Seems like a shame to get rid of a perfectly good Les Paul.
Yes, he does seem to use it there. Is the gray strat also an ec?
From a previous Joe interview ....
"The gray one has a custom profile neck that is a softer V and a little wider, the black one is stock"
I would kill for a jubilee head... But thing is, If I didn't spend a single cent ever, it would take like two years to save up for a ceriatone clone. And that's just a head ~~
substitue - Do you guys know of any similar sounding amps?
It makes me suicidal to know that I won't realistically be able to afford a jubilee head until I am like 30+ (If I decide for medical school)...
Maybe if I saved cash for a year or so and sold my LP (since I got my gibson at a HUGE discount I would make a profit from selling it) I could afford a clone head...
How much money are you willing to spend? The Jubilee tone is not worth selling your Les Paul over IMO because there are other amplifiers out there that can get you in the ballpark. For around a grand a used 100 watt Marshall (JCM800, JCM900, JCM2000, Vintage Modern, 40th Anniversary models etc) can be had. There is a guy on this forum (Ben) who uses a Mesa Lonestar fitted with EL34s and he claims it sounds very close to a Jubilee. Of course for a little over a grand you COULD get the Ceriatone Jubilee clone. Also, trying to cop someone else's tone can be a very frustrating experience. I just ballpark it and then see if I can also convincingly achieve my other influences on the same tone. You will soon find that guys like Joe Bonamassa, Gary Moore, Jimmy Page, Billy Gibbons, Eric Clapton all played Les Pauls into overdriven amps. The other side of it are the SRV, Hendrix, Mayer, Bramhall II, KWS, Beck etc...Strats into clean AND overdriven amps. It's really in the technique and fingers not so much the amps and settings. Sorry for the ranting, just keep your head up and good luck with medical school!
A ceriatone would be cheaper than a lonestar for me. It's not so important for me to replicate the tone precisely, it's more a reference of where I would like to be. I'm sure I could settle for less if I found something that came along. Most important is that I can get a somewhat fat saturated with a fair amount of drive yet still having the single coil sound.
I'll make sure to check out some of the stuff you've mentioned and other stuff. If I get a summer job I can rack in at least 1/3 of the cost, save for a while and maybe have mis familia pitch in a bit. It's all possible...
But maybe the solution is in something simpler. It's possible there is a pedal coupled with a 4x12 that could satisfy my ears. I like my town now, I would just like to add some more drive with a Slightly more distorted sound, just slightly, and fatten up the sound without changing the actual tone. I plan to go to my store again today and try out every single drive/dist/boost pedal they have.
P.S. Med school is 3-4 years away so no worry. I've not decided yet though
It doesn't really matter what brand of head you get. You need 2 amps, one with a good midrange, and one with a good top and bottom that saturates nicely. The Mesa does the latter and has EL-34's. I find that 6L6 based amps have a warmer, cleaner midrange and are good for that mid range pairing. I use a Top Hat Emplexador for my Marshall clone and that has EL-34's, and you can hear its a little flatter sounding. I find that the EL-34 amps are a little more direct and focused, and the 6L6 amps are a little more airy/spread out sounding. Its close, but not exact. I plan on doing another video b/c I have had requests for showing the amp seperately, then together. I meant to do this 2 months ago when I made the original video, but I fell off a little lol.
Ben
To faithfully recreate Joe's tone Ben is right, 2 amps are pretty much required. Since you have the Spider Valve already, I would probably run that with a fair amount of gain, some reverb, maybe a light chorus, and a medium delay. Then, use an amp that perhaps has more bottom (since you said that you are lacking "fatness") to ABY with the Spider Valve. Marshall's are notorious for low end and fatness so I'd definately go down that route first. Besides on ANDY I'm pretty sure it was mostly Marshall at that point. BTW what kind of Les Paul are you thinking about selling?
Yeah I never considered running two amps.
My local shop has the Marshall JVM210H, and a Marshall 1987 amp head. Those are all the marshalls they have
There are a couple other amps though, a bogner and such which I will make sure to try.
How would I go about connecting 2 amps together and into a 4x12?
Some really great advice given in this thread.
Here is my 2 cents.
I think working on duplicating Joe's playing techniques verse obtain Joe's equipment is a better route then spending money you don't have.
Stick with your Strat and add an amp and pedals that inspire you.
Few reasons I say this. Joe can sound very much like Eric Johnson at times but is equipment is very different. But he also sounds like Joe which is getting more distinct on every album. I can name that guitarist in two notes.
I have been fortunate recently to be able to purchase some really nice equipment. And you know what I sound just like me. $300 or $3000 guitar I still #$%^.
I think once you develop your technique and voice it will always be there.
And you can use your influences such as Joe. Joe himself has done this with his influences proficiently and created his own unique style.
P.S. Check Fender or Youtube for videos of Eric Johnson using a G-Dec amp. A modeling amp and it sounds similar to his rig but the biggest thing is that it sounds like Eric Johnson. His G-Dec settings have been posted. I have used them and sound nothing like the videos.
In the end have fun! I hope this helps.

SOUNDS LIKE GOOD ADVICE
remember Joe did not start with a marshall jubilee!!!

