Re: movie appreciation thread...

If I had to pick my all time favourite it would be 'On The Waterfront.'

A few others would include Thief, The Usual Suspects, Once Upon A Time In America and
It's A Wonderful Life.

Directors would be Michael Mann, Frank Capra, Elia Kazan and Coppolla.

The Maltese Falcon
Gentleman Jim
The Outlaw Josey Wales

"Rock ON & Keep the Faith"

Re: movie appreciation thread...

Alfred Hitchcock. Hard to pick a favorite. Vertigo, North by Northwest, Rear Window, to name a few.

Now there's a fellow I can agree with. Totally agree Paul for favorite all time movie with "Heat". De Niro and Pacino playing their best opposite one another. One good and one bad.....well, sort of? wink One of the best action sequences in any movie before or since....the bank robbery gone bad. And an ending that leaves you feeling sorry for both men.

As far as directors, I'd also agree with Michael Man who directed that movie. Always liked the way he's used music and lighting and how he sets up a scene. Martin Scorsese is also at the top of the list. And I'd also include Clint Eastwood with his best picture being "Unforgiven".

Joe is the Best!

Re: movie appreciation thread...

Any film directed by John Ford, Alfred Hitchcock or Orson Welles is worth watching.  Clint Eastwood is an American treasure.  There are so many great films it's hard to pick just one, but one that I've watched repeatedly is Twelve O'Clock High.  Gregory Peck was one FINE actor.
When it was announced last fall that Paul Newman had passed, I was reminded of a quote made by Jack Lemmon when informed Cary Grant had died, Lemmon said, " I thought he'd live forever".

Re: movie appreciation thread...

Hmmm I think loads of films are great but it would be hard to pick one as my favorite so instead I'l mention a TV series which I think is really awesome wink

The Sopranos. I recently watched all 6 series of it over a few months and have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. In fact I was really annoyed when i had watched it all lol. The Sopranos is another HBO production similar to Band of Brothers which I also enjoyed. They seem to do good TV.

It was produced/created by David Chase btw.

Re: movie appreciation thread...

One comes to mind..."Gangs of New York".....'Bill The Butcher'....played by Daniel Day Lewis, one of the greatest actors ever, he's way underated in my opinion

Lenny DeCarpio in "Catch me if you can"...saw it twice this week on TV....how anyone could con peope at the age of 19 is amazing...

Jack Nicholson in any movie, he's the best in the business!!!

Re: movie appreciation thread...

Crossroads,

I'll be checking out those British films and get back with you.  Have you by the way seen the movie, Once?  I think it's from Ireland and the film won a bunch of awards, including an Academy Award for Best Soundtrack.  It stars Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova of Swell Season and is a magical film.  I highly recommend it to anyone who loves music.
Another great movie with an outstanding soundtrack is Elizabethtown.

Re: movie appreciation thread...

Having been there and done that...partial to "The Comittments"...

Re: movie appreciation thread...

I forgot about The Commitments - outstanding film and soundtrack.  I wore out my first cd.  Talking about musical films, I really loved the bio pics about Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens.  Crazy Gary Busey shoulda won an Oscar imo.
