Topic: Roger McGuinn

I read this post on the Clapton forum from a Chicago fan.  I don't know if there are any Roger McGuinn/Byrd fans on here, but if you are into acoustics, check out the Martin youTube and I also favor the Rickenbacker sound. wink

"Hey ... What's Roger McGuinn doing these days? Well ... I found out last night. He's touring as a solo act with a highly entertaining show that combines music and storytelling to trace his musical evolution. It's a great story of a folk singer turned folk-rocker due to the influence of "the Beatle beat".

If you're looking for "a more intimate evening of music" with a rock icon, you'd be hard pressed to find one more intimate than this. Great music, great stories, small venues, tickets from $10 to $30. The first 3 links below are spot-on representations of the show (except for the radio guy in #3). I've also included his websites for tour dates (U.S. & U.K.) and Bio, plus a link to his Folk Den project designed to propagate traditional folk music. The video with EC is included just for fun.

Re: Roger McGuinn

Thanks Angela!

A little background on his Rickenbacker 12 string. It's a limited release model 370 - known as the 370 RM (named in Roger's honor of course). It features the "Mapleglo" finish and has custom wiring - From what I remember one of the tone pots is wired as a master tone pot for all pickups and the other is the control knob for the onboard compressor - the only Rickenbacker that has one. The compressor helps to intensify the sustain and boost the Rick "jangle". The compressor pot is also a push/pull so you can switch it in and out. Also in the close up shots you can see the "toaster top" pickups. The dynamics of these also help to intensify the classic Rickenbacker "jangle". The 5th pot (with the small knob) is a master blending control. In mono output mode it acts as a fader between the bridge pickup and the middle & neck pups which are wired together. In stereo mode (separate output jack) the bridge pickup is not affected by it, with that control you can fade out the middle/neck combination.

Something unique about Rickenbacker 12 strings is that the position of the main strings and octive strings are reversed. On a typical 12 string on a downstroke picking sweep you'll hit the octive string first and then the main string.  Rickys are just the opposite.

Now that I have all the non-gear heads totally confused...  big_smile

Re: Roger McGuinn

Been a Byrds fan for decades and dig Roger, but I'm a huge fan of his former bandmate Chris Hillman and all the bands he's played in over the years. Roger and that 12 string sound was a huge influence on Tom Petty. When Roy Orbison passed away there was talk of bringing Roger in to replace him and keep the Wilbury's going, but it didn't work out.

Tom, I was at a fundraiser Fri. night and a friend who played had one of those Ricky 12 strings with him he just picked up on Craig's list and before Larry packed it up he let me pick away on it, and of course the first tune I strummed was So You Want To Be A Rock n Roll Star. That guitar has a one of a kind sound.

Re: Roger McGuinn

Eva- A Hippie Fest, now that sounds fun, definitely report back.  (Do you live anywhere near the Nuremberg Ring- racetrack?)

RIC - A thanks back to you.  I find the techie details fascinating, even when some of it goes over my head. tongue

Jdawg- I own one thing with Chris Hillman- The Southern Hillman Fury Band.  I didn't know about the talk of Roger replacing Orbison.  I'm adding another question to if I were to ask Joe, does Joe own a a Rickenbacker?
