Topic: Carlisle Blues festival review - Lister, Schofield and Siegal

Morning

I was at the Carlisle Blues Festival at the weekend, and saw a selection of acts including Sherman Robertson, Nine Below Zero, Jon Amor and the Ian Siegal band.

I have written a review of the last day of the festival which featured Ian Siegal solo, The Aynsley Lister Band and The Matt Schofield Trio.

I only recently stumbled across Schofield. I had heard the name spoken a few years ago but confused him with a Jazz guy or at least thought he was a Jazz player. He looks for real. Watched the video with Aynsley, good stuff. Thanks for posting I'll be checking out Schofield some more. Already a fan of Aynsley.

Thanks Jim

Yes the Matt Schofield Trio does sound like the name of a jazz group, and there is an element of jazz to his playing but Matt was fully brought up on the American blues players like Albert Collins, BB King, Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Schofield and Siegal are signed to Nugene records and for anyone interested there are free downloads available at:

After Aynsley finished his set he was approached from one of the audience who was very pleased to meet him. The guy was from St Louis and had been due to see Lister as one of his aborted gigs from 2007. I used the opportunity to say to Aynsley that he really needs to get over to the USA soon.

Joe did not appear at this festival, but interestingly the first song I heard on entering the building was Joe's live version of Cradle Rock. Set a good tone for the rest of the weekend smile

Thanks Duncan,
A great array of talented musicians. I've seen Matt Schofield a couple of times and really enjoy his style.
What was Jon Amor's set like? Isn't he supporting Joe on some of his dates?

Probably (understandably) confused him with the jazz guitarist John Scofield, who's a pretty amazing player and has done some diverse stuff including some work with Gov't Mule (Warren Haynes & co.)

A friend with similar taste played some of Matt's stuff for me a few years ago and it didn't really grab me at the time, I was into my full-on Joe "crush", but maybe I'll give it another listen....as my tastes change from time to time.

Yes that is the guy I was thinking of. Didn't explore him because I'm not that big of a Jazz fan. I have been listening more to it latley. There is a pretty good Jazz scene here. I do like a good Jazz band live. Charlie Christian was from here so we have deep Jazz roots. We are best known of course for Toby Keith and the Flaming Lips.

Hi, missed this question yesterday. Jon Amor played a pretty full on guitar dominated set. He played with a second guitarist and they played group of his solo songs including Hardhat and also the Hoax's Feeding Time.  I managed to get a few words conversation with him after his set, but strangely he and the band were heading back down to Devizes that day!  He suppoerted Joe on some Canadian dates last month.

I think perhaps Matt Scofield has to be seen live to be fully appreciated, that may be hard for you in North America, although I have seen on his tour dates he is playing in Mexico early next year at the   Puerto Rock n' Blues Festival!  Interestingly Matt Like Joe has covered Travelling South and Pack It Up. Give them a listen its interesting to compare styles.
