Topic: question about an amp

I've been looking for a lower volume, all tube, no-cheesey pre-amp buzzy amp and I think I may have found it. Does anyone know anything about the Orange Tiny Terror? I just played one running through an Orange 1x12 closed-back cab with a Vintage Celestion and it's the real deal. It's 15/7 watts and with the volume at 11:00 and the gain at about 1:00 is sings and grinds with the guitar on ten, and then cleans up and chimes at about 8. It's almost like it's too good to be true. This one is used and the price is right. Anybody know about any skeletons lurking in the Orange closet?

Blessings,
Larry

Re: question about an amp

We've sold a lot of them and never had one returned with a problem. The initial run was made in Korea and the following production was due to be switched to China but I'm not sure that has happened. QC is very high in both countries so I don't think there will be any issues with failures. The sound is very distinctive and we've found that with the Orange tone it's a 'love it or hate it' thing, not many of our customers sit on the fence. We sold one to a very high profile player recently and no complaints from him either......and he paid for his one too.

Thanks for the reply. It turns out that I knew the guy who traded it in--wanted something bigger and louder. He's really carfeful with his gear, so I bought it.

Well done, the amp has a very good reputation, and 15 watts is a LOT louder than the numbers would have you believe.

Orange sounds like a great amp...let us know how you like it!

Re: question about an amp

I got the Tiny Terror and it's a pretty accurate name. The 15W setting gives you plenty of loudness for small rooms, which is where I find myself most of the time. Actually I'll probably use the 7W setting most often because you can run the volume at least halfway and the gain about one notch over half and get a really nice blusey crunch with a Strat with standard pickups and plexi-ish overdrive with humbuckers or P-90s in my case. In fact, the P-90s at that setting yield an early Leslie West, Free (think All Right Now) sort of rich, harmonic laden overdrive with lots of fundamental so chords have a nice clarity but still have those ringing overtones that make you smile all over. I'm also finding that my Keeley modded DS-1 with the gain set farily low boosts it nicely for leads and adds just a touch of thickness without sacrificing touch dynamics.

I know there are lots of better amps out there, particularly if you're willing to second mortgage the house. But for this poor preacher smile for $575 used including an Orange 1x12 with a vintage Celestion, it's a heck of a package.

BTW, I'm going to run it along with my 4x10 Hot Rod DeVille. I'm looking at either a Whirlwind or Morely ABY to switch them. Any thoughts? I'd love to get a Lehle like Joe has, but they're anywhere from $200 to $450 depending on the model.

Larry

Re: question about an amp

Hey Guys,
For the question near the end concerning an A-B spliter check out the Tonebone AB-Y by Radial Engineering.  I have this pedal and absolutly LOVE it.  It has some great features and does not suck tone like some of the passive AB boxes that have been mentioned.  Its a little pricey for a splitter box but I urge you to check it out as it really is a great pedal.

Thanks for the tip, Mike. I haven't heard of that one--I'll check it out.

Re: question about an amp

How does it sound on 'cleaner' settings, every review I have heard/seen is all out distortion.
I used to own an old Park 20w combo, 2 x EL84, 2 x ECC83's and it did very good cleans.

Re: question about an amp

I had read the same things and was suspcious until I played one. It all depends on the gain setting. Anything beyond about 2:00 or so and it is hard to get much cleaner than some crunch, fine for more classic rock sounding rhythm stuff. If you keep the gain back, half or so, then you get that nice British bluesy, Plexi sort of overdrive, but can still clean it up at the guitar very nicely.

Re: question about an amp

Yep, if you want clean then look elsewhere. This is Orange crunch at it's best.

Re: question about an amp

Exactly gsj. I'm going to run it with my DeVille so I'll have the Fender for clean and a little edge, then go to the Orange for the gusto.
