Topic: Seasick Steve

I was trying to work out why Seasick Steve has become so popular , I guess in an overproduced music world people have been touched by the Raw Beauty of this , Music Stripped right back in the simplist form and Really just sung with a true beat (can you feel it) with just 3 strings and a stomp box , nothing fancy at all nothing pretentious and this ain't false but a man that loves his music , he's more surprised than anyone
It's so old but it's so new like he's been time warped out the 1920's and thrown into the modern music world , cos it's what a lot of mainstream people ain't heard and so many people are latching onto it and blues through this artist and loving it
At first , Just the name put me off , yeah i had heard of him and was just moving around one night not long ago on YouTube and caught him Live on Jools Holland Show , Wow what a vibe he created and you could feel all the audience got the groove too , and they'd go home and talk about and spread the word to their friends and thats why he's selling out the Albert Hall too ..... Incredible       Blues So Raw and Simple it's Beautiful

Re: Seasick Steve

A quick search turned up three other Seasick topics in the last four months or so, though of course nobody else made the effort to post so many links, for which my thanks, Michael.

He certainly has a major 'word of mouth' thing going over here, probably all down to his NYE appearances on Jools Holland. I agree that his 'bare bones' sound is refreshing and different, and probably as close to the very basics of the blues as we're ever likely to hear in the modern electronic age. More power to his stomp box! cool

Re: Seasick Steve

I heard Seasick Steve on Jonathon Ross' radio show yesterday morning. He chatted and played live with his 3 stringed guitar and he was great. He's a really genuine guy and as you say Michael no one is more surprised than he is at his success.
Joe played a track by him a couple of weeks ago, 'I started Out With Nothing...' . Joe commented on how he's so popular here but  nobody has heard of him in the States.
His appearance on Jools Holland show really brought him into the spotlight, let's hope that Jools can do the same for Joe soon. smile (keep sending in those emails!)

Re: Seasick Steve

I've been playing the 'I Started Out With Nothing....' CD on and off all weekend. I love it although he is a bit 'flavour of the month' with some people.

Re: Seasick Steve

That guy is awesome ... probably not on CD and not all day long, but I watch his videos from time to time and just love it. The guy is real and he´s got the beat!

Thanks for the videos Michael! smile

Reported elsewhere by Keith on this topic, that Ross Halfin soesn't seem to share most other peoples views about Seasick Steve

I just watched both programmes Geoff. You just have to love the guy.....he's so humble about it all.

Huh?? What´s up with the guys on this forum, PMS spreading around ... ? lol

I think George just wrote that in appreciation of Michael´s effort to post so many links, now what´s wrong with that?!

If you had taken the time to engage your brain before hitting your keyboard, you would have come to the same correct conclusion as Eva did. Moreover, if you had bothered to do the same search that I did, you would have discovered that one of the Seasick Steve topics I referred to was started by me.

I will accept your apology when it is offered.

Re: Seasick Steve

Getting back on topic, I've seen Steve and been impressed both times. You really must see him live to appreciate him, as he carries the crowd with him through-out his performance, and having spoken to other musicians and photograghers they say he is a really genuine and friendly guy.  He was happy to obligue when I got my photo with him too.

His new album "I started out..." is a little too clean and showbizzy for my ears though. Dog House Boogie is the one you must hear.

I hope others can benefit from the success of Steve, particularly younger guys with 6 strings!  While you're on youtube, take a took at Ian Siegal.  here's a man that can do downhome blues with a modern flavour and deserves to be equally well known.

Geoff, I agree about the Reading Festival, it doesn't pay just to play to blues crowds.

Amsterhammer, ill give you that apology. I obviously took your post the wrong way. Serves me right for breaking one of my own rules. Never read and respond to forums when:

A: your pi$$ed off
B: you are pi$$ed

Apologies for being aggressive on what is a great forum.

Re: Seasick Steve

Apology accepted, done and dusted. wink

I seriously wonder why I bother posting on this forum sometimes...

Re: Seasick Steve

Duncan,

You post here cause you've got interesting things to say!  Back on subject, I'm going to check out Seasick's music - I liked those vids.

Re: Seasick Steve

I was very resistant to this guy, all that hype - and the image looked a little contrived.Plus my son kept on about him.

And then I saw the Sky Arts documentary/ Reading Gig, he has an excellent blues singing voice and he plays great. I love his songs. Is he for real ? He doesn't look much older than myself and all that outlaw stuff about jumping trains ?? ( I once took 7 items through the 6 items only - but I'm not sure if that counts... )

Anyway, I've just bought 'Dog House Music' and 'Cheap' via Amazon for a snip,so he'll make a little money from me to buy some grits/ cornbread or whatever.

So yeah, all good - and Dunc- keep posting mate, I rate your opinions and your good taste.
