Topic: Off to the IBC

It's that time again and I'm looking forward to seeing bands from all over the world. The biggest thrill for me this year is the addition of an under 21 category that will premiere as a showcase on Friday. I finally get to see Tallan Latz perform:) I also expect to find a more BluesRock friendly environment with the addition of that category in this years Blues Awards. (Joe only missed by a very narrow margin I was told by the Pres. of the Foundation on the Cruise. I have no doubts he will be nominated next year after TBOJH and the RAH.)
So good luck to all although I'm, of course, rooting for Nothin' But Trouble representing Pittsburgh. Maybe some of the SuperBowl luck is still around;) I'll try to check in from Memphis. If you know of a band that's going I should check-out, please let me know....thanks..    Cathy

here's a link to the IBC home page if you want to check as the weekend progresses

That girl knew how to fly long before she met me! wink

The Blues cruise and Memphis were both already planned from way back, so 'only' the September, New Year and RAH visits were/are 'new'.

The only thing that bugs me is that she's going to go one up on the Joe gig count when she sees him without me at the Birchmere this year. But hey, I can't begrudge her anything. tongue

(Just landed safely in Memphis.)

25th International Blues Challenge announces Youth Showcase.

The Blues Foundation will add a youth showcase for the 25th year of the International Blues Challenge. Smokin' Bluz of Charlotte, NC has signed on as the Presenting Sponsor. Over the years this event has witnessed the influx of younger musicians competing for top honors at this international event. In an effort gain maximum exposure to this new crop of talented artist, the 25th IBC will include an afternoon(Friday, February 6, 2009) of these talented young people showcasing their talents for record labels, media, festivals, managers, talent buyers and the fans.

This will be a showcase, not a competition. Acts may also be competing at night in the challenge, but they are not required to be the affiliate’s entry for the competition. Each affiliate has the right to send a youth act for the showcase. While the definition for youth act is loose, we would expect no member of the band to be over 21. The essence of the showcase is to expose the blues world to future stars of this genre.

Cathy is heading off to this right about now - it sounds like a blast!

NBT went down very well last night according to Cathy - she felt there was only one other band at that venue who came close. The boys are on stage at 6 pm Central today.

More info if anyone's interested can be found here -

Re: Off to the IBC

OMG Michael..I know how you felt after your "Joe Tour"!! There came a moment last night when I came to the conclusion that I don't want to hear anything but silence for a while...Phew..Overload, to say the least!

Having said that, what a great experience. Beale Street is taken over by bands and fans from all over the world. The vibe is positive, the late night jams alone are worth the trip. (Of course I burned out and missed Michael Burks and Shameika 100 feet from my hotel!!)...Anyway....10 venues/10acts per venue..for the bands (6/10 for solo/duos)..so you can imagine how hard it is to catch them all...But, it's fun to try.

The Youth Showcase was one of the best events..EVERYBODY was blown away by the talent (better than some of the competing bands IMHO)..I went to the venue where Tallan was playing. I said "Hi" Roy and had a chuckle when his Dad said he had asked Tallan if he was nervous and he replied "It's just another gig Dad"..too cute..But there was nothing cute about his playing..I loved watching the faces in that room..He channeled that old soul that lives in him and played his heart out. I think he opened tons of doors!!! "Little Ivory Blues Band" from Central Pa. was another great band...I hope to see them again soon. Nice "kids".

NBT didn't win...but Albert Cummings, Michael Burks, Albert Castiglia, just to name a few, didn't win either, but benefited from participating. They did procure a festival, a few other bookings and lots of new friends and fans!! The winners of each venue competed Sat. night at the beautiful Orpheum Theater. I have to say this year's bands were all great. There was a group from Poland called "The Boogie Boys"...2 pianos and a drummer who also played harp. They put on a VERY entertaining show..Boogie piano to the max!!

Note to Carl..Jason Ricci was one of the hosts..he was a riot..he said to tell you "Hi", sang your praises, and said you are the only guitar player he will let play with them..wow..and I know you!

"Monkey Junk" came in 3rd. The cool thing is they were the very first entry for the Ottawa Blues Society. The club worked hard to make this happen and props to their President Liz Sykes.

"Ty Curtis Band" from Oregon brought a large group of enthusiastic fans..and for good reason. This young group had the audience on it's feet cheering. Great guitar and energy. Loads of personality.

"J.P. Soars", from the South Florida Blues Society, were the winners and J.P. also won the Albert King Award. We all knew it when he stepped up and starting playing ..Wow!

http://www.myspace.com/jpsoars  (Ironically, my roomie handed me a CD before I left and it was J.P.'s...another co-inky-dink I guess.)

The trip is worth it just for the wonderful people you meet. Our hotel (The Hampton Inn) had a sign in the lobby that said "If you want a quiet hotel, this isn't it"...truth in advertising...Since all bands had to report to their venues by 5 p.m., the hours before were filled with guitars, horns, singing... all signs of bands warming up for the competition. But, everybody rooted for each other, told tons of great stories in the lobby gatherings, and shared tech. talk.

Sorry this is so long..I could write tons more, but I'll control myself. If you get a chance go to this event...I'd put it right up there with The Blues Cruise..and it's cheaper!      Cathy

Hey Cathy,

I'm very happy you had a great time. Actually Carl, Tallan's Dad, called me today at work. He wanted to touch base regarding a couple of things we've been tossing around. Of course, the conversation turned toward the IBC. I asked him if you had come up to meet him and Tallan and he did say you did.

Carl actually told me that Tallan played at Club 153 and also a B.B King's Club. He told me that when Tallan was on stage, one club manager called another and told him, "Hey man, you've got to get down here to see this." Also, when Tallan was up on stage at one club, it was reported that people ran out of another and piled into where he was performing at. Ah yes, and the word spreads........From what Carl said, Tallan and his new band mates really had a blast!

I'm very happy Cathy that you got to meet both Carl and Tallan and see him perform! smile
