Topic: Vote for your three best blues albums of 2008

This is from the UK magazine, Blues Matters and appears to be open to all:

Blues Matters! wants to know which 3 albums you rate from the year-past, and your 2 favourite re-releases (inc. best ofs/compilations/reissues etc).
We will use our first issue of 2009 (issue 47) to countdown the 50 Best Blues albums, reviewed by us during 2008 (issue 42-46), and the 10 most popular reissues. Please note, the chosen releases MUST have been covered by us between issues 42 and 46 – so check those back issues!!

Please let us know why you've made the choices you have, and submit in descending order.

Only one submission per person, and please remember to include your full-name and address. 3 lucky submitters will win copies of the new albums from Roadhouse and The Mustangs.

Email to darren@bluesmatters.com or send to the usual PO Box address by 5th January 2008.

So assuming you vote for LFNIP, then you have two other choices to make.

Mine will probably be Walter Trout - The Outsider and Oli Brown - Open Road

Greenknows Blues!
I tend to agree with all 3 of your choices Greenose. Walter Trout's release is absolutely excellent. Do you think Walter's The Next Big Thing is indirectly / directly about Joe Bonamassa or some younger gun or just a random fictitious person? I haven't heard all of Oli Brown's CD yet, but it is surely hooking me.  Since I have no idea, were they all covered in the issues mentioned and therefore eligible, or not? What would you rate for reissues?

Re: Vote for your three best blues albums of 2008

Hi Rocket,

I read an interview with Walter Trout in Classic Rock and he did name two examples of who Next Big Thing was about, one was Kula Shaker who were big in Europe about 10 years ago and then vanished and the other was Johnny Lang.

Yes those three were all covered. Actually Bluesmatters covers about 50 albums in each issue so pretty much anything you can think of should have been reviewed, from Duffy to Whitesnake!

Reissues can also be best ofs.  I think I'll do the Stevie Ray Vaughan & Friends Solo Sessions and Encores

and the re-release of The Hoax's Humdinger.

Thanks, I'd not decided reissues til now! Oli's CD is certainly worth getting smile

Re: Vote for your three best blues albums of 2008

I haven't listened to very many releases from this year, but my next favorite after LFNIP is Sonny Landreth's, "From The Reach". It's hard for it not to be great with all the talent that Sonny enlisted to help.

My third choice is tough because I too have Walter's, "The Outsider", and I think it is one of the best records Walter has put out. However, I'm going to go with a sentimental choice and say Sean Costello's, "We Can Get Together". It's a gritty and soulful and honest record from a guy who's talent was immense and will be sorely missed. RIP Sean.

Lee, I fully agree with you, I love We Can Get Together, and feel sorry that Sean is no longer with us. It will also get my third vote, or maybe my second one.

Re: Vote for your three best blues albums of 2008

I'd thought you may be interested in the results of Blues Matter's public vote on the best blues album of 2008.

The winner, apparently by some margin was Sean Costello's We Can Get Together.

Second place went to Oli Brown's Open Road. Oli was vitually unknown this time last year, so to get second place for him as a 19 year old is a great achievement!

Walter Trout's The Outsider was 4th whilst Joe's LFNIP came 8th 9don't blame BM, it was a public vote!

The full listing is in the lastest copy of Blues Matters.

Here though is a scan of the mention's of Sean and Oli's albums from the printed version. The eagle eyed amongst you will notice who notice which voter's quote was used in respect of Oli Brown...

Well done Oli, RIP Sean

Thanks Duncan, I see you're still riding that high! I can now say I know a published author smile
A great achievement for Oli and a fitting tribute to Sean Costello getting number one. A very talented young guy who left the stage far too early.

Tripsy smile
