Topic: Question about your first Joe experience....

I know this has been covered before, but a thought came to me yesterday regarding one person in particular. That person is my friend and brother from another mother, Michael Lynch. I'm not sure if anyone, past or present, has seen Joe perform more times than Michael has. I believe it's in excess of 50 times now. However, I don't remember him telling us about his very first time or how he even found out about Joe. As far as a fan and supporting Joe, I doubt there has been anyone that has spent more money following, or stalking if you will wink , Joe around the world.

So with that said, I'd like to call him out and have him tell his story as only Michael can. Actually, I'd like to hear from anyone that wants to share their own unique Bonabaptism, as we've had quite an influx of new people.

Michael and anyone else, you have the floor.

That's true Günter. In your professional opinion, would you call me an addict? wink

Actually, I've always been fond of the number "4". Probably had something to do with the obsessive compulsive disorder I had when I was young. Good thing I got rid of that myself though!

Re: Question about your first Joe experience....

Well my first time seeing Joe was last August at Freedom Hill in Michigan.........It was actually KWS and Joe opened for him.....I went to see JOE!  Although KWS was a bonus, but make no mistake I was there for Bonamassa..I gotta say it was bitter sweet.. I was hoping for a longer set from Joe then what I got.....I swear to GOD it seemed like he was on stage for about 15 minutes..........It was GREAT although the crowd was not that into it IMO....most seemed to be there for KWS.  the set was about 35 or 40 minutes I think but it seemed like he was up there and gone soooo fast........This is why I want Joe to come back to MI this summer and headline so I can get a long set........By the way, JOE was great,,,,Im not bashing him at all.......I LOVED IT....just wanted more.

Re: Question about your first Joe experience....

It was about two and a half years ago and I was working on site in a steel works in South Wales not far from where I live.

A guy I knew asked me if he could stick a cd on and being in no position to refuse i said Ok thinking `OH MY GOD`!!
A few minutes in I said `who the hell is this? he said I dont know borrowed it from a mate `Bonny somebody.

The rest is history, all the back catalogue,Live ones,Cardiff,London, Liverpool,Berlin and this year,Cardiff again RAH and hopefully a couple of European concerts.

Being an `oldie`and going back as far as seeing Chrisy Mcvie when she was `perfect `  with Chicken Shack, the original Mac and Mayall I can only say that Joe has had the most impact on me than any other musician.I find it very difficult to listen to any other music. To me he is the best. His music punches me in the stomach and grabs my heart in his fist.Say no more. Thanks Joe......Glyn and Jo.

Joe first started playing London in May 2005 and in just under 4 years has gone from playing a small pub in North London to Headlining The Royal Albert Hall

Hi everyone have been called out to explain my first live Joe Experience , It was in 2004 that i got Blues Deluxe and was blown away by the music that my inner soul craved
Raw Powerful Emotional Blues with a Rock Edge , So i was delighted to see Joe was doing a mini UK tour in May 2005 , with 1 show at Jack Beards in Tooting South London , which i couldnt make and 1 show in North London at The Green Man , I Told a friend we cannot miss this show at all costs , how right was i (at all costs) so we ventured into Central London looking at record shops and had a bite to eat then caught the tube to Barnet , The Green Man is a small pub but had a room upstairs for live music , when we arrived there were already people there , so we were about centre and 3 or 4 rows back (what not at front .ed!  hmm
Joe came on about 9 , there were i say about 100 people there and if i recollect he started with "you upset me baby" and from then on tore thru a blistering hard blues set which i had not seen live since the early electrifying days of AC/DC , The actual power was Awesome and the one memory of that night that stays with me is that this was all happening in a pub ..
unreal surroundings , The audience were really into it and Joe was having fun too , Eric's bass was thundering and resonating around the whole room and Kenny was relentless on drums
All 3 of them were in unison and it was a tour de force of the highest quality underneath the raw acoustics of the room , highlight was "The River" & "Burning Hell" which blew us all away
great distant memories ... David A from USA & briJBfanUK (Brian) were both there but we did not know each other then , left right after show had 2 hour journey home , but all me and my buddy talked about was , that was oh so powerful .... that's where it all started and now this May i'll celebrate my 4th year of Joe Playing in London too , But it's a Tad more glamorous than

Re: Question about your first Joe experience....

