Topic: Plexi Glass?

What exactly are the plexi glass panels for? I am guessing it is to concentrate the sound into the mics??

Re: Plexi Glass?

It's so you can blast high wattage amps.. The shileds block the sound upwards instead of directly out towards the crowd making everyones ears bleed lol.  I find it also makes the sound more articulate and not as muddy when they are used in conjunction with isolator pads.

Re: Plexi Glass?

Ever go to a concert where you ears where RIGHT in front of the speakers? The sound KILLS you.
Putting a sheet of glass in front of the speakers lets you turn it up without your ears taking a pounding. It will still be loud, but not piercing loud because the sound bounces off the plexiglass. I think it's the same as turning around you speaker cabinet. "but then nobody can read 'marshall'!" roll

I'm gonna try the plexi glass thing soon enough. It sounds like a good idea.
That or the weber beam blockers.

Re: Plexi Glass?

The baffle seriously cuts down on the blast factor.  I find it allows you to nudge the volume up one or two clicks to match the same volume as without the baffle.  Besides allowing the amp to breathe better, I find that it allows all of the frequencies to reach the ear at about the same time.  Without it you get zinged in the ear first with treble because high frequencies move the fastest.  With it you hear the bass and lower mids much better which gives a much warmer and more pleasant sound to listen to.  With the isolator pads it makes the low end truer as well.  You can make your own baffle very cheaply compared to buying one premade.  All you need is the plexiglass (you can find at almost any Lowes or Home Depot), a piano hinge, some screws, some finishing nuts for looks and VIOLA!  Tonal nirvanna.

Congrats on the JB Cat 5 and LP!!  One question, how loud do you have to push the Cat 5 to get you in Joe Bonamassa territory?  The Cat 5 website isn't very specific on that particular amp.  What kind of venues are you using it in and are you using an attenuator??

Re: Plexi Glass?

Pretty much am up in the 6-9 setting on Volume to get a good "drive" and thats with a Les Paul. Using Strats or Teles as I do as well, the amp is usually combined with either a drive of some sort(TS808 or other) OR I have this amp partnered with a CAT5 1900 and use them together(Lehle 1@3 amp switcher) with a DD3 running through the JB and a mild Reverb through the 1900. Some incredible Bonamassa tones. I can run this rig in most any size venue and remember that the speaker cab is mic'ed as well through the PA to some degree depending on the venue.
I have used a Komet attenuator in some cases with the JB Plexi on 10!!!

Heres a quick movie clip using an older 1980 Les Paul Studio through the JB Plexi on my cover of "Bridge To Better Days" The quality sucks as it was taken on a digital camera but you'll get the jest of it...this is an outdoor venue...take care...

Re: Plexi Glass?

Thanks man, that sounds great!  I wouldn't mind hearing a demo of just you through the 1900/JB 50 rig.  So that clip was without any attenuation?  You get a lot of gain and if anything the drummer seems to be the loudest thing on stage...I have been considering a JB100 or similar non MV plexi inspired amp and have feared they are way too loud.

No attenuator...plexiglas was there and yes, my drummer is a HARD hitter which makes smaller venues "challenging"...I will try and get ya somethin in regards to clips...lets stay in touch here on the forum...good hearin from ya...take care...Tim
