Re: Question about your first Joe experience....

Forward Hall April 9th 2004 in Erie PA.
My boss at work had been talking about this young amazing guitarist....you GOTTA go see him Sue!!!  No thanks I would always say....I am too old to be going to concerts anymore, those days are long gone.  Well, my son was in his 2nd year of college at Gannon University in Erie PA, my 19 yr old daughter was looking around at all the different options this life holds for someone that age...........and my boss says to me SUSAN, Joe is playing in Erie this Friday...you gotta see this kid play.
Erie?  hmmmmm..........I look up the venue and it is .4 miles from the college house my son was renting with 2 other students.  As a mom missing her baby boy, I decided this would be a good opportunity to spend time with my son, and offer my daughter some enticing entertainment that just might get her to agree to come with me for some few and far between family time.  She had always loved Hendricks and my boss told her.....this guy does 'Are You Experienced", you will love him.
My daughter and I meet my boss and his two buddies at Forward Hall.  It was so close to my son's house that we walked.  We watched an adorable young  boy band as the starter.....and I thought, Oh this is cute.......glad it only cost 15 bucks.....then as we stood there, this young man got on stage with his guitar and proceeded to teach me one of the most valuable lessons life has..........NEVER under-estimate someone.  When Joe got done with us, we were screaming, clapping, cheering.........hugging each other.  I bought my daughter a Joe shirt and CD.......she waited at the table for the meet and greet, got everything signed and then the hall cleared out and the band started loading up their two vans.  My boss and his friends walked to the ajoining bar and decided to have a drink (no one was driving).  We just didn't know how to go back to normal after that experience.  We were laughing and talking........the only people that hung around.............and totally forgot about my daughter.
After about 20 minutes and feeling no pain, my daughter started tugging on my shirt, saying 'mom'.......I kept laughing and talking to my friends........"mom" another tug and a little louder this time.................finally "MOM!!".......I turn around and there she stands with Joe.  He had his ball cap on, tee shirt, well worn jeans, road worn tennis shoes, small school back pack slung casually over one shoulder.  "Mom......this is Joe"  "hello" he says.
After the 4 of us old folks recovered from the shock and got our voices back, we asked him if he wanted a to do a shot of Jim Beam with us.  "no thank you" he replied politely.........not his drink of choice.....we told the bartender, whatever he wants, give it to him.
We drank with Joe for hours.  It was so much fun.  I remember boldly asking him "so what's in the backpack?", he just casually opened it and showed me, just some spiral bound notebooks, pens, bag of guitar picks (white ones with Joe Bonamassa and blues deluxe on them)  he gave us so about 6 of them.....still have 4.
When the bar was closing and we said goodbye........my daughter and I walked back to the house, laughing, talking and she told me that was one of the best times she ever had with me.  We even got a little lost and wandered around Erie for an extra 40 minutes before finding my son's house, and it totally didn't matter.  We had just seen and partied with one of the greatest guitarist ever.  That poor boy......I think back on it.................. he preformed the night before in Pittsburg, had driven into town that morning....unloaded his own vans, set up his own equipment, performed sound check, tweaked his amps and tuned his guitars.........poured his soul out for hours.........then let us no-bodies talk him into hanging out and having drinks till 2 something in the morning..........knowing he had to get up at 4 am to do a radio interview, and repeat all the above steps.
It is funny how people say "it was a life changing event"..........BUT IT IS.  To see that kind of talent, that pure genious that can move you to experience so many emotions by playing a guitar.   I think I have averaged 6 - 9 shows a year since then.  I have turned countless newbies onto this amazing force of nature.

He has worked so hard.  Our own working man's hero.  I love him .............as I know all the rest of you do too!

Re: Question about your first Joe experience....

Thank you so much for that, Sue!! A truly wonderful story that had me smiling broadly and nodding my head all the way through!

Joe is indeed a very special musician and human being. With everything that he has to deal with in his career, he still finds time for his fans and even remembers our names when he sees us.

The dude is awesome, and so is his forum! big_smile

Re: Question about your first Joe experience....

Posted some time ago I know but seeing as there are some mewbies on here. Was on my way one Thursday night to our diving club for a few beers and switched on the Paul Jones show (used to be on a Thursday then). I turned on the radio and this music was coming over loud and clear! who the f... was this, it's awesome. I arrived at the clubhouse and the tune hadn't ended so I just sat there in the car with my mouth open. Paul then announced that it was this guy called Joe Bonamassa and that he was in the middle of a UK tour and would be playing a number of dates. OK, the only one that stuck out in my mind was Manchester Academy, so I resolved to see if I could get tickets when I got home. Later that night I logged on and booked three tickets after discussing what I had heard with a dive buddy earlier in the night. So Sue, trevor and me rolled up at Manchester Academy on the 22nd September 2006. Manchester Academy has three venues within the confines ofdf Manchester University. Academy 2 and 3 being the smaller of the three. A kid called Li'l Chris was playing in Academy 1, so there were thousands of kids queuing to get in there, plus another act on Academy 2, so it was all a bit frantic. We asked around where the queue for Joe Bonamassa was and we were the first to ask so we were inadvertantly first in the queue (This was later to become a habit). When the doors were due to open, the doorman opened up and said "OK let's have all the OAP in first - (the average age was well above those who were queuing for the other gigs) No wonder Joe used to say he looked out from the stage to see loads of people the same age as his dad out there.

Stone Soul River opened with a loud rocking set then Joe came on, dressed, how can I say this, very low key! Well he just attacked from the start and we were absolutely hooked. Sue and Trevor were at the back and I was trying to get to the front of the stage to get some pics, but ended up in front of the left stage monitors, so had ear problems for a day or two afterwards. During the show I saw this guy videoing the show, right in front of Joe and I thought, "Jeez, he surely must get that stopped" the person doing the video was - you guessed it Michael. Brainstorming show, Crowd absolutely blown away, got to briefly say hi to Joe and the guys after the show and struck up a lifelong friendship with Michael. Since then we've seen Joe about 15 or 16 times.

