Topic: Beatles Apreciation Thread

In another Topic Nick was pleasently surprised by the link to the Beatles on the rooftop in London. He had never seen it before and thought the Beatles were just the snippets seen from the Ed Sullivan show.

To me the Beatles are the most influential artists of modern music. Of course that point can be argued but they influenced all music not just a genre' of music.

The Ed Sullivan Show was all we had. My love of music dates back to those appearances. My first album I bought with my own money was Something New which was an American release. The White Album and Sgt Peppers were the most anticipated albums of my lifetime. Talk about taking chances.

I was raised on the Beatles discovered the Blues but the standard of Popular music is Lennon and McCartney.

Re: Beatles Apreciation Thread

The Beatles were the first band that I ever knew of. I really can't put into words how I feel about them.

I grew up with them as my dad and brother have always been enormous fans. I watched the movie "Help!" every day and the image of Ringo and that huge red ring is burned into my mind forever.

I will never turn down a chance to listen to a good Beatles album (they are ALL good).

My favorite Beatles song... well it's impossible to say, but it's got to be among these:

Blackbird
Hey Jude
Let It Be (yes it is a tad overplayed but it's still a GREAT song)
While My Guitar Gently Weeps (with EC)
Something
.........

I saw Paul in 04 or 05... can't remember but I can remember how great it was. Just an amazing musician.

I love George and I'm sad that I never got to see him. Great guitarist and I think one that is under rated. He was not as flashy as some but he got the job done very well.

Re: Beatles Apreciation Thread

Thanks Jim for starting this thread.  My first album bought with my own money was the soundtrack to A Hard Day's Night.  My older brother introduced me to the Beatles in either late December 1963 or early January '64 (I was a little kid so the date's a little  fuzzy) using his Christmas presents; a Japanese transister radio and a little tape player.  At night he would listen to radio stations in Chicago or New York and record something if the DJ hyped up the band.  One night the band was the Beatles and the rest is history.  I've got nearly three hundred of their songs on my iPod and still listen to THE band of my generation when the mood hits me.
My Top Ten?  It's almost like picking a favorite among your children, but I'll try.  In no particular order: Golden Slumbers, Revolution, In My Life (My favorite and one for my last send-off), No Reply, Come Together, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Cry Baby Cry, If I Fell, You've Got To Hide Your Love Away and Nowhere Man.

Re: Beatles Apreciation Thread

my favorite beatles song is dear prudence.  it is one of my favorite songs ever by anyone.  beyond that i respect their influence but just have never been able to get that into the band.

Re: Beatles Apreciation Thread

Probably the first band that ever really made me take notice of music...I've said it on here before, my favorite ever!....the reunion that should have happened, if only for one night....7 short years, they may have set record sales of unreal numbers...sad

Re: Beatles Apreciation Thread

I still remember that night on Ed Sullivan and the buzz at school the next day, 5th grade, 1963. Favorites? they're all favorites, but I must admit that Paul's compositions didn't move me like many of John & George's. Norwegian Wood, Day Tripper, If I Needed Someone, Here Comes The Sun(still chokes me up like the day George passed and they played it on the radio), I Feel Fine, Girl, She Said, and on and on and on. There's the Beatles and then there's everybody else.

I was at school on Merseyside when that seminal moment hit me - who the.....? what the .....?, Then I skipped off school and regularly went down to the Cavern for the lunchtime sessions. Small steamy, sweaty, smelly, noisy.... it was new, it was vibrant it set me on my path into life. The next moment like that came just two years ago.... I switched on the car radio half way through a tune that blew my socks off, the program was the Paul Jones show, the tune was from an album called You and Me and the artist......? Just like the Beatle, the rest is history - Thank you John Paul George Ringo and of course George Martin who was instrumental in the editing - Oh yes, and thank you Joe!

Geoff,

You are a very lucky man to have been there at the Cavern. We lived right on Heathrow Airport London during the madness - in fact my house was demolished to build terminal 5. My sister used to skive off school with her mates and see them arrive and depart from the airport. Lots of big rows about that - my mum was a teacher at my sister's school !.

