Re: Biggest music egos?

Well....I'd have to side with JC Fogerty on the band-name thing...the man WAS the lead singer, guitar player, piano player, harp player, horn player, producer of the albums and solo writer of the all the songs.  It'd be rather insane for the other guys to be able to use the CCR moniker.

You have a similar situation with The Little River Band right now...the lead singer and two other members who wrote and sang all the hits don't have the rights to the LRB name...there's like one dude left from the orginal band and he travels around with a sham group of guys.

Technically Lynyrd Skynyrd shouldn't be able to use their name either. Ronnie Van Zant's widow specified that there had to be three original members in the band for them to use the name and they're down to two since the bass player passed away. Apparently she's not being too hardarsed about it or they worked something out legally and financially.

I'm not really sure this entire topic should fall into the "ego" category. This has little to do with Fogerty thinking he's  great or not....more to do with serious life issues of brotherly rivalry and money lost.

Maybe we should talk about how Henley and Frey have totally excluded Don Felder from all things Eagles-related!  LOL

Really, I never heard that story....I've heard JF stopped Stu Cook and company from using the name CCR on there reunion tour years back because JF said he WAS CCR!! and without him, they were no bodies....I believe he sued to make them change their name to "Creedence Clearwater Revisited"...well I saw them at a small club out side of Sactown and the were terrible!...so maybe John had some validity to his claim...the dude playing lead and singing vocals and was awful!!... Creedence Clearwater Revival...the pride of El Cerrito, CA. ( thats Jdawgs backyard)

Well said!
When and if you think you can play and/or sing it takes guts and a healthy ego to stand and deliver.  It takes humility AND maturity to realize how fortunate it is that somebody likes it.

Yeah get lost in the music/art and the emotion it delivers...GOOD.  Make them feel something and they'll be back.  Get lost in the hype and the image pbbbbt and you have just another jerk kidding themselves.

My friend (first chair trumpet) in a lot of big bands and I were talking at the school he now runs and we had an interesting discussion about real musicians who are unsung heros.  They can read anything and can deliver at short notice anything from Motown to Vegas in a show band.  Anything from Four Tops to Tom Jones to Frank Sinatra.

The public does not know their names.  Interesting huh?

You guys forgot about the obvious one...me.  Clearly.

And as far as Kanye West goes, I did not get it at first, and hated him.  But now I understand.  And I am a huge fan.  Giant giant giant fan.

I think he might be one of the few dudes who I am that big of a fan of.

Re: Biggest music egos?

Fogerty is the man. He WAS CCR. Nuff said. If they don't like it they can go do Creedence Clearwater Revisited.

Re: Biggest music egos?

Several years ago I saw an interview that was done with the ex members and it was for certain a situation of ongoing hostility. Aside from the breakup of the band there was apparently a scenerio where the band members were completely taken to the cleaners by either the record label , their management or possibly both. Things emerged in this interview about how they were told they owned houses, apartments , nice cars etc and it turned out they actually owned nothing, it was all a lie and it was all actually rented. I believe they were also told that their money was being banked in the islands and also invested for them and this all later turned out to be gone. In the end they had nothing.
Penthouse paupers for real  !!
When asked if they'd ever get together again with Fogerty the answer was 'Only in Valhalla, and even thats not likely "

Re: Biggest music egos?

Has anyone else here ever seen the actual film footage of that concert where Axel Rose's onstage tantrum and assault of an audience member started a major riot ? freakin incredible. The whole place went total bedlam with the audience waging war on the band. They actually tore the chairs loose and used them for material to throw at the stage. At one point someone from security got the idea to get water hoses and use them against the audience, which just totally inflamed the people to yet another level . The dvd ive got of this concert has footage that was shot by people onstage from the perspective of being in the position of those who were under attack. Its total crazy seeing all the objects flying through the air coming right at the people doing the filming !! The whole stage was piled many feet deep with the various debri that was thrown. I think the band was very , very lucky to escape alive.

You pale in comparison to Kanye Dino. Your taste in music never ceases to amaze me. I do beleive Kanye is a homeboy here since his mothers funeral was in OKC. Not sure about his bio but from all I have seen of him his ego is only exceeded by his self image. Again I quote my wise old grandfather. Re: Biggest music egos?

