Topic: Used guitar strings/StringsforaCURE

Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month I thought I'd make a post about a project I am helping out my cousin Elisa Guida with.  Elisa is a 2 time breast cancer survivor who owns and operates a jewelry business for thirty plus years since graduating from college as an art major.  Recently Elisa secured non-profit corporation status in Pennsylvania, established a board and started a foundation entitled StringsforaCURE.

The concept is to secure used strings from musicians, turn the strings into jewelry so they can be sold on the StringsforaCURE website.  The money raised from the jewelry sales will be used to help advise newly diagnosed breast cancer patients and also supply financial support for those in need.  You can read more about this at the Mission Statement tab on the site.
www.StringsforaCURE.com

I was able to get some of Joe's strings through a joint effort of Jim Moody, Dave, Cathy & George.  As most of you know, George lost his beloved wife to breast cancer and a friend turned him on to Joe's music and he ended up meeting Cathy on this forum.  They secured Joe's first batch of strings right around the one year anniversary of George losing his wife.  So, Joe Bonamassa was the first musician to donate guitar strings and get things started!!  Thanks Joe!!

So, look around the site and check out some of the artists that have contributed strings.  Elisa lives in Erie, Pennsylvania, so she has secured some local artists strings. Strings that have been secured, but are not yet made into jewelry are from: Carlos Santana, Todd Rundgren & Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders .  Promised strings that hopefully will be arriving soon are: Oli Brown and Davy Knowles.  Also, there is a chance Tommy Castro's tech will be mailing in some strings.

Elisa has more Joe strings which are from 4 different guitars during different timelines in his career.  The strings were removed from: the Chandler Strat, Red Les Paul, the Gigliotti  and his Larivee Acoustic.  If you are interested in a custom piece of jewelry, you can contact Elisa directly.  Consider me a public relations contact for spreading the word, I'm not involved in setting the prices and Joe's forum is not the place to get into that.

Here are some ways you can help out if you are interested:

If you have an opportunity to secure a musician's strings, you can print out a pdf file, fill out the release form and mail it with the strings to the address on the form.  It is very important that the strings be used by the artist to be authentic. Think of it as recycling guitar strings that would otherwise be going in the trash to raise money for a good cause. If you need a pre-paid mailer, feel free to e-mail me through the forum.

Re: Used guitar strings/StringsforaCURE

A fabulous idea that goes to such a great cause! smile  I wish to thank both Tallan Noble Latz and Aaron Williams who jumped at the chance to donate. And I'd also like to thank both Oli Brown and Davy Knowles who have made commitments to do so. I think Oli's father, Graham, summed it up best. He said, "Roy, such a small thing for such a worthy cause, we would be honored to donate."

And last but not least, I wish to thank both Angela and Elisa for asking me to become involved in this great Charity. Mom always told me, "Son, it's much better to give than receive." Man, mom sure was right!

Also, you might want to get 'em while they're hot! wink https://www.stringsforacure.com/store/default.asp

Angela,
What a great idea to raise money for a good cause!
I bought a necklace for my wife earlier this week (shhh...it's a surprise) and have never felt so good about buying a piece of jewelry, knowing the wonderful cause I was supporting.
Check the website out everyone...Christmas is approaching and these are one of a kind gifts!

Re: Used guitar strings/StringsforaCURE

Hey Roy and Bill, thanks for the support.  Roy, I especially like the matching necklace and earrings made from Aaron's strings.

The original 5 pieces of Joe's have been sold.  What is really cool is, the person that bought the last piece was the same person that delivered Todd Rundgren and Chrissie Hynde's strings...the buyer had been following Joe's career for 20 years.  (This is the closest I am going to get to living out my rock n' roll fantasy.  big_smile ) It is a fun project to help out with. If I ever have anything to do with getting Paul McCartney, Bonnie Raitt, Carly Simon, Jimmy Page or Eric Clapton's strings, I'd be over the moon. tongue  Someone commissioned Elisa to make guitar string jewelry from one of the Carlos Santana strings for a very nice price and she still has 5 of his strings left.

Thanks again for the support.  smile

Re: Used guitar strings/StringsforaCURE

Thanks Elisa and Angela, a worthy cause indeed and very artistic creations. I'm surprised at how well they turned out, did not know what to expect. I will try to get some strings from Eric Gales, however he is still in Minnesota and it could be problematic with the short Euro tour coming up. I'm sending the photos and the form and hope they can get it to his guitar tech.
I see Larry Carlton donated, I'd like to have one of his maybe to just hang in the car like fuzzy dice.  big_smile
Keep up the good work!