I managed to meet Paul McCartney only when he had formed Wings, nice guy,he got one of his staff to give me two free tickets four rows back and dead centre. Whilst I am embarrasing myself, I gave linda McCartney a 'Peace' sign when she was on stage (about 20 feet away) and she smiled and gave me one back .I was only a young teenager.

You are dead right about George Martin. His classical influence had a massive impact on the studio albums after they quit the road.

As a bassman I've got to go with 'Come Together' which has a great bass riff which I use as a warm up/ sound check and is instantly recognised in a positive way by punters.I suppose my very favourite track is Get Back , a great rock track and has Billy Preston guesting on keys, amazing. Don't get me started I could write all day on this thread.

WHEN will they release 'Live at The Hollywood Bowl' on CD ? You know , the one with the two tickets on the front cover .Macca's against it,too much crowd noise, so little hope.

Crossroads, play "I Saw Here Standing There"
There's a bass line with some elvis/motowm/r&b on it.

Thank you very much.

Re: Beatles Apreciation Thread

I was tainted throughout my childhood by having Beatles and Grateful Dead shoved down my throat, so I grew up resenting them. I always admitted they had good music, but where I grew up there was the classic rock station, or the pop station. The classic rock station was ok, but the overplayed beatles and dead... the equivalent of Nickelback and Hinder today!

I can still be saved, but I don't think I'll ever have beatle cd's or posters.

Re: Beatles Apreciation Thread

My first real exposure to the Beatles didn't come until Rubber Soul, which was released when I was 10 years old. My uncle had a copy of it and played it on one of those long console stereos. It had the turntable in a center compartment that pulled out like a desk drawer, with wooden doors that closed in front of it. A tan colored fabric covered the speakers on either end.

I was already fascinated by the sound of bass guitar at that time, and discovered if I rested the side of my head on top of the stereo, with my ear against the wood, I could hear and feel the bass. I would sit for hours listening to Rubber Soul.

I've remained a big fan through the years. One of my favorite albums is the 2003 release, Let It Be... Naked. As noted by Wikipedia it's a remixed and remastered version of the original 1970 session tapes, lacking the orchestral embellishments and overdubs added by Phil Spector.

Re: Beatles Apreciation Thread

Stu - didn't know there's a Spector-extractor version of Let It Be.  Will have to check that out.  Speaking of Phil, is he in the joint or did he pull a Robert Blake?  Anyone?

Re: Beatles Apreciation Thread

Jim, thanks for starting this thread. The best band in the world....ever!!....past, present and quite probably future: The Beatles. I still listen in awe at their musicianship, from the early stuff to the latter days. If ever a band has proven that the whole was greater than the individuals that made it...this is it. I'm a huge admirer of George Harrison in particular, on a number of levels, not just musical, and sometimes as individuals they were found wanting musically....but I have to say that as a band there was none finer. The music has always sounded as current and vibrant as it did from way back when. I love 'em, more than any other, and I make no apology for that.

Or maybe I'm just an old comudgeon wink

Here's a classic clip:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=0I91CFOCp … re=related

The Rickenbacker freak that lives within me just loves John's 1958 Model 325.  Paul's playing his Hofner bass. Can anyone ID George's axe? It looks like a Gretch. I think this is way before they got their Epi Casinos. Just once before I check out I'd love to see Joe pick up a Rick...

WRT the fans:  can we expect a similar reaction from some forum members on the evening of May 4th? LOL!

Enjoy!

Re: Beatles Apreciation Thread

So many great songs! and as Jim pointed out, far reaching influences that changed the musical climate.
Hard to pick favorites, but off the top of my head:
In My Life (which my 25 year old daughter is having played at her wedding)
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
If I Fell
I've just seen a face
You Can't Do That
Old Brown Shoe
She's Leaving Home
Oh Darling...oh crap, the entire Abbey Road LP
etc., etc.
