Topic: roy buchanan

Well this is a spinoff of the tele greats thread.  i absolutely loved the links to his music in there, and now my question is where to start with him.  I'd like to get a few albums, preferably live, any suggestions?

Re: roy buchanan

A perfect starter kit would be Sweet Dreams The Anthology which I have. It's a double disc collection with 26 tracks, 6 of which are live. The material is in chronological order dating from 1969 to 1978. It's a great collection, but there is much more out there. A tragic lose to the guitar world of a very troubled man, the best version of Hey Joe I've ever heard.

What is success? Is it do yo' own thang, or is it to join the rest?   -Allen Toussaint

I second that suggestion.  A place to start with Roy "...you're all fired..." Buchanan

Re: roy buchanan

I would go for - Live in Japan- first, released again in 2003. According to Roy himself his best live recording ever on LP now CD.

A rare CD is; -You're not alone- ,the only CD where he plays a Gibson les Paul instead  of a Fender Telecaster.

I have a brilliant compilation CD from the serie -Guitar Heroes -from Zounds , with the best digitally remastered quality you can get. You could buy it from the German magazine Audio. It's from 2000. If it is not available anymore, what I think,
I can make you a copy.

A good one too is; Roy Buchanan live from Charlies Blues Legends Live vol. 9.

Good luck!

Hallo Gunter

Ridiculous those prices! It was around 15 Euros then  if I remember well.

Same Guitar Heroes serie I've  got: Jeff Beck, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Stan Webb and Frank Marino.

Re: roy buchanan

A great place to start is with his first 2 albums, "Roy Buchanan" & "Second Album" , also check out "You're Not Alone" , some great spacey stuff on that one, completly different from anything he ever did. With some jaw dropping guitar work.

Re: roy buchanan

Wow I wish I could get my hands on a copy of You're not alone. Used to have the album back in the day.  Really different from any other Roy. Me, always loved the Live stock disc.

Take care everyone. And if I don't meet you no more in this world
Then ill, I'll meet you in the next one and don't be late, don't be late

Re: roy buchanan

Yeah, I own several but if I only had one (my desert island collection) it would be "When a guitar plays the blues".  The tiltle track, Chicago Smokeshop, Mrs. Pressure and A Nickle and a Nail are all classics. Other Roy classics are "The Messiah will come again" and his version of Jimi Hendrix's "Hey Joe". For Live albums, I own "American Axe" and it's pretty good.

Major Tom to ground control...

Re: roy buchanan

I have gotten Sweet Dreams, and also American Axe: Live in 1974.  both are very good thus far.

I would also like to hear you're not alone if it is spacey/different, but i should be able to find it on soulseek sooner or later.