Heres the thing with that Elvis quote or whatever it was...when Elvis started, he wanted to be great.  He wanted to measure himself againsst greaetness

They all do.  You have to want to be mythic is scale, or there is no point.  You have to seek greatness, because that is where the edge is.

I cannot tell you how many dudes in SRV hats I have seen who just sort of want to play a little and blah blah blah

Screw those guys.

I want the crazy YOUCANTSAYTHATHERE who is playing his blood.

I think Kanye was talking about wanting people to look back on him, and see him as great.  And we cant do that now.  We could not do that at the time with Elvis.

Artists should want to write the myths each and every night, to be larger.

Otherwise, they are just dudes who gotta get up early for work on monday.

Dare to be brilliant I say.  Dare to stand there in your own brilliance and say your GOING FOR BRILLIANCE.

Go for brilliance.

Re: Biggest music egos?

I'll break it down to a sports analagy. Say it on the field. Show it on the stage. If you are worthy of adolation it will be shown to you. Just because your willing to say your great or going to be considered great doesn't mean you are.

There is a local guy here that is a legend in his own mind. He will tell you about his gift as long as you will listen. That doesn't make him great. If I thought he was the greatest act in the city that wouldn't make him great either.
The reality is the only thing he is good at is talking about himself.

I'll give you Prince is a talent and one weird dude. But prince showed us what he had before he be cam egocentric. Kanye is arrogant but from what I've seen his talent is all talk  and no substance.

Artists should want to create.  That is where they should take their brillance from.

There are plenty of artists who are very humble who are brilliant.  Paul Rodgers for example.  He is such a nice guy and treats people with humbleness and respect.  He is all about his art and not his ego and that is what I love about him.  Brian May, guitarist in Queen, he has a PHD in Astrophysics.  He also is a very nice person who doesn't have to sing his praises about himself.  Joe Bonamassa, who is so giving to his fans and a very humble person.
There are plenty of others.  These are people you would want to be around.

Kanye West getting bent all out of shape since he doesn't win a Grammy.  And then he has to declare himself the voice of his generation.  Nobody else declared him that, just him.  He sounds more like a voice of desperation.
How did he like his generations voices saying "Kanye Sucks" at Bonnaroo after the 2 hour delay.  He probably didn't care because his ego keeps telling him how great he is.

And I have some stories about Prince.

I'll give you one.  This was along time ago.  His people have the nerve to tell this certain artist that are sitting behind him at the American Music Awards to keep there hands to themselves.  They shouldn't speak to him or touch him.  If Prince was that contaminated maybe they should have put him under quarantine.

"Holy Toledo"  -  Bill King   "Just Win Baby" - Al Davis  "The Autumn Wind" - Steve Sabol

Re: Biggest music egos?

I think you are missing that these artists are never off stage in 2008.   Every moment is onstage, its not like years ago, when backstage existed, and no one saw it, but we see backstage everywhere.

Re: Biggest music egos?

I once heard that the Goo Goo Dolls were booed off the stage opening for Extreme back in the day.  LOL!

kanye west actually said he was the voice of this generation of this decade.  he has proven it is possible to do both.  you can make shitty music and speak incoherently at the same time.

Maybe I'll throw Elvis the pelvis under the bus...after watching the history channel on the 70s, it all came back to me what a wacko he was....he wanted to be an under cover snitch for Nixon...screamed about the Beatles and hippies being corruptive to the youth of america...he was particularly harsh on the drug element and it's culture...come on "Pelvis", you died with 10 different drugs in your system...hypocrite!!!!!

Re: Biggest music egos?

Thats so funny that you just said that about Elvis's opinion about the Beatle's. In the articles about Paul McCartney's recent concert in Israel it was rehashed that the Beatles had originaly and till now, been banned from playing there because it was thought that it would be a corrupting influence on Jewish youth. That same story had also been maintained on McCartneys own site until recently. The story has now been changed in the media that this was all nonsense and that the real problem was some sort of issue between promotors. Funny that Paul would have been that ignorant of the situation till just recently. So are we to believe that it was just an issue with venues and promotors that kept the band and its various members from playing there for 30 +++ years ?
