Topic: SRV question

Hi everybody.
Got a question about the great SRV. Really love his song "Life by the Drop".
A very beautiful acoustic song. My question is. Is there an album by Stevie that includes more songs like this.?I know there are some great albums by him,but need some help by picking on out.
Now own a very great "best of album" includes 2 discs with some of his great songs.

Re: SRV question

All of his CDs are really good. Except for "Live Alive". That one is kinda lame. He didn't do too much acoustic stuff, as far as I know. He did do some acoustic stuff on an episode of MTV's "Unplugged".

If you want to really get into SRV, I'd recommend getting his first CD "Texas Flood". Then, work your way through his CDs in chronological order.

The CD "The Sky Is Crying" is a really good compilation of (up to then) unreleased tracks, his brother put together.

Life By The Dropl is on Sky is Crying. It was written by Doyle Bramhall. Doyle was very influential in Stevie's singing style. His son Doyle II has been touring with Clapton recently as well as a member of Arc Angels.

Re: SRV question

Hi Marianne, besides SRV's own material, Let's Dance by David Bowie is a must have since Stevie played guitar on that session. I love anything by Stevie, but if I'm partial to one album it would be In Step. One of his best efforts and a reflection on his recovery from his demons.

Re: SRV question

Also Carmin Rojas Joe's current bass player appeared on the Let's Dance album. The only Bowie album I own.

That's funny. David Bowie is playing guitar in the video of Let's Dance.

Listen to the song at the 4:30 mark and on and hear Stevie get down. The end of Ricochet is also classic Stevie. The 1:40 mark on Criminal World starts a great solo and the 2:10 mark sucks, because Stevie was getting down and it abruptley stops But it picks back up in the end. Stevie get's down all over the album.

Re: SRV question

I like Live Alive. Half of it is from the Montreux 1985 show that's better represented on Live At Montreux 1982 & 1985. THe rest, there are certainly better Stevie live, but my gosh, considering how drugged out he was, it's amazing he's still playing that well. Change It is from the summer of 1986, right before he hit rock bottom. That track smokes. I honestly think if it had been recorded better, it actually would've been a much better album.

Hey Marianne. I love all Stevie including his DVD's. But, don't shy away from the MTV Unplugged. It's very good and if you want Stevie acoustic...that's the one...Cathy

Morning Cathy,

I got a quick question, on the MTV, I have only seen footage of him playing "pride and joy". Is the whole show available? Probably should go on the web.

Re: SRV question

Shred, I lost all the SRV in the divorce. I'm slowly rebuilding and got the box set last year. I may be wrong about an entire CD, but I remember the performance and seems it was more than 1 song.. Hummmmm                                                      Cathy

Re: SRV question

3 songs: Rude Mood, Pride And Joy, Testify.

Love Let's Dance.  Jim, I'm assuming you were never much of a Bowie fan but are you saying you never owned Ziggy Stardust on vinyl????? That tour was something I will NEVER forget!

Re: SRV question

I remember seeing Bowie back in 74 at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta.  He was way out there on his stage props.  Show was interesting but after that I lost interest in him. I do have the "Let's Dance Album" just because SRV is on it.

Music is good for the Soul...

No. I never much cared for as John Lennon said. Rock n Roll with lipstick.

Re: SRV question

Doyle Bramhall was the one who wrote it, and they were close friends. They shared the same experiences. Stevie was even the inspiration for the song. When asked if he was, he answered in The Sky Is Crying liner notes, "That's how it started, yeah. Stevie inspired it. It's like the title, 'Life By The Drop,' referring to alcohol, but it's used to represent any kind of addiction."
