Topic: Saying Goodbye to the Blues

I laid in my bed last night, unable to sleep.  I was excited for the new day, the new change, but then I thought about the musical genre that has fueled me for so many years, and my disappointment in it.  I have felt disappointed by the blues for the last 5 years at least.  Both locally and nationally.  I have had to write a lot about the blues for work, before that I worked at a blues club, and was the president of blues society, and I have a friend who plays blues music.

I have decided that I am going to put the genre down now.  In gratitude, and disappointment for what it has become, I am putting it down.

I thinnk that when three men, Magic Slim, Buddy Guy, and BB King pass away, the voices of the blues are so diluted and thinned, that it lacks any sort of coherent sort of strength.

This is not to say that your blues band is not amazing, but it is to say that I have not seen your blues band.

Even the crown prince of the blues, Joe, has become a disappointment in controlled imagery, and over intellectualized music.  On this forum I had someone edit a post because I mentioned the reason for the season having a few too many.  The reference was not graphic, not negative, not anything.  But the idea that 'gotta control the image' of an under 40 guy playing a guitar, is a bit silly.  The music has transformed from something that came from a guy level, to something that is an abstraction in the clouds.  Do not get me wrong, I think Joe is the best guitar player in America, but I think it has become like math, and not art.  At least to watch.  Classical arias, crescendos that are part of longer compositions, have walked away from song format, and have become composition.

BB is done I think.  This might be the final lap of celebration, and joy.  Sitting on a stool, telling stories, hanging out with 10 thousand people a night, and no one minding that the band plays about 40 minutes.  Personally, I think it is fine.  He could read me a chinese take out menu for all I care.

I think now more than ever, Buddy is going to hit the road, and stomp down the walls for a few years.  His health is still good, but aside from that, who knows.  After Junior passed, maybe it changed.

Magic Slim, well, he might be the last ragged edge.

But, I look at what the world is selling me.  What records are being made, and I think that it leads me to despair.  The last thing KWS did with the DVD, GOD THAT SUCKED!!!  That was literally a tour of his poor friends, it felt like.  It was so insulting an patronizing.

I look at Alligator, and Blind Pig, and they stink.

Keb M was on the west wing last night, playing at a fake innaguration.  His music was elevation like, transcendant.

I think the blues are done now.  For me at least.

We are left with pale imitations, copies of copies.  It feels like the touring company of a big broadway show.  I mean I live in a small town in Wisconsin, but the cast of Cats that came here, is not the cast from Broadway, it is not the same group.  They tear down, and go on to the next night.  They do just enough to get to the next show.

I think that the blues are the same way now.  We have guys just sort of getting by.  Playing enough Hendrix, enough SRV, enough Little Walter, enough Magic Sam, just to keep getting themselves on Blues Cruise, or to keep them in good with the Festival circuit.

Blues, you have let me down.  I gotta turn my back on you.

Re: Saying Goodbye to the Blues

Well you dont do the gigs I do thats for sure, I think the current scene is amazing some great up and comings around. If hanker after the founders in anything you will one day be disapointed, things change and go in allsorts of direction. It would be very boring if not.
Your comment about Joe is preached from an Ivory Tower and everyone is entitled to that;)
Since when was Joe the crown prince of Blues? He does do blues but is not his entirity, neither does he claim so (thats what I believe atleast).
I guess your feeling blue. Good time to write a song...

Re: Saying Goodbye to the Blues

Well Dino, you´ve opened another potential 6-pages thread here I guess ... you are a true master when it comes to playing with provocation. You know exactly how to stir up a hornet´s nest. wink

I don´t have too much to say about that topic, apart from the fact that the Blues still never fails to amaze me. No matter if it´s one of the old greats or one of the new great bands (so many of them out there right now) ... it moves me, it makes me cry, but most importantly it touches my soul and lifts me up whenever I hear those familiar sounds. That´s what it´s supposed to do and I´m happy with that - no need for ivory towers.

So what´s your new genre?

Eva

Re: Saying Goodbye to the Blues

Thoughtful Points Dino , But i have to disagree with some , You must Evolve like The Blues Has , It couldn't stay as it was or it would totally die out , There are many artists out there trying to keep the blues alive , not all to our taste but their doing what they believe in and need to be praised for that , And as you stated those 3 giants are to be plauded for their time and effort to the genre which has taken so much slack , But with the new blood their trying to keep that old bloods work alive and once and for all accepted by the mass media and not forgotten as a minority music form.

So as an opinion and were all entitled to our own feelings on the subject , I Believe Blues is at a crossroads itself , Maybe soon being accepted by the media moguls and at awards ceremonies , Which means it doesn't have to be diluted just move in the right true direction as a living breathing art form described thru music , It's multi-layered from all walks of life not just the deep south with an old man sitting on a porch , Why can't it be a modern day superstar , There enough potential artists out there they just gotta step up to plate , So there's hope for The Blues to survive in this day and age , Dino you may be right let's just wait and see , But our Blues needs us , So we must get out there and support if we care enough , I Know like many many thousands around the world "It's My Music" ... I always will look for a new artist coming to town or cd release or try new forms of blues , it doesnt have to be searing guitars to capture my attention .......... Good topic though and i'll be surprised if i'm the only reply

Hate to say it, but maybe you should add "saur" to the end of your nickname, geez what a downer thread and idea....

