If I Could Vida actually sounds pretty cool...

I like the Youtube video that had cold plays video and then they had a live joe video and then had them both playing at the same time and it was dead on.  It wasn't a mistake in my opinion.  They ripped that one off.

Gotta say, Thats very close and Joe should get writing credit and money.  Accidental or not.. It be like me stealing the melody to "My Way" and calling it my own then saying it was a accident.. As a songwriter you are responsible for policing yourself..  Strange times in music really..

Re: Coldplay rips off Satriani, Satch is suing for plagiarism

I had no idea before I read this link that this all started as a result of fans writing to Satriani, there is something to be said for the fans of their favorite guitar gods! smile Its so obvious, hopefully not totally deliberate and Coldplay surely doesn't need the $$$...I would think Coldplay would want to settle out of court, even if it wasn't intentional, but on the other hand, sometimes when you settle out of court, others assume your guilty...so since they can afford legal fees, Coldplay's best way to save face is an unintentional plagarism ruling and pay up, it should be interesting!

The arrangement does change in the Coldplay song, but the similarities are unavoidable.
PLUS, it's not like Coldplay cannot afford a remedy - this song was HUGE.

I have a thing for the law and all the ways it can be twisted and turned.  This was posted by a Clapton fan from Bob Lefsetz.  When I first heard this Coldplay story, I thought about George's suit, so unintentional...

the Bob Lefsetz view:

"If George Harrison can go to court and lose, what makes Chris Martin and his team think they can win this one? Especially with YouTube on Satriani's side?

It's like sampling. Clear the license. Pay the man. Coldplay could have paid Satriani and the world wouldn't be the wiser. How many people know the original anyway?

Somebody in Coldplay heard it. That's what you need to prove liability. Access. If Satriani was a guy working in an amp repair shop in Cincinnati, Coldplay would have a leg to stand on. But he's a guitar geek's guitar hero. Along with Eric Johnson and the rest of the shredders the mainstream is unaware of but the maestros salivate over. Coldplay absolutely can't win this case. Or even if they possibly could, their image has already been shredded.

Watch this video...

I'll admit, when wind of this story first started blowing through my inbox I took it with a grain of salt. Isn't everybody claiming they're being ripped off? Then I watched the video, and I cracked up. IT'S THE SAME DAMN SONG!

Now Coldplay paid Kraftwerk when they took that band's riff on their previous album, why not pay Satriani here?

This is not a monetary issue, this is a public relations issue. This is how Tom Cruise got in trouble. He's a twit who had an incredible PR person. But then he fired her and now we know Tom Cruise is an adolescent with behavior problems and his career has been irreparably harmed. I don't know how you control this story at this point. But Coldplay needs to hire a strategist. This is the biggest music story on the Web right now. Chris Martin's image was already inches above the toilet. Do I think that Coldplay INTENTIONALLY ripped off Satriani? No. But that's not how the law works. Give Joe a piece of the action. I'd say to even invite him up on stage to play his part. But that'll just let the Coldplay fans without Internet access in on this crime."

Its horrible music isn't it. Hope he leaves them destitute!

Plagiarism in music well i think this will rave on for years. remember Led Zeppelin Dazed and Confused was spotted as a plagiarizing of Jake Holmes's I'm Confused, (Whole Lotta Love Willie Dixon,) ( The Lemon Song Howl'in Wolf's Killing Floor), Zeppelin got hammer for lyric content not for guitar riffs just though I let you no.
Bye the way if you play Jethro Tull's We Used To Know Off the Stand Up album, then play the Eagles Hotel California track, well if that's not a melody rip off I'm a monkey's uncle, i wonder if Ian Anderson took the Eagles to town over this.

Re: Coldplay rips off Satriani, Satch is suing for plagiarism

I am not a fan of Coldplay or Satriani, but I kinda dig the Satriani tune...a clear copy to me whether intentional or not.

Re: Coldplay rips off Satriani, Satch is suing for plagiarism

From what I read, fans wrote to Satch telling him he was ripped off. Satch didn't want a lawsuit, from what I heard...he tried contacting Coldplay to just see what the deal was. Coldplay totally ignored the communication attempts. Probably hoping he would just go away.

Re: Coldplay rips off Satriani, Satch is suing for plagiarism

From what I was understanding from interviews when this album came out off radio etc, the band said they did take from other peoples works, however they are adament that this was not one of them... You cant claim progressions as your property but melodies could be another story... Personally I dont think Coldplay copied as most of the people who play instruments here know you could pick up a melody line simply from hearing someone whistle or hum a tune, and with out knowing it its in your head.. But as Joe said they are responsible for policing it. Eventually though theres gonna be a point when songs will sound the same theres no escaping it...

Somet has to be said for the publicity this has caused though, Satriani isnt really a mainstream name like Coldplay I think perhaps he has picked up alot more fans after this story took off, I'd like to see the figures...

Btw I aint a Coldplay fan in fact I dont think I've persoanlly listened to them since Yellow..
