Topic: Gearfreak questions for JoeB from a newbie

I've seen Joe post on here a few times, hopefully he'll see and maybe answer this: -  I'm sure I'm not the first person to ask this (or maybe I am and the worst kind of newbie, but everybody had to start somewhere)

Joe - I too am a Gear head, and can't stop collecting, I just wondered if you'd ever do clinics where people would maybe get to meet you - I'll be going to the Glasgow show to see you live for the 1st time, your DVD's are amazing, I can't wait to see you live.

So I guess I'm asking how does a fan get to meet you and talk about gear with you!? - I suppose you'll get asked for advice on gear alot and free guitars too no doubt, but be interesting to meet you in the flesh and talk about it.

Please excuse the newbie question

I think Joe does some meet and greet style tutorials in the Blues in Schools.  www.blues.org  I guess you can write the foundation and try to get them to come to your town.

Re: Gearfreak questions for JoeB from a newbie

Joe spends a lot of time in Europe. I think he is really trying to bring the blues to other audiences, probably because the American audiences are too dumb to appreciate good music (BTW I'm American).  Nobody my age or younger that I know appreciates the blues.  Hip hop is dominating the airwaves over here and IMO destroying the art of music.  I find it sad that a true Black American artform is dying off with the times and garners no respect from it's youth.  Of course I'm generalizing but I am sad that now I feel that mostly white guys playing guitar are keeping the blues torch lit.  In Europe people have a respect for blues and I think Joe would travel there if there is a demand for it.  I would suggest getting a petition or something to try and set something up.  I would try posting on a different section of the forum because most of us here are just focused on amps, guitars, pedals etc not tours and seminars.  Good luck man hopefully he'll take a trip to Scottland!

Re: Gearfreak questions for JoeB from a newbie

if you just stick around the venue after the show, you might have a pretty good chance of meeting him. I've met and talked with him a couple times now. He is a true class act, and answered all of the newb questions i had.

I'll hang around and hope for the best, the Venue for Glasgow isn't the most fan friendly, I'll have to grab a roadie and beg!

+1.  He is a great guy who cares about the fans.  He was very patient with my stupid questions.  Most expensive show I have ever been to though....Had to buy new gear after hearing him.

Where the hell does one get a black-backed gold top anyway?

Yeah I hear ya man, it's cost me a Les Paul, Marshall, and Dumble clone.  Joe is about the most expensive guy you can go see if you are a guitar player!  Not even EJ gave me GAS like JB did, and went on a shopping spree soon after.  And to think I was so happy with my Strat and Fender Bassman before that... wink

Re: Gearfreak questions for JoeB from a newbie

Im scottish, and just to say, same as was meantioned about america, nobody likes the blues here. Its all pop/hip hop and worst of all, dance music (its fairly big here, and is bloody awful!)
I too am going to see Joe in glasgow. Can't wait for it, may try meet him round the back of the venue, but some artists stay in the venue for a couple of hours after a show.

Re: Gearfreak questions for JoeB from a newbie

I can add as well - blues / bluesrock is a niche music nowadays everywhere... What you see in US, same is in UK, France or Lithuania. MTV sucks.

But its good for Joe that he attracts so many different people with different tastes. Like me for example - I am not into blues (think Soundgarden fan), but I love his riffing smile And I really liked his statement "I'm not in blues business, not in guitar business". Not only cool guitar player, but got commercial sense, which helps artist a lot!

Re: Gearfreak questions for JoeB from a newbie

Its partly the same over here in germany.
I was in music shop recently to check some gear.
And the guy who works there didn't even know Joe.
I asked him if he is either kidding or simply has a gap in education... lol
I borrowed him my You and me CD which I had in the car.
This MUST not be...

Re: Gearfreak questions for JoeB from a newbie

If I wasn't a subscriber to Guitarist magazine (UK), I definitely wouldn't have heard anything about Joe. And I see he uses lots of symphaty in UK guitar press, probably to the fact that this country has been a hood of bluesrock in a way.

Re: Gearfreak questions for JoeB from a newbie

I think at the moment it's mostly everywhere the same:
Most people are into Rock, HipHop, Dance *ugly* Music, a few are into pop, and a few into the "heaviest" heavy metal that you've ever heard.

And then smile smile smile there are these people who listen to jazz, blues, rock etc. smile smile smile

And I think it's a impertinence that you go to a music shop, and read the music categories overview:
Rap - Hip Hop - Rock and Pop - etc
Wtf???!
To throw Rock, Blues, Pop, Jazz etc. in only one category is embarrassing! It's crazy! Stupid! Abusing!
All the great music styles with a requirement of musical taste, mixed together with Pop & Co into a "rubbish gloop"?!
(Someone who can speak real english will find better words... tongue )

Re: Gearfreak questions for JoeB from a newbie

and thats why industry bonzos are peeing their pants because of new way music is going to be promoted and they loose control of it. It means that soon artist talent/quality will again mean something and times will be gone when you take exotic dancer, name her Lady Gugu (pun intended), pay producer for a hooky dance song, pay mixing engineer to put "can sing" plugins into mix and here we go with a hit record and new star! smile I hope new times will give Joe much better ground to break into massive success.

Re: Gearfreak questions for JoeB from a newbie

Yes hopefully the internet will be the way of the future and be able to deal the record companies the final deathblow.  Youtube has made many would-be neverheardofs into record selling stars.  Getting discovered is a lot easier if you are talented and, if you have the talent, there is an audience for it.  Guys like Andy Mckee went from playing in coffee houses and small clubs to getting millions and millions of hits on youtube.  That in turn leads to thousands of more record sales than you would normally get, and if you are smart, can get a larger % of profits if you avoid the big record companies.  Unfortunately there will always be millions of people who are willing stand in line for 2 days to see an aging pop star lip sing and dance over a person with real musical talent.  I just hope there will be a better balance.  We complain that there is "no good music" on the airwaves but cannot stop supporting the garbage pop music that rotts our airwaves and televisions...if you cannot tell I'm disgusted with the music of today.  Hopefully blues and older rock becomes popular again soon like it does every 20 yrs or so.  BB King in the 40s-50s, EC/Hendrix in the 60s, SRV in the 80's, JB in the 2000's!
