Topic: Durham (& Cleethorpes) Blues Festival 2012

With there being no Glastonbury this year, the rain seems determined to turn every other outdoor festival into a quagmire or wash it out altogether.

Meanwhile, unless the River Wear comes up about 30ft at Durham, their Blues Festival at the Dunelm Student’s Union is still on; Saturday 23rd (24th down the coast at Cleethorpes).  For £25 you get Robin Trower, Martin Turner’s Wishbone Ash, King King, Oli Brown, Connie Lush, Henrik Frieschlader, Mitch Laddie and on the Acoustic stage:- Jo Harman, Del Bromham, Clare Free, The Dukes, Memphis Suns & Poplar Jake.

And the other advantage, being in the Durham Uni Student Union building, I don't imaging the "adult beverages" being silly money; nearer £2 a pint than £8.

Already arranging a couple of meet-ups, but if anyone else is heading along and fancies setting up a "Joe's corner", get the PM's flying.

Running times are on the event's site, doors open at 2:30pm running through till 11:30pm, first bands on at 3pm.

Mike

Train and bus station isn't too bad a walk, but by car, the postcode for your sat-nav is DH1 3AN. Just watch the parking though, Durham isn't greatly blessed though it is ringed with Park-and-Rides that will close well before the fest finishes. Same with the multi-stories in the city, but be warned, they're not cheap either.

Moderators - if you want to combine this with PSmith's post into a single thread about Festivals, that's fine.

That is probably a good idea to save them getting lost.

Come on the Blades (sorry Idolbone just had to borrow your line)

Re: Durham (& Cleethorpes) Blues Festival 2012

I'm really looking forward to Durham. It's a great line up for the money and if the drink is cheap then that's an added bonus!

Mitch, Oli, Henrik and King King are the bands I'm mainly going to see. I'd like to catch Jo Harman on the acoustic stage too if possible. I'm sure all the other bands will make a good impression on me, so it should be a great day out.

I'm staying in Durham on Friday night too, does anyone know of any live music that night?

In case anyone is interested there's a band from Edinburgh called Main Street Blues playing at The Tyne Bar in Newcastle on Sunday 24th June at 3PM.

Try Gary Grainger's show on Bishop FM on Sunday night. He's based in the area and lists local gigs: http://www.bishopfm.com

Me and the 2 sprogs are there. Took my daughter to see Oli Brown and she got hooked. She's 18 and its probably hormonal rather than owt to do with the music!! Great bands but a bit disappointed with the running time akkocated for Oli, Henrik and King King. Not planning on staying around for Wishbone Ash or Robin Trower - but beats sitting at home anyday!! see you there........

Cheers Duncan, I'll check it out. See you a week on Monday at Henrik gig.

Looks like we've got the same taste Dave. I had a look at the running times and will watch Mitch, Oli, Henrik and King King and then go and see Jo Harman. I'm staying at the hotel across the road so will probably check out Robin Trower after Jo is finished as I won't be in any hurry to leave. I might also head to the acoustic stage while Connie Lush is on.

If you find a street called Claypath, leading from the Market Place, there's a pub called The Big Jug, local covers band Tubesnake are playing. Expect a range of stuff from 'Stones, Doors, Trower and ZZ Top. That's about the best you're going to find in Durham City that night. Their young Guitarist, Tom Atkinson is worth listening to, if they let him step forward. That don't float your boat, there's Funny Bones Comedy night on at the Gala Theatre (Milennium Square, botton of Claypath).

If you're mobile, you could run down the A177 to Hartlepool and catch The Poorboys at the Cameron's Club (Walden Street) in town. That's the thing round here, it's either famine or feast.

Catch you folks on Saturday at Dunelm - look for Marillion backpack at tan baseball cap (and vacant expression)

Thanks Mike. I might check out Tubesnake after the football is finished.

