Topic: Why dessert the strats?

I was just wondering why Joe decided to not use strats at all anymore. I think I remember reading something about Fender doing something to alienate Joe, but is that the main reason? or do the gibsons just have "the sound" for his ears?

i personally loved Joe's tone with the strats. ALLLLLLLLLLL the way back to the Bloodline days.

Re: Why dessert the strats?

Here is a forum topic that covers it all on that subject. Lots of info here: http://www.jbonamassa.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=5927 . Hope this helps.

dang! 15 pages to scroll through!

pretty lame of fender about the gold guitar. wont stop me from being a strat player, but pretty low of them. My hands are too small for les pauls. probably why I never got into the feel of them.

then not even with a big coal tongs. lol
Its a shame what fender did indeed...

hehehe.

have you found a way to simulate a single coil type sound with a les paul? or are you completely over that type of sound?

Re: Why dessert the strats?

My guess is that if he really wants that single coil sound, he'll pull out his Gigliotti Strat.

Re: Why dessert the strats?

Some people dont like strats because they all sound the same.  Now granted Les Pauls all sound pretty much the same too.

But Strats have a very bluesy common sound that is reconizable almost instantly.  I love Stevie Ray, and Hendrix, but I dont want to sound like them. I am drawn to a thicker more Les Paul tone and I'd bet Joe B is too.

Its nothing personal to your tastes. I just dont like them. I prefer Telecasters and Jazzmasters. Hell I'd say the Strat one of my least favorite Fenders. Its nothing against you though.

Oh yeah, That thing about hands being to small for a Les Paul....

Les Pauls come with the 60's style neck.  Its very thin.  I play a 58 reissue which is a base ball bat  and I have very small hands. The smaller scale helps and makes it very easy to play.  The 25 inch scale on  strat makes it very hard to play on the lower frets on a strat for short fingered people.

Its much easier to play a Les Paul.  But thats just my humble opinion.

Re: Why dessert the strats?

For whatever it's worth, the only down side to my historic 57 was the baseball bat neck.
I've been working on guitars for quite a few years and took the neck down to where it suited me, a little smaller than a 59 neck. It's very easy to play and hasn't hurt the tone at all. It weighs 8.4 lbs and rings like a bell acoustically.
It can be done but have a competant luthier do it unless you you're experienced at it.
It's not something to try as an experiment and if not done correctly it can be ruined.
The first one I did on a strat about 12 years ago became firewood because I got a little too ambitious and hit the truss rod, and the neck was garbage after that. I've done a lot of necks since then and have methods now to acurately indicate the proper truss rod placement, but it still has to be done slowly and carefully and the neck has to be restained and nitro'd.
If you have that special guitar and the only thing holding you back is the neck then it's something to think about. That was the only thing that was missing to make it the guitar I can't put down.

I've always been a strat player and still play my favorite strat but it just doesn't have the versatility or sustain of my LP and only gets used about 5-10% of the time now.

Re: Why dessert the strats?

If knew the real person my ex girlfriend turned out to be.. you would hold a grudge too..  LOL!!!  Got a great album from it though. Thats really is the lesson for people who date songwritters..  be careful cause the songs we write about you will last forever!!!  Honestly she will go down in history as the worst girlfirend ever!!  Bad for real life, great for the blues.. She hates when I talk about her in Public!!  You can see how that effects me doing it!!!! HAA  Wait til she hears the "Ballad of John Henry"  LOL!   OH.. back to the topic..  LES PAULS Rule..!! Strats are great and will always be no matter what I say..  They just carry a stigma with them...  SRV is a icon but theres always that comparison whether u sound like him or not.. Plus Strats are easier to play than Les Pauls, for young guys thats taking the easy way out.. Think Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, , Jeff Beck...

All part of life Joe keep you head high smile we have all been there sometime or another...

on strats though I wouldnt say its the easy way out they are alot cheaper which accounts for why alot of youngens have them...

Atm I'm prefering to play a 335 my strats have been stuck on a wall for weeks :x but thats mainly cuz I can sit with no amp and doodle at a reasonable volume smile with it
