Re: Favorite acoustic players???

I've seen this guy live many times here in the UK, but I'm not sure anyone on here will know who he is.

So ladies and gentleman I give you Gordon Giltrap.

All the players mentioned are fantastic. I only recently saw Tommy Emmanuel and was totally gobsmacked!
One player who should definitely be included is John Martyn,
If you haven't heard him check out this song from the album Solid Air. You will recognise the song smile

Re: Favorite acoustic players???

Besides the Latin-influenced players I also like a good Bluegrass picker. Jerry Douglas is a standout for me.

Great post, Bill...first time I heard "Faux Mantini" I immediately thought of Al D. and this song, which I first stumbled across in the late 70's on Al's album "Elegant Gypsy" and later heard performed by the trio listed above on "Friday Night In San Francisco", a must-have for fans of this style of music.

I don't have it handy, but I if you look at the cd, Joe gives props to Al Dimeola in re: to Faux Mantini.

Re: Favorite acoustic players???

I see lots of votes for Paco De Lucia and I sort of forgot him - although I have some of his recordings.

A virtuoso of modern flamenco - yes indeed, but...

Too many notes for me, exhausting to listen to.

Because you can - doesn't mean you should and that is a lesson that many a guitarist and bassist should learn.

Leo Kottke the player of the 70's http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=gQ-r8b2-t … re=related saw him open for somebody can't remember who.

Re: Favorite acoustic players???

I know somebody mentioned Michael Hedges. He was from Enid Oklahoma. CSN used to have him open many shows for them. Barefoot on stage with dreds and tie dyed hippie clothes quite the free spirit. never seen him with short hair. Good recording http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=D8GZGhK-8 … re=related

Re: Favorite acoustic players???

Warren Haynes.  His track with Dicky Betts on A Night With the Allman Brothers is amazing.  In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.

Speaking of IMOER the story is pretty cool how they came up with the name.  Duane leaked the story to the Rolling Stone mag.  Betts and a married lady were having an affair and would go to the cemetary near where the Brothers lived.  Duane said "that where he _____ her right on her grave man"  When Betts wrote the song for the girl he couldn't use her name so he used the name on that poor head stone.  That is how Elizabeth Reed became the most famous dead person in Macon GA.
