Topic: Tijuana Bible 2/17

Written by Jim Suhler
DALLAS, TX - Blasting out Texas blues/rock for over seventeen years, Jim Suhler & Monkey Beat announce the February 17, 2009, release of the bands new cd, 'TIJUANA BIBLE', which will be released in the U.S. on Underworld Records, distributed nationally by Burnside Distribution. Produced by Jim Suhler and Tom Hambridge, 'TIJUANA BIBLE' is powered by thirteen original songs, plus unique takes on Elvin Biahop's "Drunken Hearted Boy" (with Bishop as a special guest on slide guitar), Rory Gallagher's "I Could've Had Religion" and AC/DC's "Up To My Neck in You". Additional special guests include Joe Bonamassa on lead guitar ("Deep Water Lullaby") and Jimmy Hall (Wet Willie) on backing vocals (Po' Lightnin').

"TIJUANA BIBLE' was recorded at Ocean Way Studios and 1808 Studios in Nasville, as well as Audio Dallas in Garland , Texas. The album takes it's title from the notorious "Tijuana Bible", an old time pornographic comic book, typically "starring" famous politicians, film stars and sports heroes of the day. "No one is really sure where they originated, but Tijuana, with it's creative approach to all things entertaining, is certainly a good place to guess", says Jim Suhler.

Along with Suhler on guitar and lead vocals, the band includes bassist Carton Powell, keyboardist Shawn Phares and drummer Jimmy Morgan. Together, they've ben terrorizing clubs, theaters and festivals alike with their flamethrower brand of blues/rock. with a major side order of the Texas border mythology added to keep it spicy.

The same take-no-prisoners attitude has prevailed in Jim Suhler's playing as a guitarist with George Thorogood and the Destroyers, with whom he's recorded, toured and written songs for over nine years. Suhler has often been included in many of the "Top Ten Guitarists" lists featured in several music publications.

Several of the songs on "TIJUANA BIBLE" are also featured on the 2008 DVD release "REAL TIME: LIVE IN TEXAS", recorded at Dallas' Granada Theater, which also includes bonus tracks filmed at the Kwadendamme Blues Festival in the Netherlands and in the historic Deep Ellum section of Dallas.

I've heard TB and it's excellent start to finish. JS & MB's finest offering to date.

Yes!  I've been wanting a copy of this disc for a long time.  I'll be among the first to get it when it comes out.

Re: Tijuana Bible 2/17

Great album. Even though it has a lot of tracks, it's one of the rare ones, due to the many styles on display, that you can listen to start to finish without skipping any tracks. It doesn't knock you over the head with virtuosity, but by the time it's over you'll be extremely impressed by Suhler's songwriting and guitar skills. HIGHLY recommended, this one.

Also, the DVD referenced here is fantastic, and I would also recommend it without hesitation.

Like Keith said, great album start to finish, not a bad song on it. Great CD for playing in the car on a road trip!

BTW, didn't know "Up To My Neck In You" was a cover of AC/DC. I think you're gonna like it Michael!

Re: Tijuana Bible 2/17

The European label picked it up soon after it was finished. Jim's other most recent release Bad Ju JU was on Lucky 7 and for whatever reason he didn't release it on that label. It took him awhile to find a label for US relasease of this record. It is worth it for Joe's solo alone. My favorite disc is Bad Ju Ju of Jim's but Tijuana Bible is a very good album start to finish. The DVD is good to see the band live if you have never had a chance to. It has a mixture of his previous works such as Shake which is on one of his first Monkey Beat albums my favorite live song he does.

Jim is a good friend of Joe's and is deserving of our support.

Re: Tijuana Bible 2/17

Good straight-rocking album with an extra bonus of Joe playing a high quality solo on "Deep Water Lullaby".

The story goes...

Joe arrived, set up, plugged in, played the solo, unplugged, packed up, visited with Jim, and left....all in about an hour.

Probably not that amazing for someone that has that kind of talent, but it still drops my jaw.

As stated previously, Jim Suhler (& MonkeyBeat) are great guys, good CD, friends and supporters of JB.

Highly recommend Tijuana Bible.

Re: Tijuana Bible 2/17

This is another one I just got. All I can say is "Why did I wait so long?" Tijuana Bible is a fantastic cd. Thought the way he turned the AC/DC song "Up To My Neck In You" into a blues tune.

When I was a child I spoke as a child, But all I heard was how I should get ahead,
Now growing up it ain't anything but all This indecision with these debts and doubts
And worries hanging over my head. When I was a child I spoke as a child,
I wish I could remember what I said.

Thanks for this, Roy! I like it, pity it took me so long to discover it here. What's the story, was this an informal jam you happened to stumble on, or what?

Cathy and I played Tijuana Bible a lot on our little road trip and loved it - some great driving songs - he's so much more than 'just' GT's guitarist, like Nils is so much more than 'just' Bruce's guitarist.  wink

Re: Tijuana Bible 2/17

And it looks as if we could expect a new CD in 2011.

That's what I found on Jim Suhler's website:

New CD! Converse, Suhler, Whittington 'Texas Scratch'
Jim Suhler, Vince Converse and Buddy Whittington just recorded a collaborative CD to be titled "TEXAS SCRATCH" and it will be released in February 2011. Vince is a dynamic guitarist/vocalist from Houston, Texas, Buddy Whittington played 12 years with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers adding guitar and vocals. More details to follow soon.

I hope the CD comes with a tour to Europe and good old Germany.

Re: Tijuana Bible 2/17

I really liked the video you shot, Roy.
Jim plays quite a bit in my neck of the woods but I'm embarrassed to say that I have never seen him in person.
However, I will be correcting that problem soon. He is playing in Dallas at The Kessler on Dec 27th and I plan to be there.
Thanks Blues Sissi for the info on the CD...it would be great if he had advanced copies  wink
