Topic: Hey, I won tix to a blues show! =)

big_smile I actually finally won a JamBase contest!  A pair of tickets for this Friday 2/6 to see "Guitar Blues featuring Jorma Kaukonen, Robben Ford & Ruthie Foster" at the Whitaker Center in Harrisburg.  I only know these artists by name/reputation, but I think I'm in for a treat.  I'd actually had my eye on this show for a while, but decided not to spend the money... and then I almost streetteamed for tickets, but decided not to be bothered... then I saw the JamBase contest the other day and thought what the heck, I might get lucky, and whadaya know!  And the Whitaker is a nice venue too, and only like 10-15 minutes away.

NOW I JUST NEED TO FIND SOMEBODY TO GO WITH ME!  I've already asked a few friends and concert buddies who can't go, and I have one more in mind but I can't call him til he gets home from work and he'll probably turn me down anyway.  So in the meantime, I'm going to put it out there... is there anyone here from the Harrisburg area who would be interested is seeing this show with me?  I'll go alone if I have to, but I hate to see a good ticket go to waste, especially when there are all these blues fans here! tongue wink

For Jorma Kaukonen and Robben Ford I would travel a bit, but not soooo far. You are lucky!

You're definitely in for a treat Vikki. Haven't seen Jorma, but Robben is a favorite of mine and we saw Ruthie last year at a blues festival and she nearly stole the show! She's really has more of a folk/roots style, but she is really talented.

Good luck and have fun!

Re: Hey, I won tix to a blues show! =)

Way to go Vikki, a serious guitar line up for sure. Jorma is a killer acoustic blues player, maybe you've heard of his band Hot Tuna which he and Jack Cassidy spun off of the Jefferson Airplane. As long as something doesn't rub Robben Ford the wrong way he should blow your socks off. I'd take that ticket off your hands in a heartbeat if it wasn't thousands of miles away, damnit. Have fun!!!

Wow that's fantastic Vikki! What did you have to do to win?
Have a great time. I've seen Robben Ford, he's very good but don't try and take his picture!!

Re: Hey, I won tix to a blues show! =)

Thanks for all the congrats and the input on the artists... pretty much matches what I've heard in the past... very much looking forward to it!  And so far, MY EXTRA TICKET HAS NOT BEEN SPOKEN FOR!  Don't be shy, people... either post here or email me at vikki515@comcast.net.

And I didn't have to do anything to win, except ENTER, which is done with a click of a button on JamBase (you just have to be registered of course).  If anyone wants to check out the other contests they have available right now (and they're always changing), here's a link to their Contests page: http://www.jambase.com/Contests/  I also entered the other 3 contests listed under Pennsylvania... wonder how often you can win?  lol

In Germany last year a lot of people took pictures: Maybe he has changed or he simply had his relaxed day.

Sorry, England is just a tad out of my way! tongue

The ticket is still available at this moment!  I know we don't have too many regular Harrisburg area posters here, but aren't there a few?  Where are they?  I know some of you saw Joe at the Whitaker... although he's worth traveling for, so maybe that explains that.  Still, I really thought this site would be the place to find a fellow blues fan to go with me! tongue

Wish my son didn't have to work... being a guitar player and lover of good music, he'd probably really appreciate it.  My husband is just not the music lover I am (I really don't know how I ended up with somebody like that, ugh, lol roll), and besides he has to work that night.

Re: Hey, I won tix to a blues show! =)

Vikki:  Surprised noone's taken you up on it....I'd make the hour or so drive but I'm already commited to band practice and can't cancel at this late moment....maybe you can sell it or give it away at the door?

I saw Robben do a short set at the Western Maryland Blues Festival a few years ago...wasn't as impressed with him live as I was with the recorded stuff....but maybe it was an off day.  Been meaning to see him again but he doesn't tour the East Coast very much.  I know Tarus52 is planning on seeing the same show at the State Theater in VA but I don't remember which day it is.

Well, have fun...Whitaker was a cool venue to see Joe.  (Thanks Jane!!)

Re: Hey, I won tix to a blues show! =)

Wish I had seen this sooner. I'm on the NY/PA line north of Scranton and would have gladly made the drive down to Harrisburg for that show. Unfortunately I have commitments for today.

Enjoy the show Vikki. You certainly are in for a real treat!

Just read a review of her new album "The Truth according to Ruthie Foster" in (German) blues news, which is full of praise: tremendous voice, good songs, good musicians including Robben Ford and Memphis Horns.
Vik, it looks that you are three times lucky to be in this concert.

Still looking... roll
I'll probably end up just giving the ticket away there.
Or maybe I should've let my son call off sick, haha... too late now though. hmm

Well I couldn't even give the ticket away at the door... seems nobody was showing up ticketless last night.  Now I'd found plenty of people would've been interested if it hadn't been for distance and/or prior committments.  Oh well, not the first time I've done a show alone. hmm

Great show... all 3 artists were terrific.  First Ruthie came out alone... loved her rich voice, guitar style and stories.  Then Jorma came out alone... liked his guitar better than his singing, if you can call it singing, as it was more like a step above speaking.  After a set break, Robben came out with a drummer (his nephew) and bassist... I really enjoyed both his guitar style and vocals.  Then Ruthie joined him on keyboards for one.  Then Jorma joined him for one.  Then they all played together.  Then the encore was just the 3 of them alone.  I think I'm remembering all that right... I was very tired.  Very well done and well presented, I thought. smile

Oh, and I passed on my normal tie-dye attire in favor of my Joe Bonamassa t-shirt... thought it would be a good streetteaming opportunity... and I got a few comments about Joe too. smile

Re: Hey, I won tix to a blues show! =)

Glad you had a good time. I forgot to mention that Jorma's vocals are an acquired taste. He's at his best when he plays instrumentals. Any chance you recall him playing Embryonic Journey an instrumental from the Airplane days? Jorma's acoustic roots were in the coffeehouse folk scene before he went electric with the Airplane. Did Robben play any acoustic?
