Re: Rolling Stone

I think the fact that Eddie Van Halen is not in the top 20 is blasphemy as well.

I don't think Rolling Stone can be objective when they make a list like this. I think it should be called the trendiest 100 guitar players and the list would make more sense. Jack White is trendy, not a great guitar player... he writes GREAT songs on a guitar - but he's not necessarily being offered to write guitar player articles etc.

Re: Rolling Stone

Yes it's certainly the trendiest, not the best.

None of these would be in the top 20:

Kirt Hammett, Kurt Cobain, Johnny Ramone, Jack White. Sorry I've not heard of James Burton. I have though heard of Joe and the others.  Others that appear to be missing would be Ritchie Blackmore, Buddy Guy, Robben Ford, Derek Trucks (please correct me if I'm wrong).

Robert Johnson while his songs were iconic, was actually not the best early blues guitar player either.

James Burton, i hadn't heard of hin either, but apparently, he was a sixties sessionman, and famed for playing his deep red, 53 Fender Telecaster.

Re: Rolling Stone

Joe had given influential credit to James Burton in the past.

Well, I know one person who does, but that's not the point. I'm with you Eva.

James Burton was for many years Elvis' lead guitarist.

Re: Rolling Stone

Was this a reader's poll or did they toss the dice in their headquarters for this? (If so, is this the new way of stirring sh-- up... ahem, get people talking and sending them mail?) Just wondering. Such lists will always be at least a little bit subjective, really who's to judge the order of the top guitarist ever? And I get you saying it's more of a trend list but even that doesn't feel completely right, at least to me.

Also, where on that list is Rory Gallagher, as an example. Just curious.

Why am I even giving this so much thought, that's most likely the intention of publishing the whole thing. wink

Yeah, lots of great guitarists missing from the list, very strange!

Re: Rolling Stone

Ummm, I hate to rain on everybody's parade, but this list was published back 2003. Joe just wasn't that well known back then. Now, if they came out today and didn't put him on there, that would be a crying shame.

Joe has a list... he featured a song by each during his Sirius "cup of joe" DJ slots. I remember writing them down... complete with 3 pages of notes.  Here is his list:

Joe Bonamassa's top 25 blues guitar players... with quotes by Joe afterwards.

25.Warren Haynes
24. Robben Ford - "bridged the gap between blues and jazz"
23. Alexis Korner "was really the first guy to play chicago jump style blues.. influenced John Mayall and Clapton."
22. Danny Gatton "he taught me that you need to learn jazz, bluegrass, and rockabilly and rock n' roll to really be a musician."
21. Rory Gallagher "its all in your hands...it's not about the gear - the guitars and boutique amps...raw emotion."
20. TBone Walker - "Stormy Monday" played guitar behind his back
19. Billy Gibbons - "Great Rock player, stellar blues guitar player, again it's not about how many notes he plays, but the emotion in each note."
18. John Lee Hooker "Boogie Chillin really paved the way for us blues rockers to crank up the amps."
17.Mike Bloomfield "I judge a guitar player by how many other people copy THEM." referring to the highly reverberated sound.
16. Elmore James "Dust my Broom" (sounds a lot like it influenced Wild About You Baby - Nic says this)
15. Johnny Winter - "Another guitar player who turned his amp up all the way."
14. Albert Collins - "master of the Telecaster."
13. Paul Kossof "of Free - Les paul and marshall thing. Greatest vibrato out of any other guitar player"
12. Buddy Guy - "he just gets better and better, singing better too"
11. Peter Green "was in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers before he was in the pop band Fleetwood Mac."
10. Otish Rush "I cant quit you baby" Led Zeppelin covered this song.
9. Freddie King "gave a 110% every time just completely drenched in sweat – that’s a showman.”
8. Muddy Waters “the King of Chicago Blues"
7. Stevie Ray Vaughan “He’s probably the most copied guitar player…"
6. Albert King "influenced SRV, had about six riffs in his bag of trick but they were al devastatingly good."
5. Jeff Beck – "When I head the Jeff Beck Truth album it changed my life."
4. Jimi Hendrix - "Invented the entire Blues Rock Genre."
3. Robert Johnson “This is the guy that started it all."
2.  Eric Clapton “Eric Clapton, for me, is the reason why I play guitar. "
1. BB King “Without BB King, I would not be (here) ..."

Re: Rolling Stone

hey eva.  i read rolling stone.  i probably wouldn't but i got a deal on it, a year's subscription for a dollar.  as for the lists they put out, and by the way i think this one is a few years old unless they did it again, you have to take it for what it is.  which is to say, crap.  It is mainly a modern popular music magazine.  However, there is normally one good article a magazine (For example i have read good, long pieces on derek trucks, kris kristofferson, and steve earle since getting the magazine) on music, then maybe another news feature that is sometimes neat, and occasionally a few good small quarter page size parts.

Re: Rolling Stone

This is a magazine that puts Britney Spears and the Jonas Brothers on the cover. It was a once great mag that is now a joke.

There are allot of great guitar players on that list, I, along with many others just don't agree with how they are numbered or that our guy (Joe ) is left off. We know he is great
