Topic: Calvin Theater, Northampton, MA February 26, 2009

So here are my pictures from the Northampton show:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/24057301@N … 449443206/

It was very strange (but very nice!) being in the first row.  Felt like a private show.  Never had the problem of being too close to the stage for my camera before!  Thank goodness for the wide-angle end of my lens.

Eva - there are some pics in here of Johnny A - the Step Child was correct in that he occassionally miscued on some of the music, and his amp was at first too loud (although that seemed to be fixed fairly quickly) but they were definitely enjoying playing off of each other.  No other video - the one I posted was acutally my future daughter-in-laws - my camera doesn't do videos (or if it does I haven't figured it out yet).

Photo-Pete:  nice shots on the main thread.  Where were you sitting, and what type of camera/settings are you using?  I feel like I really need some lessons.

Patty - hope you are sitting down when you look at these!

Enjoy!

Sandy

P.S. Thank you to Rachael and Warren and whoever else is involved for setting up the photopasses, and also Joe for allowing us to photograph in the first place!

Re: Calvin Theater, Northampton, MA February 26, 2009

Very nice photos indeed. I have the same camera and lens setup as. I see you you were runing everything on auto and the ISO was at 3200!! Very little noise, impressive. I am on the front row for an upcoming gig so I think I will rattle some off on auto (cos it obviously works!!) and then mess around with some manual settings. Joes gigs have minimal lighting and I am itching to get some shots with him backlit. Its going to be fun. BTW I just bought a sigma 10-20mm lens and it is awesome value for money, no good for concerts but great for interesting shots otherwise.

Yeh, got one of those Sigma 10-20 lenses too. they are absolutely fabulous for indoor and landscape work. Tried it at one of Joe's gigs last year - not very good for concert shots.

It would be if you could get about 9 inches for his face but somehow I dont think that would go down too well.....

The other night sometimes I felt like I was only 9 inches away from Joe - at least his feet!

All of us photo nuts should try and get together sometime during RAH.  I would seriously like to learn a few things from others.  I use auto settings at concerts mostly because I feel like I'll miss too much if I take the time to play with the aperture and shutter speed.  What type of metering do you use mbcl?  I remember learning to set my Dad's camera using his hand-held lightmeter-boy do I wish that was still around sometimes!

Great pics Sandy!!!

Are you going to the April 3rd show in Rhode Island?  I've got front row seats for that show...It will be my first Joe show so I am really psyched about it!!!

Re: Calvin Theater, Northampton, MA February 26, 2009

All the metering is done throug the d300 itself. I usually use auto white balance, manual aperture and shutter. You can change bothe of these on the fly by using the front and back wheels.  You can get some nice effects by adjusting the aperture
I have done few concerts recently but the lighting has been so low it was not worth it. Such a shame as I was invited to thes small venue gigs to take pics. Joe usually has a spot light which helps lots. Im still learning myself so usually use the auto setting every other song as a fail safe. The camera you have is used by pros, its worth spending some time figuring it out.