Robin Trower has pulled out

Re: Durham (& Cleethorpes) Blues Festival 2012

Confirmed from trowerpower.com

JUNE UK TOUR DATE UPDATE: JUNE 22, 23, 24
Due to an illness in the family, the Redhill, Harlequin Theatre date (June 22) has been cancelled. Additionally, Robin Trower will not be appearing at the Durham (June 23) and Cleethorpes (June 24) Blues Festivals. (The festivals will continue as planned, however.) Apologies to all those who have bought tickets. We will try to reschedule the shows as soon as possible.

Re: Durham (& Cleethorpes) Blues Festival 2012

Thanks for the updates Roger & Dave. First and foremost, best wishes go to Robin & family.

Wonder how it's going to effect the running times at Durham/Cleethorpes as there's very little time to draft in a substitute headliner....unless Joe's available.......

I'm guessing that they'll extent the existing bands' running times, but, if there were an opportunity for a 3-way jam between Mitch, Henrik and Oli, I for one will be grinning like an idiot.

Mike

Edit - From the Solid Entertainments (Fest organisers) event front page:-
***** PRESS RELEASE ***** 19/06/2012

Solid Entertainments, promoters of this weekends Blues Festival have received the following message from Robin Trower's management;

"Due to increasing concerns over his wife’s illness Robin Trower will not be able to play at either Durham or Cleethorpes Blues Festivals this weekend.

Robin can only apologise for the undoubted inconvenience this action will cause."

All acts on the Main Street stage from 4pm will now be able to play longer sets, which originally were shorter due to the late addition of KING KING to the extensive line up; MARTIN TURNER'S WISHBONE ASH will now move up to headline position playing their full concert set.

Re: Durham (& Cleethorpes) Blues Festival 2012

Sad news for Robin and I hope his wife recovers well.  It's good that the bands have got longer sets, rather than add another act, as they were quite short.
Que the exists when Turner's band comes on?...

I'll be exiting after King King. All other bands have extended running times - so that's a bonus.

Re: Durham (& Cleethorpes) Blues Festival 2012

Seen MT's Wishbone Ash a couple of times in the last 3 or 4 years.   His voice is not shot completely, but he hits a few flat notes.  Whilst not Powell/Turner/Wisefield, the guitarists are pretty tasty.   Always put on a good show although Martin should not wear the white suit !!!!

For Brits - Guitarist Danny Willson was once the guitarist for Showaddywaddy !!

Would have liked to have seen Mitch get a little longer, when he hits his groove during Inner City Blues, he's jaw-droppingly good. I understand though, he'll be dashing off for a gig in Halifax that night before skipping over to do Cleethorpes.

Re: Durham (& Cleethorpes) Blues Festival 2012

Left Dunelm House a bit earlier than anticipated - before King King - had to play taxi to my son!!

A good venue for the festival. Parking is a bit pricey but Dunelm's split levels allows for 2 acts at once and it was good to have a choice with some diverse music on offer.

First up Mitch Laddie. Not seen him for about a year. Thought he was on fire - the young band are really tight at the moment probably due to their gigging schedule. He's really matured recently and it was great to be close up to be able to watch his fretwork.

Next - Henrik Frieschlader. He was my anticipated highlight for today - I'd not seen him before. I wasn't disappointed. He can really play - I just loved his cover of The Messiah Will Come Again. My kids asked if I had a tear in my eye when he played it - they weren't far off!! It was great to talk to him afterwards and get photo's. Watch out for a DVD in September folks.

We gave Commie Lush a miss. Seen her loads of times before - took the opportunity to grab a sandwich and watch (I think) Claire Free.

Oli Brown - another guy thats really matured. We've seen him 3 times in 12 months - twice showcasing "Here I Am" which is one of my albums of the year so far. The band are tight and really seem to be having a great time. I love Wayne Proctor's drumming and the short set list flew past far too quickly. Oli told us afterwards that a live album is planned and he was hoping to dust off some material from Open Road to feature on it.

Shame I missed King King - really like them too - looking forward to reading what other attendees thought.

Dave
