Topic: Hendrix & Arthur Lee

Last year I came across the song "The Everlasting First", by Arthur Lee's group Love, that featured Jimi Hendrix, and would like anyone's thoughts on that song.  It's not a polished recording, but Jimi's playing and Arthur's vocals  are actually quite good.  I'm assuming the song was recorded shortly before Jimi's passing - the two together makes me wonder what magic we missed out on.

Fill me in Scott. Never heard of Love.

Take care everyone. And if I don't meet you no more in this world
Then ill, I'll meet you in the next one and don't be late, don't be late

Apparently, a whole album was recorded with Arthur Lee and Jimi, but the tapes somehow got lost. Hendrix’s first known appearance on a record release was a song written by Arthur Lee. The song was called ‘My Diary’ and it was performed by Rosa Lee Brooks. Jimi played guitar. The song can be found on various bootlegs.

As for Love, they were the first rock band signed by Elektra Records, ahead of The Doors, and their third album 'Forever Changes' is frequently ranked as one of the greatest albums of all time. Rolling Stone magazine ranked Forever Changes 40th in its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time in the December 11, 2003 issue. NME rated Forever Changes #6 on their list of greatest albums of all time. In 1998 Q magazine readers voted Forever Changes the 82nd greatest album of all time. The album was also praised by the British Parliament in 2002 as being one of the Greatest Albums of All Time. Robert Plant of Zeppelin has frequently cited it as being one of his favorite albums, and has performed Love songs frequently live.

Don't expect guitar heavy freakouts on this one, but it does have a sound unlike few others.

The band's greatest hit was 1966's "7 and 7 Is" which reached #33 on Billboard's Top 40 Singles Charts.  Described as "proto-punk", it was later covered by numerous bands, most notably the Ramones, Alice Cooper, and Rush.

Thanks Fletcher for providing this song for the forum.  I was trying to get someone famous to cover this song and hope someday he will.

Thanks again to Keith for the scoop about the collaboration - I wonder if the tapes will one day surface.  Love was pretty big in the late Sixties and Forever Changes still sounds good to me to this day.

I'm truly amazed, oh great guitar pimp. Never heard of Love!? I hadn't listened for decades till I saw this topic - took me back to the early days of hippie-dom - sounds kind of dated now, to be honest.

RIP Iron Man

Sorry George, only one person can refer to me as the pimp. And we both know who that is.
