So in my thinking leaving it strung with tension in the rod is a bit like keeping a tennis racket in a press. But I'd consider restringing at least every 6 months. Continually tuning up to 440 will eventually harden the strings and put more tension in them imho.

That's a really good way of putting it Pete. I don't know how important it is to change strings if it's left in the case though. I have a guitar that I've been storing in it's case for a friend. It's been in storage for just over 3 years now. I take it out every couple of months to check the tuning and action and then it goes back into the case. No problems whatsoever with the original unplayed strings.
When played, strings lose their elasticity over time so if you're going to play the instrument for weeks at a time then it's definitely better to store it for long periods with fresh strings.
