Topic: Speakers head to head.

We all discuss speakers SOOOOOOOO much in this forum... here is a great resource to show what the differences between alot of the speakers we all like.  I think it would have been nice to play thru a Marshall or Fender but hey it still shows some major differences.  And they used a Les Paul.

Re: Speakers head to head.

It's so hard to evaluate.

1. Speakers take a long time to break in. How many hours are on the speaker? And did it take 'break-in' time for it to improve the sound?

I have an Eminence Governor speaker... which is their "answer" to the V30. It's not as ice-picky as the V30, but it's also not broken in. I like it... but my jaw isn't on the floor.
- Should a speaker drop your jaw, or just make your head nod in approval?
- Do you expect it to impress you more once it's broken in?
-Is it unfair to compare your new unbroken in speaker with your old and very broken in speaker?

2. Buzzwords. Warm, tight, fat, all these terms are so subjective... they all start to sound the same. I'd much rather hear "I belted out van halen's Aint talking bout love" and it nailed it... or the best tone I got out of this was much like "the ballad of john henry" and if you're looking for a "Hotel California" tone, this is not your speaker.

3. wattage of amps vs. wattage of speakers. For example, a Marshall Class 5 will drive a Greenback differently than a Metro amp JTM45.

I really dig this topic, but we should have these three things noted when reviewing.

Re: Speakers head to head.

Thats a pretty cool video, I actually didn't know that different speakers could change your tone that much. Now I have more things to research :-). So potentially, you could get some pretty cool sounds just by mixing at matching speakers in a cab??

Re: Speakers head to head.

I thought maybe this is as fair a test as you can get. Its thru one amp and one Les Paul.  Obviously there are so many other factors that affect the end tone.

Its not the final say on anything but its interesting to watch.

Re: Speakers head to head.

Yes you can. we have been playing with a marshall 4 x 12 cab. Trying various speakers (lucky to have a wide collection of vintage stuff on hand). Also trying just 1 pair instead of two and placing high and low. everything makes a different and its fun trying smile

Re: Speakers head to head.

I have done the speaker search thing and found this-

1. different amps sound different with different speakers so you might dig 1 amp with a vintage 30 and find the same            speaker icepicky or fizzy with another amp .

2 wattage and impedance is important- match the speaker wattage  and ohms to the amp  , but if you dont play exceptionally loud with say a 50w marshall with 2x 25w greenbacks then you will get away with it.

3 the best way to find the right match for your amp is try as many speakers and compare them . buy 2nd hand off ebay and re-sell if its not the right one .

I tried about 10 different speakers and ended up with EVM12Ls they are honestly the best all round speaker and indestructable , then again a PLEXI with 4x12 greenbacks  is hard to beat also  big_smile

Re: Speakers head to head.

...just based on that video..I can't see Tone Tubby selling one more speaker.

I'm happy enough with my Century Vintages...and they're good on the back.

Re: Speakers head to head.

Check out some Webber speakers they are sweet!  The old man died a year ago or so but his son is still keeping the family business running and everybody I've talked to says they are just as good as they ever were.  I have heard qc isn't as good with the son but we'll just have to see.

Re: Speakers head to head.

That video I thought the Celestion V30 sounded very clear, the swamp thang, and the Alnico Blue or gold?
I was hoping they would have tried an Eminence Governor. I have a swamp thang in my Blues Jr, and am thinking about trying it my Rivera now!
