Topic: Summer 2018 Country and Western Tour Setlist?

I am wondering if anyone has any thoughts on the setlist for the upcoming summer country and western concerts? I know that he is planning on covering songs by Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, George Jones, and Hank Williams. I hope those who attend the first couple of shows, let us know the setlist and provide some videos.

I am going to the Paso Robles show on July 28. Anyone else going to that show?

I’ll do my best here to get one up, but my Country tune knowledge is a tad shy. That’s a heck of a lineup of songs to choose from!

I’m unaware of the actual setlist to come, but, as one who enjoys a l’il bit o’ Country (and it’s derivatives) music, my curiosity runs amuck, so we shall see...

Set list (Thanks to Rick B)
Stay a Little Longer
Mean Eyed Cat
I’ve Been To Memphis
Darkness in the Face of the Earth
Honky Tonk Night Time Man
Crossing Muddy Waters
The Battle
Jambalaya
Break band intro
Thinking About Drinking
Cry Love
The Long Black Veil
Shoe Shine Man
I See a Darkness
encore
King Bee Shakedown
Self Inflicted Wounds
Just Because You Can

Thoughts?!  Only song I figured was to be included for sure was “Jambalaya

I’m going to bet on a John Hiatt appearance at Nashville (2 songs above).  It would be awesome if Sonny Landreth joined too (John is doing a 30th Anniversary tour with Sonny and  The Goners).  Not sure of guests lined up (if any), but if I was to hope for a few others (fantasies) I’d like to see with Joe...yeah, Vince Gill, Buddy Miller, Jim Lauderdale, maybe even Big Al Anderson???!

Anyway, here we go!

Re: Summer 2018 Country and Western Tour Setlist?

Last night’s show, Joe dropped half the songs and came out as the usual blues rocker with his extended medley into Sloe Gin after the mid-set break. Quite disappointing to me, but the crowd loved it. The 1st half was much improved over opening night as they came together. Anyone’s guess as to what it will become.

I’m with you Patty!  I want to see and hear the full ON vision and sounds Joe has in mind.  My country fantasies get the best of me at times.  Like thinking it’d be cool if the band pulled off Waylon Jenning’s song about Omaha...in Omaha!...but...regardless, Joe’s dug up some old obscure ones to suffice alrighty.  I could use a bourbon barrel serving of “Hillbilly Rock” (Marty Stuart)...

So good to see a post from ya!  Hope all is well enuff.  Countrified Congratulations on #52 by the way!!! cool

sad  I’ll still hold that ‘glimmer of hope’ for Omaha ... I guess it wasn’t understood or promoted enough that this was just a “small special summer tour” and that Joe hadn’t sold his bluesman soul...I’ll support whatever Joe deems he has to do, but highly disappointed that “fans” couldn’t just sit back and enjoy Joe getting to stretch his wings and “let’s have a little fun, shall we?” moment.... plj

I feel so lucky we got to see a set and a half of Joe’s Country music. I have some of the tunes captured, but with the new kill on sight policy, they won’t be on y/t, but I have upped a few to f/b.
It makes me sad fans won’t get to hear this.

Re: Summer 2018 Country and Western Tour Setlist?

I would hate to be Joe. You can't please everyone, and there are way too many people that he has to please, from his fans to those closest to him. All I want is for him to be happy doing what he wants and not feel pushed by anyone to do otherwise. Whether that be playing what he wants or for god's sake just taking some decent time off for a change. The poor man never gets a real break. Joe always puts his heart and soul into everything he does and always gives it 100% so I know he'll get through this and the tour will sort itself out. I look forward to hearing whatever he has in store for us cheering him on as always. We love you Joe.

If you look at other great artists over their careers, most have gone through this - balancing their performances to include the "standards" or "hits" that they're famous for and fans expect and stretching themselves artistically into something different and unexpected. When Dylan went electric, the world almost came to an end.

Right there with you, Patty! Hoping for the full-on country set in Omaha, and in St. Louis in November if he wants, too! cool

Re: Summer 2018 Country and Western Tour Setlist?

All I can say is regardless of the repertoire Joe Bonamassa brings along with him and band, I will attend his shows to the greatest degree possible at The Vina Robles Amphitheater.  I don’t drink the vino, but there’s some kind of aromatherapy smell of ground up gassed up grape juicy incense permeating the evening air.

For Those who had actually hoped for Country, it seems the cow chip frisbees as weapons tossing city slackers crowd got their way here.  The only country anything last night was up road a ways at the FFA (if you don’t know what that stands for you are definitely more of a city mouse than country mouse...) livestock auction!  That thing was hopping with country folk and smell and a huge traffic problem, vehicle and foot traffic, as it was part of the California Mid State Fair.  Meanwhile, back at the vineyard they are reticent to call a farm when that’s exactly what it is, the rock ‘n blues came out swinging knockout punches all night long.  The amphitheater has absolutely fantastic sound quality!  And I can describe the entire band’s performance in yet another one word review:
SMOKIN’!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, back to Alfred E. Neuman “What, me worry?!” mode, and hopefully once out of the California air pollutants, the Country Music can start kicking the shitoutta audiences like I know this band can do, cue Mott The Hoople lyric variation “all the way to Nashvile.”...

Re: Summer 2018 Country and Western Tour Setlist?

And another thing, I don’t believe the world almost ended when Dylan went electric, and I think it’s the same thing happening with Joe, separating the wheat from the chaff (even though there’s room on the lifeboats for all).  Dylan’s popularity skyrocketed and from this early precession folk rock was born with a stylistic bridge model applied time and again through the 1960’s and 1970’ and beyond to even today.   A major shift in music sounds like a brand new world to me rather than the earth nearly stopping spinning musically.  Basically, some few thought (think) they ran (run) the whole show.  They don’t.  However, I do believe Joe’s popularity has almost (in some ways already has) caught up with him.  Many, many, new people are taking the Bonamassa Challenge.  They are buying up and absorbing his past catalog and performances. But to place them pell mell into JB J&R production management’s lap demanding to sort out their way for public display is just not really fair, but also not totally unfair.  Joe has, over the years I’ve known him, shown the most remarkable ability to have his audiences become the chameleons rather than he adapting to their background.  Some just cannot change their stripes, so to to speak.  I for one think one does oneself a huge disservice not hearing out what is and ignoring what never should be...

Re: Summer 2018 Country and Western Tour Setlist?

Fine words Rocket. I, and the rest here surely do, remember the collective freakout when Joe trotted out BCC for the encore at Riverside when social media was a babe. A lot of fans vented here and elsewhere like it was the end of the world. With the current tensions floating around, Country is a curse word in Calilalland for the coastal crowd. Personally speaking, it was way overblown. A tiny handful walked out at Humphreys (I didn’t even notice) and the crowd response in my vids was good enough for most artists, with gouts of applause and piercing whistles breaking out for Joe’s firey chicken picken and hot rod country licks on solos. Mean Eyed Cat was foot to the floor stuff and an homage to Danny Gatton that’s going to have them on their feet and picking up jaws in Nashville.
A prominent Blues artist in LA posted a “Lighten up on JoeB” thread on f/b yesterday and a number of equally prominent Blues artists chimed in. His peers have his back.
Hoping this tempest in a teapot blows over and Patty and Coach get some of this good stuff too.
