Re: Which pickups did joe have in new day yesterday live?

Alright, I have ordered a mid boost kit from ebay uk, probably arrive next week or so.

I read an extensive guide on how to install it, apparently the EC strat has cavities routed out for the chip so it takes some DIY creativity but it's all in there. Just one question, for shielding, will aluminum tape work? I have a fresh roll of aluminum tape for some reason.

Re: Which pickups did joe have in new day yesterday live?

Yes that should work.  I've heard people using aluminum foil thats been glued in the body in the old days.  I think copper works better but that will do fine.  2 things you need to think about here is you've got a battery that you'll have to place in there as well.  Do you use your Tremlo?  If you don't you could block the bridge and remove the springs from the the back that hold the bridge tention.  That will give you plenty of room for the circuit and a 9 volt battery.  You might even be able to cramb all of that circuit under the pots and selector switch, but the battery for sure won't fit well.

Re: Which pickups did joe have in new day yesterday live?

In the extensive guide, the person did indeed fit both the chip and the battery under the pots, though the battery was glued to the pickguard next to the selector switch. I do not use my tremolo, so blocking it off seems like the most logical and easy soloution. I have kept a piece of ebony wood that I made to block off my last strat's tremolo.

The grounding cable soldered to the claw that held the springs, I can just leave one screw there and solder it to that screw, yes?

This guitar really is turning into the clapton strat smile

Re: Which pickups did joe have in new day yesterday live?

Yeah you need some kind of ground to your strings so leave one spring attached and leave the claw in or 2 springs on the outside.  You'll have to post sound clips when its done. smile

Re: Which pickups did joe have in new day yesterday live?

Hah, my 9v battery is sticking up like 2mm from the back cavity, gonna find a battery without a metal jacket to make it fit tongue

You can count on sound clips, gonna take a while though, the boost was dispatched from england yesterday, and it's coming to Sweden so probably sometime early next week.

Re: Which pickups did joe have in new day yesterday live?

EXCELENT!

Re: Which pickups did joe have in new day yesterday live?

Hm, I don't like how it sounded because it killed the quack instantly. I could get some decent humbuckerish tones but it was not really what I was looking for.

Oh well, back on ebay it goes and I continue my hunt

Re: Which pickups did joe have in new day yesterday live?

Hummm well I hate that it wasn't what you were looking for.  But it was what Joe had in the video.

Re: Which pickups did joe have in new day yesterday live?

Are you sure he was using it?

I just experienced it like, it killed all the highs and made an humbucker tone instantly. I didn't feel like there was a blend between humbucker and single, I experienced it like instant humbucker with no more twang...

Re: Which pickups did joe have in new day yesterday live?

Maybe the lace sensors play a part in the tone as well but YES without a doubt in my mind He played an ERIC CLAPTON Model from 1988 the first full production run year.

Re: Which pickups did joe have in new day yesterday live?

I mean, are you sure he used the mid boost?

Anyway I've decided to give it another shot. Perhaps I wired something wrong

Re: Which pickups did joe have in new day yesterday live?

I think I wired something differently before, it sounds better now. But still it's not what I'm looking for. It thickens up the actual tone, but not in the way I want it to. I want more punch from my sound, they way a lp sounds powerful when hitting a chord through a nice amp.

Re: Which pickups did joe have in new day yesterday live?

I hate to say it but maybe you should be using a Les Paul instead of trying to make your Stratocaster sound like his.  I will say Lace Sensor and even the Vintage noiseless sound brighter to me then a regular Stratocaster pickup, but honestly I could not tell you if Joe turned on the Mid boost at all.  It was in the guitar and I find it very unlikely that he would have that guitar with it and not use all the options at his finger tips.

Re: Which pickups did joe have in new day yesterday live?

I will never give up smile

My subconscious has been craving for that tone for 3 years, I never gave into the crave for that tone until now and even though I'm not quite there yet I still love my strat...

I made a baseplate that I'm gonna try adding now...
I'm beginning to think maybe it is the amp after all. I'm gonna try some drive/dist pedals that do color the tone, since my fulltone doesn't really color the tone that might be the source of it's weakness.

I need to try a marshall silver jubilee head... smile

Re: Which pickups did joe have in new day yesterday live?

About the best Stratocaster tone ever achieved and done with an older Clapton Signature Stratocaster.  Watch as he changes the tones with only the volume/mid boost knobs smile

Re: Which pickups did joe have in new day yesterday live?

Yes, he does seem to use it there. Is the gray strat also an ec?

Re: Which pickups did joe have in new day yesterday live?

I can get the ANDY live sound perfectly with my Jap strat with texas specials
its the Marshall Silver jubilee that gets that fat saturated sound nothing else
comes close..  I spent a lot of time trying all the different single coil pickups for
strat and ended back to stock pickups its the amp that makes the difference
and how you play the guitar

Re: Which pickups did joe have in new day yesterday live?

I would kill for a jubilee head... But thing is, If I didn't spend a single cent ever, it would take like two years to save up for a ceriatone clone. And that's just a head ~~

substitue - Do you guys know of any similar sounding amps?

It makes me suicidal to know that I won't realistically be able to afford a jubilee head until I am like 30+ (If I decide for medical school)...

Maybe if I saved cash for a year or so and sold my LP (since I got my gibson at a HUGE discount I would make a profit from selling it) I could afford a clone head...
