Topic: Gary Moore's new CD

My apologies if it's already been discussed here (I didn't search the topic) but Gary's new CD Bad For You Baby is great. It was released last September, and I just downloaded it from iTunes over the weekend. There's a cover of Donny Hathaway's I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know (made popular by Blood, Sweat and Tears) that's awesome. Good stuff.

Re: Gary Moore's new CD

Yeah Stu, I picked it up a couple of weeks ago along with Derek Trucks new CD and both excellent.  Gary is an awesome musican.

Music is good for the Soul...

Re: Gary Moore's new CD

I just cannot get into him. I have seen him 3 times and seeing him again next month (my son worships him). He is a great guitarist but I find his albums too clinical, as though he is reading the words from a book. I find his concerts the same, just like listening to his cd.

Fair enough...guess that's why they make both chocolate and vanilla, different strokes for different folks? I have not listened to a lot of his earlier work, and I've never seen him live.  I've only got his new album, and the double album that's half live and half studio called The Best Of The Blues.

With only those 2 records and the youtube clip of him playing Still Got The Blues as a basis for comparison, I don't see/hear the clinical thing you mention...but if you've seen him live 3 times, you've got a better feel for his stuff than I do.

That being said though, I am still digging on his new album!

Re: Gary Moore's new CD

Its perhaps a Little unfair for me to post a negative about him. Most people dig him and dig him good. I cannot understand what it is I dont get. 'Still got the Blues'' appealed to me more than anything else he has done. I am xtremely varied in my musical taste but for some reason I cannot slot him in him. That said I doubt he gives a toss:D

Re: Gary Moore's new CD

You're not alone in your opinion. A lot of people have difficulty in accepting that he is a blues guitarist. Because the success of his early career was in hard rock, metal and fusion even. He's played with so many people in so many genres, many blues fans can't accept that he plays it from the heart.

Fact is, he started out, as so many do, listening too, learning and playing blues. Peter Green, amongst others, was/is one of his main influences.

You've seen him a number of times live, so you know what you know. I've lost count of how many times I have seen him from Lizzy thru Ozzy, Colosseum, solo as a rock guitarist and as a blues player. In all honesty I find his blues skin suits him best. Watching him live I never ceased to be amazed at just how good he is. Fast yes, but with incredible technique. There is nothing he cannot do with a guitar but maybe therein lies part of the problem. Even I have sometimes thought that the incredible dexterity he can display robs a little of the feel sometimes.

Certainly the last time I saw him he seemed to be in a bit of a grumpy mood but he warmed to his task as we showed our appreciation.

He is an absolute professional, and a guitarist who has really augmented his god given talent with hard work. Couple of years ago I bought his tribute DVD for Phil Lynott "Gary Moore and Friends" and this I feel shows him in the correct light. In the interviews, and playing those classic Lizzy songs with his old bandmates there is some real warmth and humility there.

Also, Brian Robertson and Scott Gorham can both play a bit, but they are not in his league.

I too shall be seeing him again in March in Hannover.

I am also a fan of many bands and musicians but there are few that have crossed so many genres and performed to such a consistently high standard. There's nothing too much to try and 'get' with Gary Moore. He isn't a god. He is a hard grafting musician still recording original material and taking it to the streets. Long may he do so.

Re: Gary Moore's new CD

Good on you, Mike. I can feel the enthusiasm in your words.

Alas, I'm with mbcl on this.....I never really 'followed' his career after Lizzy and I was never really 'into' him, but I did really look forward to the opportunity of seeing him live. Unfortunately, that opportunity came within an hour or so of my Bonabaptism, which meant that I was still so utterly gobsmacked by Joe that I simply wasn't able to give him a fair hearing. He did very little for me that day. Mind you, not even John Fogerty could get me out of my Bonagaga state that day. big_smile

Yeah when that came out I was kind of hoping he would give us another celtic rock album a la "Wild Frontier" BUT it was my hope that he would hire on a name vocalist as his never strong voice, was by that time, shot for rock and barely acceptable for ballads. I notice Joe played his version of "Shapes of Things" on his show the other day. That was an awesome cover (particularly live) once again excepting the vocals......

Re: Gary Moore's new CD

I think that he is one of if not the best all around guitar player I have ever heard....and I've heard them all.  Like someone said before, he has played so many types/genres of music that no one else has even come CLOSE to duplicating....tell me one....and don't say Joe...the only one who I can think of is Tommy Bolin but he never possessed the shere power that Gary plays with....it's not just the technique, the absolute sonic sounds that come from whatever he is playing.....and he's been doing it for a LONG time, too.

Listen to his entire catalog and then think about who is his equal....there ain't one

Re: Gary Moore's new CD

Well his live performances do not grip me at all. Not doubting his ability but he has no presence  on stage. Having seen him 3 times with Lizzy (different thing altogether) and 3  times on his own. As I said before his concerts are just like the CD, he doesnt seem to go that extra bit for those who make the effort to buy his tickets. Maybe this next show will be different. Time will tell.

Fair enough....but you are very lucky in my opinion to have been able to see him as many times as you have....I wonder though, what exactly are you looking for with regard to stage presence?  I saw him in Boston in 1987 and don't remember anything dull about his show...seemed on par w/ the likes of Frank Marino or Roy Buchanan or Kim Simmonds etc...

Re: Gary Moore's new CD

I can explain  it by saying that I would not buy tickets for his shows myself. If others want to buy me tickets then no problem but I could quite happily sit at the bar. Maybe this will be the show that grips me. I certainly hope I have to eat my words. To me he is just someone playing the guitar when on stage, may well be tecnnically brilliant but the performance does not reach out.

Re: Gary Moore's new CD

Here's an interesting topic that's causing some debate.

When I went to book my tickets to see JB in Wolverhampton, I noticed Gary Moore was appearing at the same venue just a few days after Joe. Now I've not seen Gary live before but I thought what a great week or so it would be if I could see 2 JB concerts (RAH too) with another highly rated guitarist sandwiched in between so I got me some GM tickets.

I've since bought his new album, and, well, It's another good Blues album, but apart from a couple of tracks his playing didn't exactly "grab" me.

Mikes point about his playing lacking "the feel" finds favour with me too.

Don't get me wrong, I hope Gary lives up to his reputation live - I'm still looking forward to the show. One of my favourite songs is Gary's version of "Don't Believe a Word" on the Phil Lynott Tribute DVD - worth searching out on YouTube if you haven't seen it.

Please be in no doubt that this is the REAL ME! Beware imposters........................

Re: Gary Moore's new CD

It´s interesting that I find my ambivalence towards GM reflected in a lot of posts here. I own two of his blues albums  which I hardly ever listen to.(I think it was a present from a patient.) From time to time I try it again because I think  he is technically quite good. But I don´t really get a kick, get bored soon and the CDs go back to the shelves for another long time. As I´ve written somewhere else I really like his contributions to Otis Taylor´s Definition of a circle: so I am sure to see Gary Moore one day live, because Otis Taylor is opening for him sometimes.
