Topic: EV's or Celestions

I figured this would be the place to come.

I have a Fuchs 2 x 12 cabinet (open backed but closed with studio isolation foam) that has 2 12' Eminence Patriots.  I like them but I'm curious as to the difference between the EVM12L and the various Celestion speakers that are out there like the Greenbacks.
What are the tonal differences between them besides the obvious power handling ratings.

Like pedals, speakers can drastically change the way an amp sounds and performs.  Sinking several hundred dollars into something that you may not like isn't all that appealing to me.  Just curious though.

Some guys run two different speakers but then how would you mic up the cab without phase issues?  Would you have phase issues?  I know that some players mic the front and the back of an open backed cab which would give phasing problems but mic'ing two front speakers...besides taking up two channels in the console and blending the two...sounds way too complicated.   See how my mind works?  You thought I was crazy talking about cables smile

Thanks

Re: EV's or Celestions

Hi Bro, let me emphasize that Celestions while they might or may sound great in a 4-12 do not hold up tht well in a 2-12 or 1-12 cab. They are made in China now and are very inconsistant, I know I have used hundreds over the years. If you can find a music store with some NOS on the shelves, I'd say get em, but like I said depends on how many watts your gonna push through them. I definetely recommend the EV12L's over the Celestions for the power handling ability and bottom end. Also you might want to check out the Tone Tubby speakers, they sound amazing and don't crackle like cheapo these days Celestions. I am pissed that Celestion dropped the ball on their consistancy. But anyway, check out the Tubbys if you don't have the bucks for the EV's, you can get their 40/40 for about $120.00

Re: EV's or Celestions

I had a cab with v 30's.  The first cab I ever owned.  I bought my Fuchs and played it out of it and it sounded bad.  I asked Joe here about speaker recommendations and he told me EV's all the way.  Since then I ditched that cab and bought matching custom cabs and have all EV's.  I like it cuz its super clear and what goes in comes out.

Yea, I have a Fuchs 50 ODS with their 2 x 12 cab that came loaded with the Eminence.  I had a old Boogie MkIIB that I had put a EV12L in years ago and liked it alot.

How do you think 2 EV12L's would sound compared to the Eminences?

you can check me out on the Fuchs webpage
www.fuchsaudiotechnology.com   under endorsers or at www.pghlivemusic.ning,com/profile/dannyg   couple of sound clips here

my bands site is www.joegrushecky.ca

Thanks guys

Re: EV's or Celestions

They will soundbetter.  If I'm not mistaken I think Eminence tried to put out a copy of them when EV closed shop for a few years.

Re: EV's or Celestions

since the EV12L's are bigger power handling, do they require a bigger head to push the overdriven sound? if so, does EV make speakers for lower watt heads like an 18?  the places i play in are small - medium sized bars,  its been difficult to get that nice warm overdiven tone without being told to turn down....even with a plexi shield.

Re: EV's or Celestions

At both loud and high volumes they work very well.  Obviously at higher volumes it sounds better, but that has to do with the amp being pushed and the amount of air your moving.  I highly recommend this speaker.  Although expenisve (I have to calculate them into what I want to pay for and amp cuz I have to buy a set uf speakers as well) I think you will like them if you into clean speaker sound, unlike lets say a greenback which has a lot of speaker breakup.  Very tight with nice low end and are pretty articulate.  Like I said what goes in comes out.

Re: EV's or Celestions

May I throw a wildcard in the mix? I play one of Ed Quidley's Model 1 combos (a masterpiece of an amplifier might I add) and it's loaded with a Mojotone Greyhound. I had never heard of Mojo speakers before but this is a very serious contender. Over the years I've played Celestions, EVs, Jensens and a few others and this Greyhound is as nice as any I've ever played. It's chime-y like the old Jensens but I think the Greyhound is a bit rounder and fuller than that. The mfg's page says they were trying to make a cross between an American and a British speaker and I think they've done a very good job of it.

Re: EV's or Celestions

The best speaker is the EV 12L, It costs more but it will out last anything out there.
