Topic: 1987x

Hello all,

Big Joe fan. I have an amp question if that's ok. I bought a 1987x. It's my first Marshall. It was a good price and I pulled the trigger. I haven't even gotten it in my hands yet. I know it's an iconic amp and this will give me an opportunity to learn about why it's iconic.

My question is this; to anybody who has played a 1987x will this be able to get me into Joe Bonamassa tone territory? As I understand it Joe was using Silver Jubilee's back in the day and is using Marshalls, Fenders, Dumbles, etc now. I am thinking of his rendition of Tea For One, I Don't Live Anywhere, Blues Deluxe, Reconsider Baby, So Many Roads....

Thanks, I appreciate your thoughts.

Re: 1987x

Patience, perhaps no one with that particular amp has read your post yet. I have a Marshall, but its a different model, so I cant give an educated answer. But one thing to keep in mind, tone starts in your fingers. Joe could play a $50 Silvertone through a cheap solid state amp and he would sound like Joe. That being said, Joe is currently using vintage Fender amps with minimum effects. You can spend your life chasing tone, or you can get a few good basic pieces of equipment, and enjoy playing, I chose the latter. I have a Marshall DSL40, FET Driver, TS 808 and a DD3 delay. Its a simple set up, but I get a tone I'm very happy with, and to me, playing is more fun than chasing tone.

BTW, "Joe's Guitars Amps and Gear" is the correct section for anything gear related.

Re: 1987x

Hi Rusty,

Thanks for responding! The DSL is a VERY different model from the 19878x. I think, for me, it's not so much chasing tone as trying to see what was so cool about such an iconic amp. I still haven't got it yet. I'm wondering if these amps were cool because great players figured out how to work with them to make them great or if they were just great out of the box.

Re: 1987x

In the gear section there is sticky called: Joe's Big Reverbication - it has lots of info setting up Joe's gear.

try
settings on the Marshall are   Bass 10, Mids 6 or 7, Trebel 2 or 3, and Gain 10

(If only I had 1% of Joe's guitar talent)

also FWIW I think there are many folks who read the gear section but not the general one? I'd answer if i knew anything about it but otherwise it might be worth posting it or future gear questions in that section for more replies
welcome to the forum

That sounds like a very good idea, thanks!