Angela -

Thanks for bringing this up again - I bought a bracelet a couple of years ago, and just recently purchased one of the Joe necklaces.  I love it!  It is now one of my pieces on what I consider my "history of important things in my life necklace."  Interesting about the other "history" strings - might have to look into those.

A great cause.

Thank you all for this wonderful support for a cause that brings a lump to my throat. I am overjoyed every time I hear about a survivor.

I will make a point of tapping up every guitarist I manage to get close to from now on.

Just print out a bunch of the donation forms and hand them out at gigs George.  smile It'd take a total hard case to refuse this cause. Helen peeked over my shoulder and said "Christmas is just around the corner". Easy and rewarding shopping this year.  smile

Patty,

Thanks for posting a picture of your new necklace on FB!  As I wrote you there moments ago, I just purchased the last item under Joe's section...  https://www.stringsforacure.com/store/p … p?pid=160.    big_smile

I do believe that MY earrings match YOUR necklace!!!   LOLOL

I didn't realize it until I was reading Roy's post above and I went to look at what he bought (necklace and matching earrings from Aaron).  Then I said to myself, I wonder if there WAS a matching necklace for my earrings?  I went back to look and it was YOUR necklace.  I hadn't noticed the first time around because there was only one item left for sale under Joe's section so I hurried to checkout to buy it not noticing the other items.

If you ever need to wear the matching set, you can borrow them from me!  (teeheehee)  We're Bonnabuddies afterall.

I just sent Elisa an email asking her if she could make me a matching necklace and bracelet to go with the earrings.  It could be a necklace with the pink crystal or the olivine one and still go with the earrings.  I'll let you'all know what she says.

Re: Used guitar strings/StringsforaCURE

What a nice surprise to stop into the forum and see all the support from Bonabuddies and Bonabuddies treating Patty to a nice surprise!!!  In a world gone mad sometimes, we all have to enjoy random acts of kindness!!  In so many different ways, Joe Bonamassa has the BEST fans in music and there is such a fantastic group of people here!!  I guess it comes down to, Joe's music makes us all happy and it makes us happy to share the love.

Looking back on some of the comments, since the pieces are handmade, no 2 pieces are exactly the same, however, if Elisa has the inventory of strings, she can make a complimentary piece for a matching earrings and necklace kind of thing.  Also, if you see a piece from another artist that you like,  Elisa can make a similar piece from a requested artist you have in mind.

What I am trying to say is:  Don't ever consider a piece "sold out" unless you inquire.

And not to be a downer, but Thursday or Friday I got an e-mail from Elisa that a friend of hers was in hospice care.  She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007 stage 2 and was denied some further testing.  If she had been granted a pet scan, she likely would not have advanced to cancer that metastasized to her liver and pancreas with a 0% chance of surviving.

And NOT to get into politics, but I am concerned about the fall out of health care in regards to insurance companies.  I heard on the news last week that a woman battling breast cancer was notified by her insurance carrier that they would no longer cover some of her treatments starting in January.

Thanks again for the feedback and support.  My favorite pieces are the hoops earrings made from the thin wires with the little crystals.  Also, some of the pieces made from Aaron's strings are beautiful.  I like the pendant top left, the pendant top right with the matching earrings below. Nice effort on Aaron & Tallon's part to include an autographed photo with each piece.  https://www.stringsforacure.com/store/d … t=Williams

Hi Angela, you know Aaron and Tallan came up with that idea on their own. That's what I call a very nice touch. smile I would also like to say that Angela is right about the earrings and necklace set that I received that used Aaron's strings. They really are quite beautiful. Elisa does a wonderful job in creating these pieces; she really is an artist. Lastly, I'd like to tell everyone that what Angela said about custom jewelry is absolutely true. As a matter of fact, the jewelry is not only for women, but men too. I asked if Elisa could make a piece for me using Tallan's strings. I'd like to wear a cross like I used to do, so I gave Elisa an idea about what I would like and she is going to come up with something. My idea was to have a silver cross hanging in the middle of some circular strings of Tallan's, so I'm anxious to see what she will come up with.

Roy,

When you get your custom jewelry in your hands, please post a picture so we can see it.  I'm really interested in seeing what she comes up with on the cross end of things.