I was visiting a friend in Houston in the summer of 2003. We were listening to a low-power campus station when "Current Situation" came on. I told my friend it sounded like some "old" blues singer with a young, hot-lick guitar player. We called the station and they told us it was a guy named Joe Bonamassa. We went back to his house, Googled the name, and found this website. We were shocked to find that the voice and guitar were coming from this really young white guy from upstate NY.

That was over 5 years and 8 concerts ago and my ideas about blues and boundaries have been in tatters ever since. The first show was at Sweet Caroline's. I'll never forget watching the guy who helped with the load in, replaced a blown speaker, negotiated with the club owner, directed the sound check, and nursed a really sick drummer change his shirt and come out and own the room with one solo. It's been nothing but deep respect and admiration ever since for a young man with that much talent, vision, and class.

Re: Question about your first Joe experience....

My first time happened in the summer of 1990 at Hanover Square in downtown Syracuse NY. I heard there was going to be this thirteen year old guitar prodigy playing and being a lifelong guitar player lover I went to check it out. I'll tell you I had a preconception that if he was a prodigy he must be good, but I mean he's thirteen, just how good could he be. Well about aminute into the first song Ibent over to pick my jaw up off the ground because I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I've been a devoted follower ever since. Joe wasn't singing back then and to be honest looked kinda chubby and dorky. But boy HE COULD PLAY! My wife and I got to talk to Joe after the show and he was the humble personable person we all know and love even back then. My wife told him to stay in school, I told his father, who was managing him at the time, that if he didn't make it big it was his fault because Joe was the best player I'd ever seen. Time has not disappointed though I think he still doesn't get the recognition he deserves Maybe this year.

Re: Question about your first Joe experience....

Wonderful stories everyone and Michael, now I finally know! wink You're second video really took me back to the very first time I heard Joe's singature tone and skill. Driving home and listening to Lady J, may God rest her soul, on WMSE radio, I heard that very song "Burning Hell" and thought to myself, "My gosh, who is that older man and how come I haven't heard his music before?" I missed the performers name, so I quickly raced home and pulled up the website to reveal the name of one Joe Bonmamssa. Went out the next day and bought a copy of "Blues Deluxe" and never looked back.

For one reason or another after that, I could never make a Joe show when he was in town at his old stomping grounds of Shank Hall. That is, until that fateful Sunday night, December 10th, 2006. With a sellout crowd waiting as patiently as we could, I thought to myself, "What will I hear and see when this fellow by the name of Joe takes the stage?" Two players came up on stage, one was Mr. Bogie Bowles who took his place behind the drums and Mark Epstein who picked up his bass guitar. Just then from out of sight, the most gut wrenching, heart pounding primal tone of a guitar sound seared the air of the darkened club and what can only be described as a jaw dropping beginning riff exploded. Then as "The Man" slowly made his way up a short staircase playing the beginning of "Just Got Paid", I finally caught my very first glimpse of Joe Bonamassa and snapped this picture with my old and simple camera:

I thought to myself, "My goodness, that's Joe Bonamassa!". Funny, it was the only picture that turned out that night and because it was my very first sight of Joe in person, I had it blown up to a 20 X 30 poster. A year later, Joe signed it for me and I had it framed. It now hangs over my desk at home and will always be there:

And that's how it all started.........

Re: Question about your first Joe experience....

