Topic: Thunder Split Up

One of Britain’s best loved rock bands decide to call it a day…but you’ll get one last chance to see them on tour.

On the year that Thunder celebrate their 20th Anniversary as a band, Classic Rock is saddened to hear that the band have decided to split up. A statement says:

Dear All

As we enter Thunder’s 20th anniversary year, we’ve found ourselves becoming increasingly busy with our various activities outside of the band, and we’ve come to the conclusion that there are simply not enough hours in the day to fit it all in. Having discussed it at length, we’ve decided that this is a fitting time for us to hitch up our wagons and ride into the sunset. We’ve therefore decided to give you advance notice that we intend to cease all recording and touring activity, as of the summer of 2009.

In practical terms, this means that we will cease to be a band as of the summer, but until then it will be more or less business as usual. The 2008 Xmas Show CDs will be released as promised, and the previously announced shows in Europe (February) and Japan (April) will go ahead as planned. We will use these shows, as well as any festival slots we can secure, to make the most of the time left, and say our goodbyes to you.

With that in mind, despite only touring a couple of months ago, we couldn’t make our exit without saying goodbye to UK fans, so we’ve arranged a final UK tour, which will take place in early July. The dates are as follows:-

03/07 - Manchester Academy
04/07 - Sheffield City Hall
05/07 - Cambridge Corn Exchange
07/07 - Newcastle City Hall
08/07 - Nottingham Rock City
10/07 - Wolverhampton Civic Hall
11/07 - London Shepherds Bush Empire

Tickets will be on sale as of Friday 30th January.

We’ve played loads of fantastic shows over the last 20 years, but we want all the shows between now and when we go to be the best we’ve ever done. We really hope you’ll want to be there to help us to do that.

Thanks,

Thunder

Thunder frontman Danny Bowes told Classic Rock: “I was pretty much fried at the end of last year, and I came to the conclusion I can’t continue to sing in the band, run the label, manage the band, the online shop, oversee the website, and work as an agent.”

Thunder formed in 1989 and have released 9 studio albums. The band have split once before in 2000 before returning to the fold in 2002.

From Classic Rock Magazine

A truly sad day for me as I never got over to England to see them live.

When I was a child I spoke as a child, But all I heard was how I should get ahead,
Now growing up it ain't anything but all This indecision with these debts and doubts
And worries hanging over my head. When I was a child I spoke as a child,
I wish I could remember what I said.

Re: Thunder Split Up

This absolutely tragic news. Tragic. The guys have worked so hard in recent years after their reformation to bring the band back to the very top, certainly of the UK Rock scene.

The last 3 albums have been superb, with fabulous writing and playing. From Danny's comments its clear that it has all got a bit much. Being free of a major label has its pro's but it is still a lot of hard work.

I have had the benefit of seeing them many times and I have been counting the days until Hannover on the 20th Feb. But I shan't treat it as a wake. I'm going with my own bandmates and I can tell u it will be an evening of celebration of a brilliant band. I'd better hire a driver - no way am I getting behind the wheel afterwards........

If I know these guys there will be renunions for Xmas and special festivals and the like. I don't hear the fat lady singing so it ain't over yet. But for now, Hell, I'm gonna miss 'em! sad

Reverend Paul

this is an even bigger tragedy! If you can't be here for the tour then you will be with us in spirit on the night (lots of spirit probably smile). Hopefully we can get some good photos and share our own personal version of "Thunder's Last Stand" with you.

Re: Thunder Split Up

Wow.

I'd heard bits and pieces throughout the day at work, some snippets of news here and there. I didn't think it was quite this big though! I'm gutted I won't be able to go see them now.
