Topic: Embarrassed to be from Illinois

Good God!
This is a sad day for our country and for my home state.
Our beloved (ha!) governor has sold his soul to the highest bidder.
For anyone that hasn't heard, Rod Blagojevich was arrested and locked up this morning. His biggest sin (among others) was trying to sell the senate seat vacated by President elect Obama to the highest bidder. A SENATE SEAT for god's sake!!! What f***ing planet is this guy from and how stupid, greedy, anti-patriotic do you have to be to do something so heinous.
I hope he rots in jail and then in hell. Today I am embarrassed to be from Illinois.

Re: Embarrassed to be from Illinois

You've got to hand it to him. He even considered appointing himself!! I must be jaded because corruption in politics seems to be the norm. Bill, at least there's a colorful history in that area. Think of all the gangster movies, bootlegging..your own version of the Wild West. Take comfort in the fact that his ego and stupidity did him in....it always does. It's no reflection on the fine citizens of your state. Remember, Spiro Agnew was the Gov'n of Md. once upon a time......         Cathy

Cathy,
I'm starting to think it's something in the water.
Former governor Ryan is currently serving time, which means that 4 of our last 8 governors have been incarcerated.
Not a real good average.

Yeah Bill, you one-upped me. All my ex-Gov did was bring a hooker from NYC down to DC for some fun & games.

Major Tom to ground control...

Re: Embarrassed to be from Illinois

The worst part is that he's back at work today.  Legally, he can and still may appoint himself to the seat.  (The Senate could refuse to seat him.)  He's obviously dumb enough and arrogant enough to try it.

The really sad part is that whomever is now appointed to that seat will have a taint on the appointment because of this scumbag.

Don't feel bad about it being limited to your state though Bill.  As Cathy pointed out Spiro Agnew was once my County Executive and Governor.  Another former Governor, Marvin Mandel, was convicted of taking bribes, although it was later overturned.  Not to mention all the fun that is Louisiana politics.

Just proves the old adage that power corrups and absolute power corrupts absoloutely.

Escape To Wisconsin

When I was a child I spoke as a child, But all I heard was how I should get ahead,
Now growing up it ain't anything but all This indecision with these debts and doubts
And worries hanging over my head. When I was a child I spoke as a child,
I wish I could remember what I said.

Re: Embarrassed to be from Illinois

Four out of the last eight governors jailed is a pretty unenviable record Bill, but I can't image that anyone with a brain would go on to draw any conclusions about the state of Illinois as a whole or about its citizens from that fact.

What 'Europeans' probably find strangest is that this guy seems to be able to keep some or all of his powers despite being in jail. (At this point we should maybe remind ourselves that even politicians are presumed innocent till proven guilty!)

Re: Embarrassed to be from Illinois

If anyone wants a laugh, go on e-bay and look up "senate seat".
I joked yesterday that Blago did everything except post it on e-bay...and lo and behold, there are at least 29 "illinois senate seats" for sale there.
Tongue in cheek sales.
