I tired searching up the older threads about this stuff but couldn't find them. Anyway, a great friend and I went to the 2002 chesapeake bay Blues fest not because of the blues but because KWS band was playign. we had such a great time we vowed to make it my birthday celebration a few months late event every year forward. well i found out in January 2003 there would be noe Chesapeake Bay blues fest that year, I was just getting into pop country radio (stories there smile )at the time which is how I heard of this small show Vince Gill was doing in  Towson went to Recher theater website and I saw this cat Joe Bonamassa was going to play the day after my b-day. My friend mentioned above lives in Towson. because no fest and all, we make these plans since I had heard of this cat via Sunny's KWS band fan page.....
had a blast. best show I had ever seen....1-18-03

To Cazanovia John... Yeah it was a Party in the Plaza. I agree, phenominal player regardless of age. Missed him at the bar but saw him with Bloodline at Vernon Downs in I think 1994. How bout you? By the way do you know Johnny Wisnewski, also from Caz.

I don't remember seeing Bloodline at VD, but I did see them twice at the old Club 37 in N. Syr. (once when Aaron Hagar was still doing the vocals, and again the following year after he had left), as well as once in a semi-private (about 20-30 people) at their recording studio in E. Syr.

I did see Smokin' Joe's Vault (the early solo Joe band) at VD though.  Are you sure it was actually Bloodline there?  If so, somehow I missed hearing about that show.

Is Johnny W. related to Gina?

Yeah John, it was Bloodline at Vernon, they opened up for Eddie Money.  Not sure if Johnny Wiz is related to Gina. He used to play guitar for the Monterays.

This was my first experience too.

It wasn't meant to be. After hearing ANDY and Blues Deluxe I had actually booked flights to Germany to see Joe at Rheinberg which was relatively close to Weiss airport. Now the trouble with bucket airlines is that they do not always turn up. After spending a whole day at Prestwick Airport I had to turn around and go home again.

So the Flower Pot it was - dreadful yet intimate venue witgh great beer.  The  air ducting really did get to him - it was not the lights. Notwithstanding, it was a jaw dropping set with 90% of the crowd never had even heard of him before.

Somehow or another, he had heard that I had flown down from Scotland and he gave me a mention in the middle of the set. Later on, his 'Cry Baby' peddle (as seen in the Rockpalast DVD) started playing up and he ripped it out and handed it to me - still a treasured item that I will always keep. Ye, I was that fan.

Some memories will  never fade and I can say that "I was there"

Re: Question about your first Joe experience....

Thanks for all the stories everyone and thanks especially to Michael for sharing his videos from the Green Man. Excellent stuff...wish I'd been there!
I first heard of Joe in about March 2006. Three years ago...how time flies. I heard You Upset Me Baby on the Paul Jones show and was immediately hooked. I had to wait til October of that year to see him at Pacific Road Arts Centre in Birkenhead. I bet Geoff and Sue were there, but I didn't know them then.
I got tickets for my three sisters and a few friends too and we were all blown away. We got to meet Joe after the show and me and one of my sisters had our picture taken with Joe. No anecdotes of any great interest to tell but needless to say it was a night to remember.

That was the breakthrough in the UK.

I'm a huge fan of Bob Harris and Bob and I had corresponded for some 30 years. Bob first played Current Situation at my request in Feb. 2006 and he has been playing Joe regularly ever since then. Paul Jones picked up on his and has been a major sponsor since that time .

I will never forget how thrilled I was that Joe had been broadcast in the UK and the icing on the cake was an email from Joe's management (Roy) thanking me for getting him on the air.

These early days are special and will stay with me forever.

I'll have to ask Gina the next time I see her if Johnny is related (probably).

Re: Question about your first Joe experience....

5PM on a Friday night, December 2004, my friend Mark calls me. "What are you doing tonight"?
To which I replied "nothing, why"? Two questions which triggered a change in my life.
Mark proceeded to rave about this guy named Joe Bonamassa, including all the stuff we all know so well: Playing at 4, SRV at 8, opening for BB at 12, etc. He had all of Joe's cd's, but had never seen him live. He told me that he had been checking Joe's website and was looking at all these European show dates that were just all over the map and then, as his eyes scanned down, he caught sight of the first US show after Joe returned from Europe: Crystal Lake, IL. He said he actually sat there frozen, not believing his eyes. After a bit of time letting it really sink in, he picked up the phone to dial for tickets. Mark said he could barely dial the phone, he was so excited.
Mark tells me that a friend just canceled on the show and he had an extra ticket...did I want to go? Of course, I said yes.