Ireally am a newbie to Joe,first heard the LFNIP version of 'Woke Up Dreamin' on a compilation CD from Classic Rock magazine here in the UK. I like Nils Lofgren and couldn't believe someone was quicker than him! This guy must have six fingers,i thought! This lead to purchase of back catalogue -Had To Cry...and New Day Live to get yet-including John Henry, and (just arrived today!) the 3LP signed LFNIP !! Hoping to get to see him in Glasgow this April, but noticed he does pop over here quite often-will be a regular gig-goer from now, that's for sure!Got rest of family into him now, too. He's a regular on the i-pod now,at dinners and get-togethers.Just shows you,how much good music is out there however you fall upon it adds to the joy of discovery!!

Come on you Blades!

Re: Question about your first Joe experience....

I was searching the Itunes to find some great blues and suddenly I just saw this cool CD-cover of "You & Me". The first song I heard was "Tea for one" and since then I've always loved Bonamassa! When I heard the song I just thought, WOW! What the h__ll is this! It was the best blues I ever heard before. Since then I have seen Joe live two times and the third will be in Gothenburg / Sweden the 8th of May! I realy looking forward to it!

Re: Question about your first Joe experience....

First time I caught Joe was at the Cabooze in Minneapolis.  It was on a Sunday night and I caught the flu bug the day of the show.  Well, I certainly wasn't going to miss the show, so after a couple of doobies and a couple of beers at the bar down the street and I started to feel pretty good !  We went to the show and it was a great club where you could sit at the bar and watch the show from 10 feet away.  There were very few people there and it was like a small private show.  Needless to say the performance was more than I ever expected !

But the coolest thing about the experience, was when Joe and the boys came in the front door and headed to the dressing room I said hey to Joe, and he said let me get my stuff in the dressing room and get settled and I'll be back out.  I of course figured he was just being polite and at best I would get a quick hello and an autograph before the show.  It wasn't five minutes later and Joe came out and talked to me and my girlfriend for about 20 minutes and I just couldn't believe how down to earth he was.  We talked about a little of everything and got one of the posters autographed.

I went on to get pretty drunk during the show and kept trying to buy the band shots of Jack Daniels, but I think Eric was the only one drinking them.  The next day I had the memory of a lifetime and the flu so bad I couldn't drive home, but it was well worth it !

Joe and his fans are one of a kind !  cool

Was this one of the "Party in the Plaza" shows?  I'm sure I was there too.  After seeing him in the summer of '89 I didn't miss very many CNY shows that he did.  Did you make it out to any of the shows at the old Copperfield's bar?  He played there quite a bit for a couple of years.  He was phenomenal even then (as a guitarist ~ NOT just because he was a 12 year old guitarist).

To Cazanovia John... Yeah it was a Party in the Plaza. I agree, phenominal player regardless of age. Missed him at the bar but saw him with Bloodline at Vernon Downs in I think 1994. How bout you? By the way do you know Johnny Wisnewski, also from Caz.

Re: Question about your first Joe experience....

The Old Webmaster that was on the KWS forum told me about him. I obtained So It's Like That, and thought it was pretty good, but it didn't hit me first. But then I got Had To Cry Today and it blew me away. Brilliance personified. Since then I've been hooked. Seen him twice, but both were in the summer of 2006. Looking to see him again soon, but he's going to have to come close.

Re: Question about your first Joe experience....

I first saw Joe at Hampton Beach Casino Ballrom in NH when SILT first came out. I went to see Greg Allman who was the headliner. I always ask who the opener is and was told it was Joe. I did a search and heard he might have some talent. Clearly that was an understatement. I, have seen him since muliple times, turned everyone I can think of on to his music and bought every album that he has put out. My highlight shows were Scullers in boston where I was in the front row and the Opera house in Boston where I had front row. I just bought a new house where the 4th bedroom became my guitar room
( That was the deal with the wife). and my RAH poster is on display. So began my Joe Bonamassa addiction. Yes I too am a Bonaholic. Like they say One show is too many and a thousand is never enough. Unfotunately with a wife 5 kids two who are in college attending RAH was ot an option but I will live my dream through all my bonabuddies who do attend. By the way I just got my copy of John Henry after returning from vacation. Oh Boy Oh Boy. It made my 120 mile round trip to one of my offices rockin. Well now that I have shared my story I feel better.
