Topic: Joannne Shaw Taylor

Went see Jo at a very small gig in Worcester, England a few nights ago. Just £5 entry got me seriously good blues, she gave a great show. I would urge anyone see her live. The new album has been playing in my truck day in day out for a while now, only to be removed for TBOJH:)
I got a few photos (it was very dark and no front of house lights, so not brilliant) http://www.flickr.com/photos/mbcl/sets/ … 1639/show/
and for another £5 I get to see next friday in birmingham. For me to give up my poker night she must be good;) Then again I do like to see a chick playing good guitar:D

Martin,

Thanks for the photos!  I got a few songs from her new album and like them.  May have to complete that album.  She's a good guitarist and a better singer than I first thought.  Definitely someone to watch.  Ruf Records seems to be promoting her pretty well.

Re: Joannne Shaw Taylor

Yeah Martin, great pics! She sure looks like she playing with a passion. I think the album's really good, she's definitely going places.

Re: Joannne Shaw Taylor

Been waiting for that album for Soooooo Loooong. It took a couple of listens to bite but I really like it now. Sad that my fave tune ain't on it (The Trains). Go buy it folks... she's good and deserves some limelight.

Hey Martin,
That's a great set of photos - really captures the energy that Joanne puts into her playing. See she's gone an got herself a fancy new Taylor too. I would be interested to hear what that does to her stage sound, I've only ever heard her play the tele with the neck 'bucker.

I really think she's underselling herself at the moment at £5 a ticket, but I first saw her at the Roadhouse in Birmingham about a year ago and there was no entrance fee. Incredibly, the management just passed a pint glass around the room for the audience (of no more than 60) to put in whatever they felt like!

Joanne is a great talent, and "White Sugar" is an astonishing debut - bet she goes a long way!

PS - Martin - the Birmingham gig this week is Saturday, not Friday, according to her gig list. Don't want you having a wasted journey now! You can send me your winnings as a thankyou if that means the poker is still on!

Re: Joannne Shaw Taylor

Yes, it seems she has really started going places since her change in management team. Thomas Ruf deserves some credit too, he has picked up some of Britain's best blues/rock talent in the last few years and raised their profiles.

Well spotted, I would have turned up on the Friday, this is great as I can take a bunch of friends and family along with me on the sat.

I was surprised "Reach for the Sky" isn't on it. Great song.

Re: Joannne Shaw Taylor

Yeah - great album by Joanne and another great British prospect, along with Oli Brown and Jay Tamkin - Jay Tamkin is supporting the fantastic Billy Walton Band this sat, 28th Feb at the Half Moon in Herne Hill, South London - details at www.feenstra.co.uk - two great rockin' blues bands - can't go wrong!!! - if in doubt, check them out on youtube..........

Great to see you posting here again, Eldo!

Re: Joannne Shaw Taylor

Here’s a quick résumé of Joanne’s gig at the Riga in Southend last Friday so those seeing her this week know what to expect.

The support band were a local act called Crossfire who, I ws told hadn’t played together for around 5 years. I would never have guessed as they were not bad at all, playing some blues standards and SRV covers to a high standard. They were only let down slightly in the vocals dept.

Due to the venue wanting to get as much drinking time as possible in, Joanne didn’t appear on stage until 10.30pm. The set list comprised:

1.    Shake ‘n Bake – the SRV instrumental played at a cracking pace
2.    Going Home
3.    Time Has Come
4.    I want You To Love Me
5.    White Sugar  > Flintstones theme smile
6.    SRV Shuffle – not sure what this was, could have been Travis Walk
7.    Just Another Word
8.    Manic Depression
9.    Watch ‘Em Burn
10.    Kiss The Ground Goodbye
11.    Shiver Inside
12.    Black Country Soul (new song)
13.    Bones
14.    Blackest day
15.    Going Down
16.    Can’t You See (encore)

A great set and considering Joanne and the band didn’t get off stage until 12.15am and had to get to Leamington (150 miles) to appear at the Blues Assembly at 3pm, quite long.

Joanne and the guys appeared to really enjoy performing in front of the 100 or so that were there and judging by the crowd around her afterwards wanting to buy copies of White Sugar, she made a lot of new fans.

Joanne has a great bluesy voice, excellent songs and gets a beautiful tone from her Tele. Added to which, she really “goes for it” in her playing. I’m looking forward to seeing her again soon.
