the nashville didn't exist in 61!
Gibson need to get their act together, I know it's tough times with money just now for companies, but there's saving money and there's pissing off your customers.

Re: Gibson Custom

I don't know man. If people are willing to buy a signed LP for those prices so be it. I'm the only person I know that thinks the chambered bodies suck. There's just a tone differents I can hear and don't like plus I like the weight of a not chambered even on long shows but everyone else loves the lighter bodies. It's all about what some like and are willing to pay for I guess.

Re: Gibson Custom

"Courses for Horses" Springs to mind, I think the price of that guitar is outrageous but if people are willing to pay that then hats off to Gibson. Personally I'd prefer a solid dependable guitar of my own that isnt based off someone elses :x

I think a prudent move on all guitar making companies would be to have a fair price range / quality in the reach of the ordinary persons budget £800-900 on a guitar seems reasonable to me, but at that price I'd expect something damn good. Honestly I see no one churning guitars out at that price which are worth it (other than custom makers / small companies). It all boils down to paying for a name..

That being said my main guitar I bought brand new a Fender Highway One back in 2005 (50's style neck etc) and I got it for a bargain price at the time £500 I really feel like nothing else I've played comes close to it for price performance fender hit the nail on the head with that run of guitars.

Re: Gibson Custom

That's sure a lot of money for any guitar. I guess it's like everything really - supply and demand.

If you look at my avatar you'll see why I haven't had my hands on many Les Pauls so can't really comment on how different ones feel to play but I sure know mine is beautiful.
If I couldn't make a noise with one (couldn't really call it playing !!) I would have one as a thing of beauty just to look at !! It's "only" a Standard and was £1,599. A little less than the BG one !!

The strat just doesn't have that same beauty for me. Mine is white with a maple neck but I must say that my sons sunburst 50's alike one is a beut as well.

Whoops. Rambling.

Sorry. roll

Re: Gibson Custom

I recently got a new LP Traditional Pro from GC; street price on them is $1999. Great axe for the money I think - BB3 & 57 pickups with coil switching, 60's neck (which I love) and locking Grovers. OK, so It has a rather plain grained piece of maple.
Not from the custom shop however. If you want highly figured wood then you have to pay another $300 or more for the regular Traditional or the plus top model. It plays and sounds great. What more do you want (aside from the pearloid tuners and a gorgeous piece of maple and the custom logo on the case)?

Major Tom to ground control...

+1 for non-chambered.  Chambered bodies sound thiner.  Very un-les paul.
