Re: Bristol Colston Hall Show

Marty, thanks for that. I'd be interested to know whether you were shooting in RAW and whether there was any post production (Photoshop etc) exercised on the images as I just loved some of the hues! The ones I posted from Birmingham I thought were good until I saw yours!

Re: Bristol Colston Hall Show

To be honest, the colour images haven’t had much done to them.  Maybe a slight tweak to contrast and saturation and some noise reduction (to remove the noise that high ISO creates in colour images).  All this is done in seconds in Lightroom.

The blue toned and sepia toned images are simple actions in Lightroom.  My favourite though, is the ‘cold tone’ effect, where warm colours (reds and oranges etc) are desaturated and the cold colours (blues and greens) are slightly boosted.  For some reason this effect seems to work really well with some concert photos (although certainly not all of them).

I must admit I don’t have any great plan for post processing – Lightroom allows you to view what different effects (actions) will look like before you actually apply them, so I just play and choose an action that compliments the image I’m working with.  Once loaded I would expect to spend no more than 10-15 seconds on each image for post processing.

Also, I don’t use RAW, especially when I only have a few minutes to cram all my shots in.  They fill up the camera buffer too quickly, and it’s a pain to work with afterwards.  I know it can lead to more detail captured in the shots, and if I was looking to get maybe 10 shots from a concert that I’d spend ages processing afterwards then I’d consider it.  However, my particular style is about trying to capture the atmosphere of a concert over a lot of photos, not looking for technical perfection in a single shot.  It doesn’t worry me if it’s slightly underexposed or overexposed or the white balance is off (all things that could be fixed with RAW) as long as it evokes the right impression of what it was like to be at the live show.

Yike I’m starting to ramble now.  I must learn to say what I mean in fewer words.

Re: Bristol Colston Hall Show

Thanks Marty, that's really interesting, maybe we should start a photoblog on here. LOL. I agree with not using RAW for the same reasons. I've never really looked at post production as I've always tried to look for the shots that portray the atmoshere as you quite rightly point out. I'll check out Lightroom after I've had a play around with the program I got with my 400D. Thanks for sharing with us, your shots are really excellent!

Well, Mitch said I'd post some pictures from last night's show, so I suppose here's as good a place as any to put them....

Security were a bit tough last night.

Great quality pictures - shame the lighting backdrop and stage layout was so uninspiring!

Well, it was a great deal better than the last time I saw him, at the Cheese & Grain in Frome, but yes Joe's stage show would certainly benefit from some more imaginative lighting.

Re: Bristol Colston Hall Show

Hi everyone! I'm new to this forum, but just wanted to take some time out to say how much I enjoyed Joe's show at Colston Hall, Bristol. It was the first time I have seen him live, and it was a stunning performance!  Backed up by a great band, nearly 2 hrs of quality music. Would love to go to the Albert Hall if I'm lucky enough to get tickets, 'cos that will be a sell out on that form!
Don't forget Imelda May either, great artist, enjoyed her set too!

Re: Bristol Colston Hall Show

The Colston Hall gig was my first Joe Bonamassa live experience, and I wasn't let down! I'm so glad Joe feels better and was able to do this gig. The tickets were a birthday present to myself, and I had a great time. Wow! What a gig! I've never seen such a passionate guitarist. A tight group of musicians, all of them artisans.

Marty, to echo the other comments here: Excellent photos! I tried commenting on your site but it didn't appear. sad I took a few photos from further back, but then I'm not photographer! I'll upload the photos to Flickr soon and link them from here.

Hi Dotjay.  Sorry about the losing your comment.  I get about 100 spam comments on my blog every day and I have to delete them and then approve the real comments before they appear.  Unfortunately, I got carried away pressing delete, delete, delete and saw your comment too late - my finger had already pressed the button.  I couldn't even tell who'd left it to get back to them.  So, apologies, I'll be more careful next time.

No problem, Marty! I can sympathise. I run a blog too and I'm a moderator on a forum, which gets silly amount of spam daily.

All the best,
Jon

Re: Bristol Colston Hall Show

I finally got my shots of this gig up. They ain't great, but there are a couple of 'interesting' ones in there. I thought I'd share anyway.