Re: Saying Goodbye to the Blues

Dino , I like Ragtime, but I'm not going to wish my life away expecting a Scott Joplin revival anytime soon and in years to come pure blues could be the same ~ a curiosity in musical archives.

Until then ,I'll listen to some blues and play some blues and .... Hey...

We have Joe Bonamassa, one of the greats, who still plays a little undiluted BB King etc. last I heard.

No Ordinary Joe

Re: Saying Goodbye to the Blues

The days of the soulful full voiced singer and the RAW emotional powerhouse of backbeat blues from the bottoms with some perfectly placed blues guitar may appear to be over, oh woe...these pretenders going through the motions.

But they are not gone completely, because I live and breathe and I'll Play the Blues For You.

He gets looked at funny by some because he ain't no guitar wanking pretender.  And because he's 55 not 25 he gets rustier, quicker than he should, but in a garage/studio in a backwater somewhere there is gut wrenching, foot stomping, running from the devil, crying out for Jesus, greasy, whiskey, raw primal blues pumped up from the tormented soul of a man that never fit in.

It cannot be packaged.  That will turn some off.

The guts & the soul has been ripped out of all commercial music and vanilla packaged for consumption by the overweight, sugar-addled, ADHD, over stimulated, over medicated, no working, no driving, thumb texting, unwashed heathens.

EDITZ: I forget britches-dragging, underwear showing,   Insert anywhere above.

Pbbbbt.  It's our fault.

ML this is good: "...it doesnt have to be searing guitars to capture my attention..."  Ken was here.  Very tasty player.

If you can turn your back on the blues, see ya.  You never really had 'em.

If you mean what I think you mean, they will not let you rest Dino.  Disappointed is OK.  Discouraged is not.  Ultimatums usually are not.  big_smile  There will be good days and bad.

Re: Saying Goodbye to the Blues

Rolling over and playing dead just because a genre isn't living up to ones expectations is the easy way out. The strong hang in there, even when its at the lowest ebb, through thick or thin. There's a plethora of young(and older) artists who deserve to be promoted, and I for one won't stop until they receive the recognition they deserve. I'm just glad those same artists don't give up because they aren't, that's for sure.

As for what KWS did...How is giving exposure to deserving artists patronizing and insulting? I'm sure those same artists didn't feel insulted when they received their royalty checks.

Re: Saying Goodbye to the Blues

It sounds like the blues needs to be done with you, quite honestly. It must suck to be you, to have expectations and to feel let down....welcome to life. Geez, I hope you don't have or ever have kids....because they are not, nor will ever be perfect, and are known to disappoint their parents from time to time. I would hate to have you for my father and disappoint you and have you turn your back on me.

The Blues you hear today is what it is. Why not just enjoy it, that is what it is meant for.

If you think you know better than todays blues artists, I dare you to get out your guitar and put your money where your mouth (pen and paper) is.

I thought it was great that KWS did that documentary. It gave some focus to a national treasure that we are quickly losing, many of those blues artists have since passed on. Besides, it is a lot better than your documentary DVD about what the blues really is......

~Rhonda (appreciating the artists out there today who do what they do for the blues, for it would be a lot easier to take another genre to earn a living).

Re: Saying Goodbye to the Blues

Jane, I'm dissapointed you defend Kenny and not Joe. I beleive he was talking some smack about the boss.

Oh yes and me because I dared to edit him. I wonder if he get's pissy when Rolling Stone edits his work.

I still need to go with my gut on people. Sometimes first impressions are the most telling.

Re: Saying Goodbye to the Blues

We are happy that Joe is -as he says- not in the blues business. So at least we don´t have to say good bye to him.
And the blues in general doesn´t mind if you turn your back to it: it sounds anyhow the same.

Re: Saying Goodbye to the Blues

I dont understand all and im lazy to translate every word
but i think if you every day only hear the Blues
and dont hear other Musik too ...it gets Boring its normal because there is no realy change or new intressting for your ears
but if you hear other Music too you find the blues in every Music because its a part of Rock ,grunsch
or Metal or whatever ....and then comes a day you are in the mood like to hear the Blues and you hear it with your ears but also with your hart like every musik
so needless to say musik for me is a thing i have to controll for myself not any Artists !
its like the dayli Menu
if you eat every day the same everybody  honk
so Dino im sure you come back when time is come
Hear some new ,why not?  but dont turn your back forever

ps. im not a Blueser but i never would like to miss the Blues at all

Rock on

Re: Saying Goodbye to the Blues

Dino - You pretty much lost me after the KENNY WAYNE SHEPHERD slam.  Patronizing?  I believe Kenny was doing the exact opposite by paying homage to musicians he respects.  You sure your name's not Rip Van Winkle?  Man you need to wake up and hear the roses around you.  I have, and I like what I'm hearing!

Some truths:

Joe Bonamassa needs no defending.
The world does not revolve around one person.  Too often people say they want to make things better, but what they really want is for everyone to do it their way...better or not.
