Topic: Favorite Year in Music

The mention recently of Terry Kath, guitarist of the band Chicago, opened a Pandora's Box of memories of my early musical life.  Chicago Transit Authority got a lot of play on my stereo in 1969, but then I started thinking about all the other music and events of that year and came to the conclusion that '69 was THE year.
1969 produced the monumental Woodstock Music Festival and the infamous Stones concert at Altamont, Ca.  Speaking of the Stones, besides releasing their best album (imho), Let It Bleed, they also lost founder Brian Jones.
A few debuted albums of that year:
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin.  Led Zep II would also be released later that year.
The Allman Brothers Band - The Allman Brothers Band
From Genesis to Revelations - Genesis
Yer' Album - James Gang
The Doobie Brothers - The Doobie Brothers
Yes - Yes
Chicago Transit Authority - Chicago
Bands formed in 1969: Black Sabbath, Mott the Hoople, King Crimson, ZZ Top
Notable other releases:
Tommy - The Who
Then Play On - Fleetwood Mac (my fave Mac album)
Santana - Santana
Nashville Skyline - Bob Dylan
Abbey Road - Beatles (my fave Fab Four album)
Bayou Country, Green River, Willy and the Poor Boys - Creedence Clearwater Revival
Blind Faith - Blind Faith
Crosby, Stills & Nash - Crosby, Stills & Nash
Stand - Sly & the Family Stone
Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5 - The Jackson 5
Goodbye - Cream.......to name a few.
A couple of lasts - last public performance of the Beatles on the roof of the Apple building (1/30/69) and the last charted number 1 by Elvis Presley ("Suspicious Minds").

Re: Favorite Year in Music

I think i would agree with Curby, on 69. I would like to stretch that from 69 - 74  Musically rich years.

This album and band in 69, changed my outlook fundamentally !

Re: Favorite Year in Music

Got to agree on '69 over all. Two stand out years in my musical life were '64/Meet The Beatles, the album that changed everything for many of us. The other, '73/Pronounced Lynyrd Skynyrd, been a die-hard fan ever since. Although '69 was a banner year it was the gateway to the '70's, IMO the best decade of all time followed by the "fluffy" '80's. Flock of Seagulls????? The decade of horrors and MTV delivered it to us around the clock.

Re: Favorite Year in Music

67....  Monterey Pop.. It was the summer of Love.  It was all new and uncharted.  Everybody was out even the New Yardbirds and Jeff Beck.  No albums released but they were in the works.  Free too... Hendrix at his height... The Who, Cream..  John Mayall and BB King released Blues is King I have my facts straight..
Thats my vote... Also the best year for Marshall amps.. They were clean and unreal..

Re: Favorite Year in Music

I don´t know if 1969 was The year, but a lot of good albums indeed. I´d like to add to Curby´s list:
Spooky Tooth: Spooky Two
Jimi Hendrix in RAH
John Mayall´s Turning Point
Van Morrison´s Astral Weeks (68) and Moondance (70)
Leonard Cohen´s Song from a room
Country Joe and the Fish at Woodstock.

I actually liked a little of the FOS's stuff and enjoyed the music of the 80's.  I'll agree with those 2 releases you mentioned because both bands changed the way we listened to music.  Because music is so often connected to our personal lives, the 80's, because it was the decade I got married, bought my first house and the time I started really increasing my wealth was a happy time.  Bands like Flock, John Mellencamp, Tommy Tutone, Thompson Twins, INXS, Toto, Tears For Fears, Marshall Crenshaw, The Romantics, etc., etc..........hey, and some guy named Stevie Ray something or other.
Probably the decade of '64 to '74 is when contemporary music was at its peak, but I sured had a lot of fun in the Eighties.  That music always makes me smile and I could use some more smiles these days.

Re: Favorite Year in Music

The '80's had there moments, but I was in my 30's and started to realize I wasn't a kid any longer as I noticed that current music trends appealed to people a little younger than me. I did a lot of growing up in the '80's as well getting married and becoming a parent which changed me immensely. Watching VH1 Classic gives me a good chuckle lookin' back at the clothes, the hair styles, and a lot of the music. If you remember the '70's you probably weren't there,LOL!

You had your facts straight the day you played there JB. I loved it when you walked over and hopped onto the exact spot on stage where Jimi flamed his 'Strat and pointed it out to the crowd. That's good knowledge! Seems like yesterday, but it's been 2 years ago already.

yeah I don't remember too much of the 70s. I was there in full regalia, torching brain cells as fast as possible. I hear what Joe is saying, but for where I was living it was just 2 years too early. 1969 changed everything in my music world, mostly Zep and Abbey Road, and Yes. But also Jethro Tull 'Stand Up', I was and still am a huge IA/Martin Barre(chord) fan. 1980 was really a pretty good year, leading the way was 'Back in Black'. But there were many other good releases that year including Billy Joel's 'Glass Houses' that had like 4 top forty hits. There is some music of the 80s that will make you smile, Curby, but most of them made me LOL. That is when I turned to jazz because it was pretty big in Houston at that time. I'll stick to '69 - '78 just so I can include Feat's 'Waiting For Columbus' and the mid Genesis albums like 'Trick of the Tail' + 'And Then There Were 3'.

purple haze made me smile, Tres

Re: Favorite Year in Music

I'm going to go smack dab in the middle of the Acid Rock era and pick 1968. The bands all were peaking in 69 but had hit their stride by 68. You all left out one iconic artist and band though. Janis Joplin, Big Brother and The Holding Company with the Cheap Thrills album. That was some Blues! (remember the flap over the original title and cover art?)

My favorite 5 year span of music was probably 1967-1971 inclusive, but it's hard to pick just one - they were all good!

Re: Favorite Year in Music

What a great idea for a topic!! Hats off to Curby.

No way can I pick any one year as a favorite.  sad

I'm going to have to do some research before I come up with a fitting post, but I think I can pinpoint a few milestones in the development of my taste -

1967 - Jimi, The Doors, Cream, Captain Beefheart, The Velvet Underground, The Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver (I think)........

1973 - 1978 Little Feat!!!, Bruce, The Goddess, Emmylou, lots of reggae

1980's & 1990's - MTV wasteland horror

2007 - Joe!!

The more I think about it, the more Joe may be right about '67 if you look at the number of influential, legendary and timeless releases that year.

RIP Iron Man

Re: Favorite Year in Music

great thread, thanks for the bump Jane.

1978 - without a doubt because it was the year that really kicked things into gear for my music appreciation, - all of these albums or singles I bought and still have, and played over and over again.

AC/DC - Powerage, still their best and will never be beaten.
The Police - Outlandos D’Amour,  I know not very rock, but as a kid learning to play drums the rhythms blew me away.
Warren Zevon - Werewolves of London - amazing to discover the song, I still have the 45 single
Thin Lizzy - Live and Dangerous, no words needed with this one.
Cheap Trick - I want you to want me (live at Budokan), - such fun in a pop song!
The Who - Who Are You - Keith died just after release
Public Image Ltd - Public Image - after the demise of the Sex Pistols it was great to see John return
AC/DC If you want blood - awful recording but having just seen them play live for the first time this helped recreate my experience
The Stranglers - Walk on By EP - keyboards going off for a walk on their own by Dave Greenfield after two amazing releases in 1977, Ratus Norvegicus and No More Heroes
