Topic: John Henry goes commercial...

I wonder if Joe has tried this:

http://beernews.org/2008/10/gluek-goes- … piker-ale/

I just got into the OC yesterday evening and stopped at High Times in Costa Mesa to pick up some brews to take to a friends house, as he was grilling up some steaks. I did one serious double take on this one!

Of course I had to grab some!

Tasting notes:
The color is very dark - it pours with a creamy head reminiscent of a Guinness stout.

The nose is of roasted malt, with coffee and cocoa. Something else in there too, fruity and nutty. Nice!

Palate: The closest thing I can compare it to would be a porter. Creamy, thick. Again, roasted barley with dark chocolate and strong coffee notes. The 9.1% abv puts this almost into the barley wine range.

I'll have to go back for more. And this time have BOJH playing!

Major Tom to ground control...

Excellent find Tom!

Couldn't help but notice it was brewed by the Gluek Brewing Company here in Minnesota. I think technically it is the Cold Spring Brewery. I'm DEFINITELY going to be searching for some this weekend. I'll admit that I haven't bought a lot of Gluek or Cold Spring brews up until now. Most of their beers are pretty ordinary - certainly not worth seeking out. Hopefully this one will be different.

Re: John Henry goes commercial...

Good karma here.  The owner of the company is  the son of Italian immigrants and worked on the railroad, a working class hero himself who especially admired John Henry.  If you read the other link here, it tells the story of John Lenore.  I like his principles, 'family, faith and hard work.'

John Lenore has the same initials as John Lennon... wink

Instant karmas gonna' get you...

Back to work...have a nice weekend everyone. smile  Enjoy the March Madness!

Re: John Henry goes commercial...

I contacted the owner of a local liquor store that carries one of the largest selections of beer in the Twin Cities area. Because it's so new he hadn't heard of it. He contacted the distributor for that brewery and called me back. He said they should have some in the store late next week or the week after at the latest. smile smile smile