TIRED OF THIS KIND OF ADVICE. I can see how this is considered good advice, but it's not (no offense at all) because I'm trying to change my RIG.
Here is the deal. That's not the "tone" I'm trying to reproduce. No matter your skill level, a thin sounding setup is a thin sounding setup. You can be a horrible guitar player through an amazing rig, and your rig will sound amazing even though the playing is horrible. I lack a good sounding rig. I'm not trying to sound like Joe, I want the tone that his RIG produces, not that he himself produces. It's like, would you expect Joe to settle for a 5w mini hand-held battery amp, even if he sounds like himself through it? No.
No matter how well I play, my rig sounds thin. Bottom line. I can't make it sound fat because it sounds thin ~~
Obviously Joe did not start with a jubilee, but I am far from a beginner guitar player
I think that playing through other peoples rigs and them saying you don't sound like so and so you sound like you is true and thats because we all phrase differently. The fact that we play a note differetly. Sure there will be a little change in it like where you pick, but the tone is still there. The variables aren't far enough a part to sound totally different. Yea you might tweak it to sound more like you but if I pluged into you rig it would sound more like your tone, only me playing. Thats what I feel whether its true or not lol.
Ben

Yeah 'tis what I'm saying.
I never said I want to sound like Joe, I want to have the tone of Joes rig. A humbucker sustains longer than a single coil. It's not because of technique of the player. Joes rig sounds fatter than mine. Completely unrelated to technique, it's the gear.
People like to merge the meaning of the word tone and style/playing. There is no such thing as "tone" in fingers. It's the wrong word to use. When I say tone I mean the default sound that a rig creates based on what the rig consists of. If I say playing style then I'm talking about how each individual makes the rig sound. Basically, upgrading my rig will get me a fatter sound that only upgrading my rig can. You can't make a clean amp sound distorted the way a distortion pedal does with playing style. You can't make a 10w ss amp sound as loud as a 100w tube amp with "technique and/or playing style"
Derek and the Domino's Layla and Other Assorted love songs was all done with 2 amps.
Clapton used a Stock 1956 stratocaster and his main amp was a 5 watt Fender Champ the other amp was a pig nose battery operated amp. Tom Dowd said you could hear a freakin pin drop down on the floor with the volume he was pushing out, but he was more interested in tone and phrasing with that album. I play thourgh CRAP and I just recently upgraded to a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. I can honestly say if you don't have the total package amp, skills, and so forth then your right it wont sound good. But even the most thin guitar sound in the world can be made beautiful if you work with it. Have you tried an external speaker extention cab for your amp? Single speaker amps can sound thin in a mix some times. Also a closed back with be fatter then a open back cab. you can't do that with your amp because if you close it's back you'll over heat the amp. Just some more random advice, take it or pass it on.
I'm already planning to obtain a 4x12 for the summer. That is definatley a big plus, I think that if I could find a very certain pedal coupled with a 4x12 that could satisfy my needs.
I read somewhere that some old marshall guvnor pedals have the same circuiting as the silver jubilees... (what do you know about it?) BTW, does anyone know which speakers were in his Marshall Cabinets during ANDY live? My experience with speakers are very limited. My amp right now has a V30 which sounds awesome at low volumes but as soon as I turn it up it's bright, thin etc. But that is probably also because it's a 1x12 open back amp. (Maybe I'll just have to ask Joe in a month after his concert >.>)

While Dragonsoni makes some very good points, I will say that going after Joe's sound is unique in that I have very similar influences to Joe's and by using his approach to sound has allowed me the flexablity to explore most of them. I had been a big fan of Clapton, Hendrix, SRV, EJ, Beck, Page, etc long before I ever knew who Joe was. I found it amazing how one could pull off all of them with a flick of a switch or turn of a knob on his guitar effortlessly. Many artists are known for running multiple amp rigs and Joe definately didn't invent the concept. As far as running 2 heads into a 4x12 it has to be a STEREO 4x12 in that each head is only using 2 speakers. It essentially breaks the cab up evenly, 2 speakers on the left for one head and the other 2 on the right for the other. BE CAREFUL WITH WATTAGE, you can blow up your fancy cabs by running 2 100 watters into a Marshall 4x12 with 25watt Greenbacks!!! Make sure your cab meets or exceeds the combined wattage of your amps. Oh and I run both of my amps at 8ohms. BTW I tried a Bogner Alchemist and was pleasantly surprised with it the other day. If that is the Bogner you are refering to than I would definately consider it. Can't vouch for reliability though (made overseas). Good luck man keep the questions coming!

I was told that once and checked out the schematic for the guvnor. ( not the new ones
the ones made in late 80,s) and lo and behold its a pedal made with the same clipping diodes
as the jubilee pre-amp circuit . I checked out a demo on youtube of the pedal and it sounded
ok http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9sPkN6uRa0
I would expect this pedal to sound best with a Marshall with el34s primarily jcm800 2203 ,2204
but due to the position of the pedal ie, in front of the amp as opposed to inside the amp
like the jubilee I cannot confirm it will give the sound you are after. the jubilee was voiced differently
to accomodate the clipping diodes which are bright sounding. these pedals were made post 88
as marshall amps at that time all featured diodes in their pre-amps (jcm 2210,2205) which are different
beasts to the previous 2203,2204, so this pedal was to emulate the marshall sound at this time,
whether they succeeded is open to opinion as I have not tried one of these pedals

Yes there is a bogner alchemist, one of two bogners. I have played it with my fulltone but I found to get an almost identical sound to that which I have now... (weird??)
Well bogner co-designed the amp I have now so maybe there are some similarities. I think my cure now is a 4x12 + another drive/dist/gain pedal. I am considering v30s for my 4x12. Thats what I have now, and like my tone, cept I lack the fatness which this thread is about. But my amp is also a 1x12 OPEN back.
