Topic: Playing stereo verses mono how about some input from JB

When I first played stereo years and years ago I thought how cool, but it rquired lugging around more amps than I could fit in my car with the PA system. Just recently after being at a JB show I decided to buy the TC stereo reverb and play through my Vibroking & Matchless Chieftain, WOW the wall of sound and of course the 5 Tone Tubby Speakers all at once just blew me away, so I have ordered road cases and took out the two rear seats that were in my mini van so I can hopefully fit all my gear. Joe can you share some first time stereo memorys or thoughts with us? Sincerely, Big B

Re: Playing stereo verses mono how about some input from JB

Ok, here we go.. first I dont run Stereo in the true sence of the word.  I do run two amps but its really a tone stacking approach rather than stereo. The word stereo as it was explained to me a long time ago by Kevin Shirley, is two little tones panned 180 degrees from each other in order to fool the ear as to think the is sound big and wide..  First Id but a whirlwind or a Lehle A B both switch.  run your two amps through, that then through your TC.  TC reverb is input based device.. you could over load the front end simply by turning your amp past 5 or 6.  The Whirlwind doesnt care.. its a buffered free pass so to speak. (caveate emptor... do not buy a morley product for this application) Having the Fender and Matchless is a good thing.. Make sure your not running them in the same way.. it may fool your ear in the room going Wow!! this sounds massive, when in reality its 1 plus 1 equals 1 if you follow.  Use the Machless for mids. complex mids. almost displeasing to the ear.  then use your Fender to do the top and bottom end.  Now a Vibro King is not going to rattle the walls.. If you really want to shake it up buy a new baffle and grille from mojo music supply. one that fits a 15 inch speaker.  Then call EV and get a 8 ohm EV 15L or try to find a used one online..  with that you will rule the world..Do not buy a Jensen or anything that says Hemp on it.. Hemp cone is just a hippie term for disapointment.. You need a real speaker.  One that doesnt collapse on the bottom end.  My set up is based on that approach only with 3 variables and 100 watts each. Hope this helps..
Some would read this and say I really need to get out more and get a girlfreind..   the some would be right...
good luck

Aye nice bit of info there

Re: Playing stereo verses mono how about some input from JB

I remember back when I ran a 4 X 12 cab wired in stereo using a Mesa Boogie 50/50 power amp and either an ADA MP1 or a Boogie Studio Pre.  I had the cab split 2 x 12 's on the R and 2 x 12's on the L.  It sounded great on stage but  1. Most PA's weren't using stereo outs so the front of house was mono anyway and 2.  Most sound guys wouldn't give me two channels in the board to mic it up in stereo anyway...
Typically I was only getting half my sound out front so what was the point.

I wish I had that cabinet now though.

Before I do say another word;

Hempcone is just a hippie term for disappointment

Joe, please forgive me the steal of that phrase as my new signature.
I will credit it of course. But I share the same opinion about hempcone speakers...:D

As for the "stereo" setup. I run it recently like this.
I use two heads. A Marshall Silver Jubilee 2555 and a Budda Superdrive 30.
The Marshall has the mighty "Marshall bass edge" and good highs but imho ok mids.
I run the dist channel of it. The Budda is set to semi clean with mids on full.
As Joe said, almost unpleasant sounding. But in the sum it makes sense.
The two heads are connected with a Lehle P-split as they both are permanently on.
In front a TS-808 (permanently on) and a TS-clone for lead boost.
I have a 2x12 cab fitted with one EV 12L for the Marshall and a G12H30 heritage for the Budda.
Very compact setup anyway. But very effective for either amp.
And an old Intellifex for reverb and delay stuff in the Marshalls FX loop.

Those things happen if I spend too much time in rehearsal room.
I was once called an anorak by my wife about my gear insanity
Must be true love...LOL

Hi Danny, we have a stage rider that shows the sound guys exactly what we need.
Its part of our contract and if they cannot deliver what we need then it must be cleared
either before the contract is signed to find another solution or they get a kick in the teeth!!

Ok, latter was just kidding but sometimes I have the feeling these guys need
a knock around the head...;) I'm glad we have our own sound guy meanwhile.

Re: Playing stereo verses mono how about some input from JB

Ok.. heres a sure fire way to get around the 2 channel front house shuffle..  again I had this problem with four channels.. so I made a mic cable that linked 3 mics together and one separate..  so in your case just have a 2 to one split made 50/50 and Bobs your uncle as Rick would say..  simple solution.. We still run the 3 to one /1 to 1 split even though I ve had my own house engineer for 4 years..

I think Buddy Guy would disagree about the girl friend thing.

Re: Playing stereo verses mono how about some input from JB

BIGB- I make that same mistake sometimes about pairing amps... it sounds "Stereo" even though scientifically, it's not.
Alex- Better to be called an anorak your wife sometimes, then a "Luddite" here, by your internet buddies- who apparently suffer this same malady... a never ending need to find that tone that's in your own mind.
Joseph, except nothing less than the best- it's important as an artist, to keep a belief inside of yourself- that You can do something new and even better. That perfect babe always seems to find me when I stop looking.
I finally caved in... I thought of many little tone thiefs that would wake up my amplifier... I decided to try something new:  From Blackstar a HT Tube dist pedal.
From what I've learned, this company was formed by a handful of former Marshall employees who had some different ideas that they wanted to try. I have heard some great things about the hand wired tube amps they make, and the pedals. I think this may be the best call for my solid state amp- because of the Hot Tube... They have 3 dist pedals plus a Boost and a Drive. The other two dist pedals are for the heavier stuff.

Re: Playing stereo verses mono how about some input from JB

Thanks Joe and Alex.  This was years ago when I was plaing little bars around Pittsburgh.  I'm sure now that I'm with the Houserockers and doing bigger/better shows with better sound guys if I asked for 2,3 or 4 channels I could get it.  That's whay I'm pursuring a Cat 5

Joe, how well do you think the Cat r and a Fuchs ODS would pair toether?  I know you were using a Fuchs for awhile.  How would you set the amps?
I'm think of leaving the Fuchs on full time as you do the Jubilee and kicking in the Cat 5 for higher gain solo stuff.  Again, what would you do with these two amps>

Thanks

Re: Playing stereo verses mono how about some input from JB

Hi,

well, I think this phrase its a bit unfair to Hempcone speaker in general (but funny!!! lol)
as they sound pretty good in the smaller vintage amps. But I wouldn't use them for rock stuff
were you need some tight bottom end.

Hemp Cones... Warren Haynes seems to like them.  Tone Tubby isnt doing to bad either.
