Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

What legend Joey is, I was there the year he broke the record. On a side note my old next door is the sister of Tony Rutter and my brother did the race one year as  privateer. It is an amazing w/e.

Sorry Brack us bikers are rather passionate about our racing and little excuse needed to go on about it!

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Interesting how the cars this year have had to be made longer to accomodate the extra fuel, bringing with it ride height problems and some even have to move oil around the car as fuel is used to balance the car. Don't understand what all the fuss is about over McLarens rear wing though, as it was passed by the FIA!

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

I've never understood this bikes vs cars debate. I watch F1 and MotoGP and enjoy both. I've been to see superbikes and touring cars and both are huge fun to watch. I'm going to the qualifying day for this year's British GP with some old mates and then we'll watch the race unfold on TV the next day.

The other teams are only miffed about McLaren's rear wing 'cos they didn't think of it first. F1 is about pushing the boundaries (and rules) to the max. The others will just have to catch up. Me, I'm looking forward to the new season and even watched both practice sessions today - it's been a long winter. It's not the same though when you don't have to get up in the middle of the night for the first race of the season.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

After all the Blah-Blah business as usual.

Not much overtaking, attrition deciding the eventual result. As always with these first flyaway races it is a question of 'being there', as in the film of the same name. To finish first, first you have to finish. Vettel lucked out, this time and Alonso Mass and Hamilton profited as a result.

Worrying aspect is that Alonso admitted although he could run with him there was no way to pass off line. Button said the same as he was hunched up behind Scumacher with Webber behind him.

When will the powers that be realise that aerodynamic efficiency does NOTHING for the sport and it isn't what we are interested in? Technical excellence by all means but achieve that with greater mechanical grip and less downforce on the cars.

Since when did anyone buy a Mercedes because of it's aerodynamic effciency?

But then again this is F1, a sport which exists in a parellel universe with no relation to reality. Shame I like it. I shall remain optimistic that one day it will return to the values of earliers times. Huge recylable tyres, and aerodynamic aids whose prinicple purposes is for displaying sponsorship logos, less braking efficiency with powerful engines that run frugally on bio fuels. Now whose living in a parellel universe........ hmm

I gotta say.....you guys over in Europe are lucky to be able to enjoy the variety of racing available to you. I really enjoy F1 (when I can find it). Same goes for WRC, TT and GP bike racing. We're stuck with a bunch of easter egg cars all turning left! "Grab a Bud and let's go bass fishin' Jimmy Bob." Puuleeeze! Don't even get me started on all the caution flags. Push the car off the track and let's race!

Why don't we eliminate all the warning labels and let things sort themselves out?

Guido, I would suggest that you go to Sonoma when the Formula Mazda junior open wheel cars come to town. Tight competitive driver's class racing like you want to see. Lots of passing with some very talented up and coming racers of the future displaying their skills. Oh, and these cars are fast too.

Well you gotta hope the IRL make the right choices over the next year with the design of the new car. If they get it right the mixture of tracks in the series could return the unified series to the glories of old, although it would probably fare better if NASCAR took it over and ran it, then they would own the whole shebang and have a vested interest.

As it happens I have a lot of time for NASCAR although I draw the line at someone delieberately taking someone out and nearly flipping them into the crowd. If the don't clamp down on that, however good for the show it is it just ain't on.

But you are right we do have a lot of choice here. Rumour is there might be a tie up soon between the DTM and Japanese Super GT cars and that is a real mouth watering prospect. Silhouette cars with whole lot of gizmo's but wayyyy too much power for the tyres. I just wish we could have the Australian V8 series here in Europe. Now THAT IS RACING!

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

well F1 this weekend lived up to my fears, - I tried, but about 10 laps in decided that going to the pet store to get the dog some more food was more interesting, got back tried again but still was not inspired.  sad

As it is supposed to be the pinnacle of the sport it REALLY needs to provide better entertainment IMHO.

It is not so much a car v bikes issue that I have it is more a F1 V most other racing, - and there is the key word racing

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

The result was the best one possible (for me at least as a long-time Ferrari supporter) but I thought the overall race was sterile.  It was like they were all tippy-toeing around trying to preserve their engines and gearboxes and saving fuel.  The first couple of races during the season are never a reliable indicator of how things turn out but I'm hoping for a bit more excitement in Oz.

Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend

Don't bank on it Lynn. Short of a major shunt there won't be too much excitement until they get back to Europe and can sort the cars out a bit more. These 3 races tend to highlight how much work they need to do....and its a lot by the look of it!

For Red Bull it will be reliability which seems to be their Achilles Heel as last year. You could be right about the gearboxes. Thoses teams that haven't gone the long wheelbase option to accomodate the enlarged fuel tank have had to design complete new gearboxes to maintain a shorter wheelbase. Ferrari are known to have some fuel consumption concerns so their outright pace could be masked.

Tyre wear is the major factor they have to learn about and car performance on the softer or harder compounds as well as brakes due to the heavier fuel loads. When the get to somewhere like Canada where the brakes take a real battering they really could be tippy toeing around.

It is a shame. More half baked compromises in the regulation changes mean once again teams will be chasing up design blind alleys at huge nonsensical expense.

As a Ferrari fan you could be well set this year. I think Alonso will have an excellent title shot. He's very adaptable to a changing situation in a race and a master tactician in the car like Schumi was/is. I mean, anyone who can get themself in the absolutely right place on track just before your teamate throws it into the wall for your benefit has got to be cute haven't they?

Oh dear, what am I insinuating? Still, he's in the right team now for those sort of antics!  wink

Melbourne - should be a good circuit for the McLarens but I reckon Red Bull will be strong contenders as long as their fancy exhaust system doesn't stymie their chances again.
