Agree . As to the Beatles - I think you can´t really take them in this kind of ranking, because they are of a different category. They are not only a pop/rock group, but more a piece of art or a cultural institution. You are right: they are/were not the best musicians, not the best singers, not the best looking guys etc., but they had a synthesis of good songs, a good performance, good lyrics, intelligent/intellectual statements, acting out a lifestyle of a generation and inviting to identify with.

And nowadays everybody knows them and their songs, they are part of the collective knowledge. If we have nearby a village festival with this terrible Bavarian ooomta-music, you can be sure to hear a lot of Beatles songs, but only one Stones song (starting with S).
Günter

Günter I agree with your assessment of them being pop stars.  The 60's version of Backstreet Boys.  The Beatles success was partly that Brian Epstein was such a good promoter (got them that early gig on Ed Sullivan) and partly I think that 90% of all the women in their child bearing years wanted Sir Paul to father their offspring... (question - how DID he wind up with that psycho Heather Mills???)
Come to think of it, I've never heard a song by The Who converted to Muzak (elevator music).

I do agree with their early image being right place right time. What they did from there was no backstreet boys sceenario. Revolver, Rubber Soul, Sgt Peppers, The White Album, Abbey Road changed music, and pop culture.

Not many bands you first heard when you were 6 years old could evolve with you and keep your attention thoughout their career and beyond. They turned on the music switch in me. Of course I went on to the Who, Stones, Zep, and then to the blues but the Beatles is where it began.

the reason I play music...

Re: Beatles Apreciation Thread

The 50th Anniversary of the Beatles playing on Ed Sullivan will be February 9th.  For all the new and old Beatles fans out there, here are some important dates to put on your calendar. smile

This Thursday January 30th on CNN @9:00PM
http://cnnpressroom.blogs.cnn.com/2014/ … ay-jan-30/

Sunday February 9th on CBS, @8:00PM
http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/musi … e/4956881/

I have to admit, I suffered through the Grammys mainly to see Paul and Ringo. I still LOVE all the Beatles, they individually brought their unique talent to the group.  I often think of John & George in a special way that saddens me sometimes.

One of my kids bought me a book for Christmas which I haven't read yet: Beatles vs. Stones by John McMillian.  The clash of musical titans. From talking to a few people from England, one had to take sides...Beatles or Stones. I bought my hubby a cool book for Christmas, almost like an encyclopedia: All the Songs, The story behind every BEATLES release. Its laid out quite well with all sorts of cool details.

I still laugh when I see that old quote from Decca Records when they turned down the Beatles, "guitar groups are on the way out". lol

Thanks for resurrecting this old thread and the info. Didn't realize the Beatles anniversary on Ed Sullivan coincided with the anniversary of my birth. wink I was 6 years old that day.

Angela, that sounds like the kind of book many of us would be interested in and will make a nice Valentine's Day pressie for Mrs W. Would you mind telling us the title and who compiled it, please?

You're right about the Beatles v Stones thing in the UK. It was a frequently asked question in the playground when I was a nipper. You had to be one or the other. There was also the parent's angle. Many tried to steer their offspring away from the Stones which, of course, usually had the opposite effect. lol

Thanks

The ISBN# is: 978-1-57912-952-1.

All the Songs ~The story behind every BEATLES release by Jean- Michel Guesdon & Philippe Margotin. Its 671 pages, 2013 copyright. This is the book, I paid  about $29.00 in Costco. It has a bright red cover, perfectly suited for Valentine's Day! tongue

Funny about taking sides on the 2 bands. My dad thought the Beatles were outrageous with their long hair on the Ed Sullivan show! lol

Jim, great birthday, you were destine to be a music fan!!

Re: Beatles Apreciation Thread

Thank you for the info, Angela, that's quite a tome. As usual the UK is stung on prices and the cheapest I can see is at Amazon, where it's £27. This equates to about $43 at current rates. hmm

Re: Beatles Apreciation Thread

Always loved them and as I mentioned before I saw them twice at Shea Stadium. My first real interest in music. Those were the days and in their later years they were brilliant I thought. I actually prefer their older stuff....Abbey Road, Helter Skelter, etc
