Topic: Venues for a club show in the US

When we were talking with Joe at the Groove Legacy show I asked him if he had any plans on doing some small club shows in the US like he's done in the UK & Germany (Mr Kyps & Cavern Club, etc). He was interested in the idea but said he didn't know which place would be the best to do it at. We were both trying to think of some in the Maryland area, but off the top of our heads, none seemed quite right. Thought maybe if people could think of some cool places somewhere in this country that were special in Joe's early years then maybe he would consider doing it. He does seem to like those intimate gigs every now and then and they sure are a blast to be at.

Shank Hall in Milwaukee, WI! It was before my time as a fan but I think some forum members used to go to those shows. I'm sure they'd love to have him back.

Yes, Shank Hall...I saw Joe there about a dozen times.
It was also the site of Joe's last show with Kenny and Eric.
I'd be there in a heartbeat!

Belly Up at Solana Beach. Holds several hundred and Joe's played there many times. The last famous gig there was a secret one by the Rolling Stones for a private birthday party earlier this year. (now THERE is a cool surprise)

Re: Venues for a club show in the US

For 'world famous' in Toronto would be the El Mocambo, but they're closed and trying to renovate.

That leaves the "intimate " Hugh's Room on Bloor West.

Johnny A , Rik Emmett and many others have played the Hugh's Room Toronto

Well the Recher Theater would be perfect IMHO....anyone with a $12 ticket stub gets in!!! smile
they aren't really a music venue any longer but something might be able to be arranged.
Rams Head on Stage and Blues Alley are seated but still, he played them some years back - neither holds that many people
There are plenty of options all around depending on how many people.
good topic, I'll keep thinking.

He and I talked about the Recher Theater but as you said it's not a music venue anymore that's why that one was dismissed. And Rams Head was discussed as well, but as you mentioned that's a seated venue. Really need a standing venue that could hold at least 300 people.

Re: Venues for a club show in the US

There is a place called Space in Evanston Il just borders north of Chicago.A great little venue.
Davy Knowles is playing there this month. There are all types of music artists that play there from blues to jazz to rock  to folk. From famous ( Elvin  Bishop,Stanley Clarke)to the unknown.

Higher Ground in Burlington, VT; Chan's Egg Rolls and Jazz in Woonsocket, RI; Sculler's in Cambridge, MA; Stone Church in NH, or maybe he can play after the NASCAR race in Loudon next year (plenty of room since no one goes to the races anymore).  Also the Wolf's Den at Mohegan Sun.

The Castle Theater in Bloomington, IL....I just caught Walter Trout there in October.  Steve Vai has played there and they've got Big Head Todd on the roster later this year too.  Really cool small venue.

I like Rick's choice, The Belly Up in Solana Beach. Great club venue in an idyllic location. Saw Jackie Greene play there 10 years ago and Joe was on the schedule 2 weeks later, I circled his name on every calender I saw in the place. North San Diego County rocks!

Re: Venues for a club show in the US

Well the criteria put forth by Jane and Natasha for the Bar/Gig is:

Holds 300+
no seats - Standing room..

although vertically challenged people would have a tough time in a standing room only with 6 footers in front

Re: Venues for a club show in the US

I kind of came up with the 300-400 capacity thing because that's been close to the number for the 3 he's done so far. When talking with him it seemed like he preferred standing because that kind of show has more energy. That's why we kind of ruled out Rams Head and Iridium in NY.  Who knows how into it he really is, but it did seem when I asked him that he definitely had already been thinking about it, so I guess time will tell. Unless it's all just a pipe dream. I would think it would be cool if he could do one in at least 3 different areas of the country, East, Mid and West.

John Hiatt played there as well.  I'll add the Canopy Club in Champaign, IL.

Sportsmens Tavern in Buffalo. Seems to be really liked by all the musicians that play there. Minimal numbers of tables but has an upstairs viewing area to go along with downstairs bar area. 300-400+ with a preponderance of standing

Re: Venues for a club show in the US

For standing venue in Toronto would be
The Mod Club

Holds 620.
Floor standing
Side tables
Plus 2nd floor balcony with tables
2 large video screens as well

Re: Venues for a club show in the US

I think the criteria for a club show needs to be a room or venue that helped Joe get a foothold in a market like the Borderline in London. The big markets here are of course NYC, Chicago, Dallas, or LA. Joe knows those venues and who was responsible for taking a chance on him. I know the Granada in Dallas has that kind of history. One of the last shows the trio played before You and Me changed Joe’s direction. Joe had played a room in Deep Ellum, just a dive bar called Trees and the Granada Theater took a chance on him. Dallas has been a great market for Joe now he plays the Verizon which is 4,500 capacity. Of course Dallas was the site of Joefest which probably made the Granada show possible. Selling 600 plus tickets at the Majestic the year before so Dallas has my vote and it is a 3.5 hour drive.

I’m sure there are similar stories across the country that Joe could share. Although I thought of a few others of note. The Cellar in Struthers Ohio but it isn’t the same ownership or Pier’s which I think is closed like so many rooms that he played on the way up are no more. Zoo Bar in Nebraska is still around but Kansas City Grand Emporium is gone, and of course there is the Route 66 Road House ready to host his 40th. wink right here in OKC as well as the Will Rogers Theater scene of the Tuesday night sellout that the owner would love to re live along with 500 other Okies.

I was just saying to Phil that Jim probably knows a few places in his area smile And I agree that it should be a place that was important in his career, like Mr Kyps was for the U.K. Be curious to see if anything comes of this. Really would be cool if it did.

Re: Venues for a club show in the US

There are sooooooo many thru out the country I think if they thought it would work they would do it.
Joe and Roy have sooooo many contacts. I can think of many many in the New England area. To many to even discuss. He has played the Casino Ballroom at Hampton Beach many many times its a small club. The place to play I think is not an issue. My guess is it would be more of a hassle then it is worth.
My two cents
