Re: New F1 season kicks off this weekend
"Or am I looking at it too simplistically? So many ifs and buts …
Hansamike – you seem the right person to explain to me as a non-techie what the DRS detection point is and how it relates to the activation zone? Interestingly, from Canada onwards there will be two DRS activation zones."
My understanding was that the detection zone notes when a car is 1 second behind and enables its DRS to be used by the driver. I'm not 100% sure yet in the race if that is driver activated or automatic. Remember Sutil practice earlier in the season. He banged the button too early and spun all the way down the straight almost.
But once it is activated the flap is open for the length of the zone theoretically given the overtaking chance. Drivers still have the right to make 1 move but after that they are fair game.
As I said to PIT Road, don't forget KERS. That was definately a factor in Canada for Jenson. His KERS out of the hairpin got him close enough at the beginning of the straight as they were coming into the detection zone.
I mean F1 drivers these days. There is so much to do. Its no wonder they drop the ball sometimes. Crazy what they are being asked to do these days whilst concentrating on the driving.
Tony Stewart tested Lewis' car at Watkins Glen after the race in Canada. It was also wet or damp. He reckoned he got within about 80% of HIS ability in driving the car so he had another 20% to find he thought and then on top of that the car itself had another 20% more he would have to find before he could get near what Lewis does with it.
Not sure about his maths but you can appreciate what he means. He is an Indycar champion, Nascar Champion, Indy 500 winner. So give him a week and he would probably still be slower than Luizzi in the HRT. Its that difficult.
Great to watch though..........
