Re: Greatest Current Strat Player

It's funny the mention about Doyle - yesterday I got some of his music off his Jellycream album.  Particularly like the song "Chasin' the Sun", which reminds me alot of Clapton.  His collaboration with Charlie Sexton in The Arc Angels was some great stuff indeed.

John Mayer in my opinion is a very good Strat player. I've always thought so, but it's been cemented with his recent live cd. Wow, what a player. KWS is a great one as well. Jeff Beck, Clapton, of course, need no discussion. Sonny Landreth = AMAZING. Walter Trout = the shiznit. But since all of these guys have been discussed, I'm going to throw out a guy that always seems to be overlooked: Doyle Bramhall II. Always been one of my favorite players of any guitar, but he's definitely a Strat guy. Oh, and I can't forget Robert Cray either.

Doyle plays Strat that is true. I don't think of him as a guitarist as much as a songwriter and I like his voice. I like Robert Cray too. I love his style. He is one of those you can identify with one or two notes. If anybody mentions Jimmy Vaughan in this thread and I am closing it for real. He plays a Strat too but I have never been a fan of his playing.

Re: Greatest Current Strat Player

Seeing as these people are still alive my votes would have to go for :

Ritchie Blackmore

Jeff Beck

Robin Trower

Eric Johnson

David Gilmour

Buddy Guy

Re: Greatest Current Strat Player

Jeff Beck is the greatest living guitar player in my book.  regardless of what guitar he has in his hands, from a strat to a danelectro.

Re: Greatest Current Strat Player

Ry Cooder..
He deserves to be on the list.. even though his strat is well somewhat south of stock..

Re: Greatest Current Strat Player

Scratching a little gravel here, but can't resist mentioning Clarence White of Telecaster fame.  JB's mention of Ry Cooder started a 70's flashback which reminded me of CW and Gram Parsons.  I'd appreciate it if anyone could share their thoughts about Clarence.

Re: Greatest Current Strat Player

For me it would be one of these guys:

Ritchie Blackmore

Jeff Beck

Buddy Guy

Re: Greatest Current Strat Player

Jeff Beck gets my vote. The guy is a genius with the strat, and is instantly recognisable as being just Jeff Beck.

I like John Mayer, but there's too much Clapton and SRV in his playing a lot of the time (not that thats a bad thing as a rule....just my opinion for what it's worth). My choice in this thread is based on individual sound...which I think JM is still finding! Anyway...here's another couple:-

David Gilmour

I never know what he's gonna play, from mandolin to slide, from Pachuco to Mavis Staples to Stones to Film scores...a brilliant & eclectic musician, songwriter & producer.

When you get "rich & famous" Joe,  maybe you'll get with Ry, "just for grins"...I'll bring the HOTT.

Re: Greatest Current Strat Player

Just for grins YJM deserves some mention. I do not think anybody has held up the Strat as the most god-like of instruments more than Whyngie LOL

I actually saw him sign an Ibanez Jem "Play Fender YJM" LMAO... The owner was not impressed.

Of course I am kidding and just looking for a way to get that story in here but having said that, Whyngie's version of Spanish Castle Magic from Live in Leningrad is still way up on my personal list of Strat performances......

Re: Greatest Current Strat Player

wink   John Mayer

The reason I say JM is the same reason I tell people what faith I am. lol
(1/2 because I believe it, and 1/2 because it aggravates people)

and I'd also like to add that David Gilmour's latest cd sounds like a bunch of Pink Floyd throwbacks that don't really hit it for me... and Kenny Wayne Shepherd has been playing the same songs since 1999 in concert - not a single new song on his current setlist. That makes these two options lose points in my book.