Her's some pics of that first show, Joe you are meaner and slimmer now my friend! Well done!

Re: Question about your first Joe experience....

Hey Michael, I reckon you're thinking of Mr Kyps in Poole. We met in the queue there. When I went to The Borderline (which I think holds around 150 people) I didn't queue. In fact I parked right outside the front doors and and just walked straight in and up to the bar lol I think that was 2005??

Re: Question about your first Joe experience....

Years ago when the Quad Cities had a real radio station there was a blues program on Sunday mornings.  It was on that program that I first heard Joe.  The song was Mountain Time.  I remember stopping what I was doing and just listening.  I had to find out more about this artist.  Just listening I knew there was something special.  A year or so later Joe played the Bluesmore blues festival in Cedar Rapids, IA.  I took 2 co-workers and one of their friends.  We were all blown away!  It was a perfect August evening at a venue that was ideal for music.  With something cold to drink and some great festival food we settled back to take in the show.  I really think that Joe raised temps that night as he smoked the guitar.  A recording of that show has shown up from time to time on dimeadozen.  That was in 2004.  It was at that show that I purchased Had To Cry Today which wasn't even out yet.  We listened to that all the way home. I have since purchased every album I could find.  I have seen him 3 times since with the latest on March 7 in Elgin, IL.  Every time I go away thinking that "This was the greatest show ever" only to see Joe go to another level the next time.  At this pace he will be creating new levels,  how cool is that?

AMEN to that Dan.........I was just telling the friend that turned me on to Joe, that Joe has risen to a whole new level.  His stage presence is amazing.........the interaction with the audience...........and his powerful guitar playing!!!
Thanks for sharing that,

Re: Question about your first Joe experience....

My first ever Joe experience:

In 2003 my famliy and I had four very nice days in New York. Of course the name Bonamassa meant nothing to any of us. On the 4th day we visited the site of Ground Zero, a humbling experience. But it was a beautiful hot sunny day so we walked along the Hudson Riverside. the air was warm, boats gently bobbed up and down on the water, the water sparkled in the sunlight. Then................from a distance music floated across from somewhere up ahead,
drawing us ever closer.

A magical mighty fine sound accented that beautiful day, it was Blues Deluxe played on that Gold Sparkling Strat by the one and only "who", well we all know who. Joe was playing for free in the park promoting his then new album 'Blues Deluxe'.

Two years later Joe graced us with his music in England, and I was there, as Michael said in a previous post, at The Green Man in Barnet just 15 minutes from my home.

RAH will mark my tenth Joe show.

Awesome, the Power of Joe.........

Re: Question about your first Joe experience....

My first experience of Joe wasn't seeing him live like many people here but it did result in a new direction for me.

In late 2007 I thought I'd convert some of my old vinyl record collection to MP3. I got the old record deck out of the loft, bought a pre-amp gizmo and found some recording software. I started with my John Mayall collection. Anyway, I was looking for the album art for Blues Breakers on Amazon when I saw the “people who bought this also bought” thing and some bloke called Bonamassa came up. I looked up Joe's website and listened to as many tracks as I could.  That was it – this is what I was looking for. A fresh, modern version of the type of music I loved years ago. And Joe – what a player!

But the big inspiration for me was going to see live music again after a break of many years. And it's all down to Joe. You see, after I'd listened to the samples from Joe's website and bought You And Me and Had To Cry Today I decided I just HAD to see him live. So I looked around and was furious that I had just missed the gig at Shepherds Bush in Feb 08 and I'd have to wait until Joe's next show within a reasonable distance. But that wasn't until the Cornbury Festival in July.

So there I was crossly thinking “OK, if I can't see Joe yet I'll damn well go and see someone else”. So I did. The first gig of my new regime was by a Joe but not this one – it was Joe Satriani at the Hammersmith Apollo.

I didn't get to Cornbury in the end but I did finally see the mighty Joe Bonamassa at Music Live in Birmingham in November. Right from the moment Joe opened the set with The Ballad of John Henry I knew that I'd come across something pretty special. Joe announced the RAH concert that night and that's how I ended up here looking for more info.

So that's it. That's the Story Of A Curryman   wink

Re: Question about your first Joe experience....

I love these "First Joe Experience" stories.  Kinda like a "What it was like being struck by lightning" first person account.  Same feelings, same "forever changed my life" effects!

My husband Lee was a big Joe fan, but because he loves so many different kinds of music, I reacted with that "Yes Dear, that's nice" when he raved about him.  Finally, he said, "Let's all go, as a family, to the Hagerstown Blues Festival" in June 2007.  He said we'd all enjoy just sitting in the sun and having some family time.  Reluctant 15 year old daughter and easy-going 17 year old son agreed to go.

Of course, it rained.  We went to a restaurant to eat and wait it out.  Heard one group play before it POURED.  Ran to the parking garage, where we could hear "20 minute delay, folks!", then another, and one more 20 minute delay.  Loads of people left.  At 9 pm, we heard Joe would go on.  Whining 15 year old sat in the van.  Joe opened, and I was stunned.  Dialed my daughter's cell to get her to get out of the van and listen.  Before I reached her, she was walking toward me, drawn by the music.  I grabbed her arm, "This is the best guitarist you'll hear in your lifetime!"  Family continues to be hooked, I of course am certifiably obsessed.  Thank goodness Joe feeds the addiction he causes with generous doses of new CD's and performances that ALWAYS step it up another notch above the previous one.
