Re: Cadillac Records, a major motion picture about blues

I saw a bit of Mos Def as Howlin' Wolf on TV. (I can't youtube). I'm psyched for this one!!! What's the release date?  Thanks, Cathy

Re: Cadillac Records, a major motion picture about blues

I thought the last memorable Beyonce screen moment would be in Austin Powers. Looks like this might be it. Etta James and Joe will be sharing a stage this spring.

He's actually playing Chuck Berry. I'm so stoked for this movie. Anything that brings hype to the blues and I'm all over it!

I'm glad to see this is coming out, it could be a good way of people getting to know blues music better (assuming there is more than jazz trumpets to listen too).

Thanks Deezer..and..Jim, Etta James is ailing...She was to be on the Blues Cruise in January, but had to cancel. I really hope all goes well and Joe gets to play with her.    Cathy

Jim:

Where/when are Joe and Etta to be sharing a stage?????

She is absolutely awesome and her life story is intriguing.  Ironically, she lost close to two hundred pounds with the help of gastric bypass surgery, and has been in poor health ever since.  Much like BB King, she sits on a stool for her performances, but I think her voice is still outstanding.

I had the opportunity to see her in April in Harrisburg, PA from a front-row center seat and to get her autograph after the show.  God willing, her health will improve.  I urge everyone to see her live while she's still with us, and I can't think of a better show than Joe and Etta.

The movie ought to be outstanding too.

I think B.B.'s problems are more to do with arthritis in his knees, if I'm not mistaken. Could be wrong though. The good thing with B.B., is that he's done so well financially that he can afford the best care and still be on the road. From what I understand, despite his diabetes, B.B.'s in excellent health.

Tucson Arizona March 18th it is on Pollstar. I saw her about 4 years ago. Even though she was seated she put on a great show. Great band. Michael Finigan was in the Roots band at the time. Not sure if he will be with her this time. He has been out with Joe Cocker for awhile.

Re: Cadillac Records, a major motion picture about blues

You are correct about the arthritic knees.  I must say though that during his shows in recent years, his guitar and vocal solos have been very limited.  I am very glad that I've gotten the opportunity to see him live, although I wish that I had gotten to see him live in his prime.  (That's part of what's so special about Joe; the best is still yet to come.)

Etta James is still a vocal force.  To see her and Joe on the same night...  I can't even describe how wonderful that would be.  In fact, if you added Buddy Guy to the show, I'd have to figure out how to get my butt to Tucson that night.

Thanks Deezer and Jim for the info.  Can't wait for the movie.

Hey that really is a neat site that does exactly what it says on the package - an ideal starting point especially for those whose knowledge might not be on the level of most on this forum!

I'm sure you won't mind if I post it elsewhere? wink

Nope, not at all!

The site was for my Master's degree and is intended for educational purposes with a twist of entertainment. Learning about blues should be fun. Plus it connects some dots between the pioneers and the future of the blues. Almost like the first people that pieced together the old testament and the new testament! lol smile

And you know it's going to be a growing list of profiles, and only the meat and potatoes of each artist will be noted. I need to keep the user interested. Another thing I wanted to do was break stereotypes. Many YOUNG blues players, even Robert Johnson was 27 when he died. Another thing I tried to promote was the virtual world Second Life, you can blues artists perform there too! I even featured some blues artists that play in SL.

thanks for the vote of confidence! If you're on Facebook, make sure you join my DiscoverBlues Group.

I will be watching it tonight. Will let you know what I think.
I read Beyonce doesn't swear in real life, so swearing in the movie was awkward. potty mouth!

Re: Cadillac Records, a major motion picture about blues

GREAT FILM!  LOVED IT!

I had no idea Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf didn't get along. Muddy also came off as being sort of egotistical. I've talked to players who knew Muddy, and they said that he wasn't a bad guy... even encouraging. Bryan Lee knew he could make it in the blues when Muddy Water told him to stick with it.

"In Milwaukee, 1981 I opened up for Muddy Waters at Summerfest, and at the end of his show I went to his dressing room and I said “Muddy, you and your band sound so good and it’s just so nice to see and old man like you with a beautiful lady” And he said” Bryan my friend, I don’t see any old people here, what are you talking about?” And I said “Well, it is so nice to be in the presence of a living legend”. And he got up and came over and hugged me, and said” Bryan, stay with this. One day you’re going to be a living legend. “So, that was the clincher. After that is was” OK give me the brick wall, I’ll go through it.” - Bryan Lee

I knew Wolf seemed intimidating though. The guy that played Chuck Berry was hilarious.

I will buy the DVD when it comes out.
