Topic: Led Zeppelin : "Yes They Are...No Wait, They're Over"

It seems that in the wacky world that is Led Zeppelin these days, even Jimmy Page's manager Peter Mensch can't even keep things straight, as on the same day he first confirmed that yes, the rest of the band, Page, John Paul Jones and drummer Jason Bonham, would indeed be touring and recording with a new vocalist, then stating that the band was over.

First, speaking to Music6, Mensch declared that the band would indeed carry on - if they can find the right singer.

"Jimmy Page has been playing guitar professionally since he was 16 years old. Jimmy Page likes being a musician. That's what he does! He doesn't want to be a race car driver or a solicitor," Mensch told 6Music.

"So they [Page, Jones and drummer Jason Bonham] did the show [at London's O2 Arena in 2007] with Robert Plant; they had a really good time rehearsing, the three of them, before Robert showed up.

"And they decided that if they could find a singer that they thought would fit their bill – whatever their bill was at this stage in their career – that they'd make a record and go on tour.

"John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page enjoy playing with each other, Jason Bonham is a really good drummer so why not? We just need to find a singer," he said.

While rumors of who Plant's replacement will be have included Soundgarden's Chris Cornell, Aerosmith's Steven Tyler, Mensch remained tight-lipped on the issue.

"It's gonna be a long and difficult process," he said. "And we're not soliciting people! So don't call me about it!"

Then later on, talking to Music Radar, Mensch declared the band to be over, stating categorically, "Led Zeppelin are over! If you didn't see them in 2007 [when they played a one-off reunion at London's O2 Arena], you missed them. It's done. I can't be any clearer than that."

"They tried out a few singers, but no one worked out," says Mensch. "That was it. The whole thing is completely over now. There are absolutely no plans for them to continue. Zero. Frankly, I wish everybody would stop talking about it."

Yes: better stopping it altogether than going on with another singer. Led Zep isn´t Led Zep without Robert Plant. And RP seems to be in other spheres these days.

Doesnt mean there wont be a band though just not Led Zep.. I dont see why they would want to start the same band again they are all obviously very talented.. I guess its a bit like Queen I dont see why they want to go over the same songs with a different singer (Paul Rodgers) its cool to do some songs but why not do new material? isnt that why you become a musician in the first place? to expand and do new things?

Correct, I believe this is what he meant by the apparent contradiction.  Not too long ago there was a Rolling Stone interview with Jimmy Page where he said whomever they get on vocals, they're not going to be billing themselves as Led Zeppelin... a very smart move on their part... that made me happy.  smile

By the way, the other day my brother said he thought Ann Wilson would be an excellent choice on vocals... I gotta say I agree with him.  Here, I'll copy & paste what he said to me in an email:

Vik's brother wrote:

My selling point is that she can pull it off and has been singing Zep songs off and on since the 70's. That and the main reason everyone is so against replacing Plant with a Plant clone is that it is cheesy which I agree with totally. I want to hear the new music they have wrote with some Zep songs thrown into the mix too. But if they pick a Plant soundalike guy, all it will end up being is a tribute band more or less. But I think Ann would be accepted more so than a guy would be. She has the vocal range to sing damn near anything they could throw at her, and then when it comes to singing the old Zep tunes she can do it very well without sounding like she is trying to be Plant. Plus she gives me goosebumps when she sings which I like. Some of those notes she can hit just makes every hair stand on end at times. Like Plant does at times to me too like in Kashmir for example. But the press would probably bust on her like they have been doing for the last 15 years about her weight.

I just want to see Jimmy Page start touring again. There's no reason he can't get a great band together and go tour.

Actually it's Queen + Paul Rodgers.  It's a meld between the two artists. And they just released a new album.

Plus their fans want to hear the old songs too.  I want to hear a Free song from Paul Rodgers.   That was part of his life and being a musician.  And there was more to Queen getting together with Paul Rodgers than just filling a vocal spot.  So the Led Zep thing is not like Queen + Paul Rodgers.

Plus Jimmy Page went out on tour with Robert Plant.  Now it's John Paul Jones turn.

It's great to have old and new material.

Hey, if they take Vik's brother's advise and add Annie, maybe they can bill themselves as Led Zepplin + Ann Wilson!

Maybe first, you should learn how to spell Led Zeppelin.

But if you want to learn from the best, Queen + Paul Rodgers, go ahead.

Re: Led Zeppelin : "Yes They Are...No Wait, They're Over"

Paul Rodgers singing with Queen and doing only Queen material reminds me of the 9+ years that Hughie Thomasson played with Lynyrd Skynyrd. I saw him about 8 out of those 9 years and hoped each time they'd break out an Outlaws tune, but all I ever heard was Hughie playin' a couple Outlaw licks between songs as Gary Rossington gave him a cold stare, Hughie just cracked up. Thank God Hughie put the Outlaws back together in '05 and I got to see them one more time before Hughie's untimely passing.

You have never seen Paul Rodgers + Queen, they do not only play Queen Material.  They play Paul Rodgers material also and other music.  The reason for the "+" is that Paul Rodgers is an equal entity with Queen.  I've posted before how and why they got together.  They play old and new material.  And they were not looking for a replacement of Freddie, instead someone to honor the memory of Freddie.

Being that this is a Led Zep thread, I am all for them getting together in some kind of way.

I didn't get the memo from management that you were appointed head of the spelling police.

By the way, in your first sentence, material shouldn't be capitalized.

Nor will I, I've never had the urge to see a Queen show, but I'd go see Paul if the oppurtunity presented itself as long as he was with another backing band than Queen. Maybe Paul Rodgers+Queen would be a better billing. Now before the fur flies If any of you dig Queen that's fine their just not my cup of tea.