I remember sitting in the Raue Center before the show, having never heard this guy's music before and really having no idea what to expect. The Raue Center is a beautiful old theater that was restored a couple years prior. They have a wide variety of entertainment there, including comedians, music, kids shows, etc. They sell season tickets and as we looked around there was a wide variety of people in the theater, including at least a dozen people that were at least in their 70's. Mark looked around and said "These people have no idea what they're in store for". Funny, because neither did I.
Joe came on stage with that gold sparkle strat and played You Upset Me for his opening number, and within about 30 seconds I was hooked deep. I could not believe what I was seeing in front of me. I saw one couple in their 70's get up after a few songs and leave. Everybody else in the theater stayed in their seats for the entire show.

I wish I could get a set list from that night, because I remember some songs (Blues Deluxe, Reconsider Baby, The River) but not all of them. I walk out of Joe's shows now with a big smile on my face. That night I remember walking out of the Raue Center STUNNED! I was in absolute disbelief that I could be so totally unaware of someone so, so talented.
I bought two cd's that night (Blues Deluxe and HTCT) and within two weeks had Joe's entire collection. I was gripped with this sudden urge to tell everyone I knew what I had just witnessed. I told friends and acquaintances that I had just seen the greatest guitar player on the planet. When they asked who and I told them, most people looked at me like I had lost my mind. I guess in a way, I did. I just never knew it would be so...permanent.

I found Joe's website the very next day and...OMG, Joe is playing in 3 weeks in Milwaukee at some place called Shank Hall. I bought tickets for that show and then for virtually every show within a 100 mile radius ever since, and have traveled further a few times. After seeing two shows this coming weekend, I'm pretty sure I'll have seen 24 shows.
That means the RAH will be my 25th show!! Didn't realize that until just now...somehow that seems appropriate.

Very cool video Michael....and my alltime favorite JB tune too  "The River" .....I really hope to see alot of slide at The Rah

Dec 20, 2006......the first of 4 consecutive nights at "Dimitris Jazz Alley" in Seatle Washington....we flew in from Sacramento just to see this amazing guitar player I discovered in Oct...I heard "Blues Deluxe" on the computer and went crazy!....having seen and heard more than my share of great ones, I had to see this Bonamassa guy live....went 2 consecutive nights, and the rest is history....I'm still here...got around 15 JB gigs under my belt and I'm just warming up

Re: Question about your first Joe experience....

I have a friend I met a couple years ago (through The Machine's forum) who is into the blues, and when he found out I like blues too, he sent me some CDs of various blues artists he recommends, stressing Joe Bonamassa.  I liked what I heard, but for some reason I didn't keep playing him over and over right away.  Then a few months later I noticed Joe was scheduled to play the Whitaker Center in Harrisburg (15 minutes from me) and figured I'd go check him out live.  Needless to say, I was blown away... sitting there alone WISHING I would've dragged along everyone I know to see this!  I was particularly mad at myself for not taking my son (a guitar player), so I ended up taking him to a show a few months later 2 hours away at Penn's Peak.  One of my Machine friends lives up there and she came too.  They were both totally amazed, instant fans.

By the way, Joe has yet to return to either of these venues, and they're both great venues too... the Whitaker Center in Harrisburg PA and Penn's Peak in Jim Thorpe PA.  I've requested him back at both... Penn's Peak has a place on their site to request an act, and I emailed the Whitaker.

I can't quite rap my head around the idea of seeing Joe for the first time at the RAH. The first time should be in a small club or at a festival, and it should be a surprise!!! big_smile

As we have so many newbies, I'll re-hash my experience one more time (briefly).

Most people are gobsmacked the first time they see Joe live, which is not surprising. Most people however, do not have the kind of life-changing experience I was lucky enough to have.

My wife died of breast cancer in May '07 (no need to respond on this, the wound is healed). On July 8, I took my first step back into the world when I was persuaded to attend a music festival. I was persuaded to go and listen to someone I had never heard of before - Joe. He blew me away in a manner that hadn't happened to me in literally decades. As a result, I wound up on this forum, where I 'met' someone who was able, in time, to 'heal' my wounds. I haven't looked back since and have managed to see Joe seven times now.

Discovering Joe literally changed the course of my life, and for that I shall be eternally grateful.

RIP Iron Man

Not to stray too far off topic, but this reminds me of something I recently learned.  I know a guy for whom Pink Floyd's Live 8 performance was not only his first time SEEING Pink Floyd live (he was only like 13), but also his first time ever HEARING a Pink Floyd song!  That just floored me.  I bet he was the only individual there who could say that, lol.  Of course he became an instant fan.

Vik,
My experience with Joe, obviously not the same as Pink Floyd because they were so well known. But I often wonder how different it would have been if I knew Joe's music or at least had heard it before I saw him live. Personally, I believe never having even KNOWN about Joe added significantly to the shock factor...I'd compare it to a cold slap in the face!
